Use simple, clear sentences to make your
point. Good writers use clear, concise
language. They don't bog down sentences with
extra words and long, winding sections. They
cut to the chase and make their point in the
simplest language ... 1 Like |

I don't know if this is laziness or fatigue. I pick up a book to read and all of a sudden, I feel tired, sleepy and most of the time, tears roll down my eyes. I feel the inside of my head as if flashed with light and then very week. When this happens, I can go for months without reading. I have never sad a place to read for fifty minutes or more right from nursery School up to my polytechnic days. It's disturbing and I cannot just figure a way to end this. |

LadyGoddiva: I missed the thread Ma'am. In fact, most of the threads I created about writing never got to a wider audience. Most of my blog posts about writing are now promoted through other means. I guess I gave up. There are other foreign groups I promote them. All the same, I will give it a shot once again. lalasticlala take note |

The basics.... 1) Choose an area to focus your writing on ( Me personally is tech becuase that's where my skills and expertise lay squarely ) 2) Develop your know how and expertise on that 3) Follow , watch, read, listen, eat and chew what the experts in that area are doing. 4) Choose topics to write on, research to know what has been done there and then do better. 5).....Finally..write, write on paper, with your PC, laptop, phone etc....whenever ideas hits you just write and write. Build your personal brand which includes your Social media channels and a web present for your writing brand |

IamOlusa: The only way to do that is by reading and writing, and you're supposed to have developed that interest through your years in school. Anything else is like a left-handed-person trying to learn to use his right hand at old age. However, if you insist, I can help you with an e-book and audio book. But, its best for people who already write. If you need it, email kemeticphilosophy@gmail |

IamOlusa: Trust me if you are passionate about sth., you'll be able to capture peoples' interests. They don't have to agree with you but they will listen. If you have fascinating topics, it's your job to make others see that. This can only be the case if YOU think its fascinating. You can't convince people if you are not convinced |

Start by changing you topic to "prolific writer" Instead of "proficient writer". And change all those your preponderance of "proficient" to "prolific". IamOlusa: |

Well, being a proficient writer is not a day's job. However, I commend your determination. There is no hard and fast rule to being a better word cobbler but there are basic things you must take cognizance of: 1. Read! Read!! Read!!! It'd sound cliched but that's the most basic way to become a better wordsmith. As a writer, you'd deal with words and it'd be laughable if you don't read to: (a) expand your vocab (b) know the styles of writing (c) expand your mind etc. Subscribe to writing blogs, read about grammar, writing and all things, as much as you can. 2. Practice The Craft Depending on your genre, writing often is a way to build your muscles. Like the saying, 'practice makes perfect', writing often, makes you a better pen master. You'd start with 200-300 words daily and as time goes, increase it. Also, note that it's not just about writing but when you write,be intentional; identify your errors and correct them in subsequent ones. If you don't have a platform, social media - Facebook, Nairaland, Medium, etc - are readily available for free. Publish your thoughts on these platforms daily and watch your craft grow. 3. Join Writers' Groups Here, you'll see people who are like-minded. They'd give you advise, encourage you, even share opportunities when they come. They are many of them on social media and even offline. Search for them and join, but ensure you're not an onlooker - participate. In sum, while others are born with innate writing skills, there are those who mastered the craft by committing to continuous learning. You might be discouraged at the onset but just keep on writing. Don't forget to also fine ways of monetizing it - it's essential. I wish you the best in your new-found love. May your ink flow ceaselessly! |

Op if you want to learn to write better, go under the sun and allow it to blast out the dumbness from your inside, then hope that somehow the gene of smartness will be recombined with your system. Joke apart, follow pastorlam advice |

This topic got my attention too because I'm very interested in writing and I read some books on the genre I would like to write about but unfortunately, I had no basic training in literature and never did it in school. So, my good people how do I start and achieve this my life long desire? |
Re: How Can I Be A Proficient Writer? by madjune(m): 3:50am On Dec 04, 2017 |
The best writing inspiration does not come through learning. It's through living. Life and it's vicissitudes will give you a personalised key and you would write from the standpoint of your unique experience and that which is far from boring fiction but the truth. Moreso, when the idea hits you; never doubt but close your eyes. Th perfect literary vomit moulds perfectly in the dream state. Good luck. 1 Like |
