The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN, has said that not less than 75 manufacturing firms from about 150 in its membership list in the South East had shutdown in the last five years over bad access roads, poor infrastructure and others.

Chief Azubuike Okafor, chairman of MAN in-charge of Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu, said this at the first Anambra Government-Development Partners summit in Awka on Tuesday.

Okafor attributed the shutdowns to poor infrastructure, including bad access roads, was negatively affecting cost of production by its members in the zone. He said such development made it unsuitable for the firms to operate in the region.

“About fiver years ago, we had about 150 manufacturing firms in our membership list in the zone and now about 75 of them have closed dow; that represents about 50 per cent of members.

“We do not have the enabling infrastructure, power and roads to operate; the cost of moving materials from Lagos to Anambra is almost the same as the cost of importing the material from China into Nigeria.

“Though we have a business friendly governor in Anambra, there is need to help the private sector to grow,” he said.

Mrs. Adejoke Adefulire, Senior Special Adviser to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), said there were infrastructure gaps in the country.

Adeufulire said the Federal Government was working hard to ensure that gaps were bridged to evolve a friendly and sustainable business environment.

Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, Secretary to Anambra Government, urged the Federal Government to revitalise and activate the moribund power project in the state.

Chukwulobelu said if made functional, the power infrastructure need of the industrial cities in Anambra would have been greatly addressed.

On his part, Mr. Mark Okoye, Anambra Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, said the state government was working towards incorporating the ministries and agencies in the state to ensure that the SDGs were achieved.

He said the state was conducting a baseline study and generating community charter to ensure that budget was tailored along the priorities and direct demands of the beneficiaries.

Okoye said the budget defence process would be expanded to accommodate the youth, women, organised private sector and the civil society, to ensure greater participation and better implementation.

As much as we know that its quite impossible to satisfy every Nigerian,
but creating an enabling environment for business to strive is the responsibility of the government.

this is something the government should have included in its first 100 day's vision for the country.

Truth be told,
without infrastructure businesses are prone to fail.

An enabling environment for business shouldn't be too much to ask for,
I've seen quite an impressive federal road rehabilitation projects in the North and that's a kudos from me to you.

But please include the 5% with your 97% according to you Mr President,
in your interview when you told the whole world that the constitution doesn't allow you to favour a part of the country over the other.

#God bless Nigeria with visionary leaders

long live Mr President

Who do u blame? Govt? Instead of south south and south east regions to cry and negotiate for projects in both regions from the govt in power, they are busy crying for people in the regions to be given public positions. Since these people have been getting these positions, how have they contributed to the development of both regions? Only their families, friends and cronies benefit from these positions but public projects belong to all. We must learn to stop fighting the fights that politicians are supposed to fight for themselves!

Those people are not even as smart as they are portraying themselves to us.
Imagine what they've missed because they are not visionary. They always wait for fg to come put everything in place for them.

What stopped them from taking loans to fix their roads? If they had done this perhaps the companies/firms wouldn't have relocated to another region.
Lack of vision is their major problem but they don't know hence they blame everybody except themselves.
In this particular thread they are already blaming fg, fashola, and i'm verry sure one will soon blame tinubu or SWcheesy shiiiiiiior.

It's really not surprising. Even states like Kaduna, Edo, Kebbi and Akwa Ibom are getting more local and foreign investments than potor states

Between August and November

-BUA commissioned a big ass cement plant in Edo state
-Osinbajo commissioned a fertilizer factory in Edo state on the same day
-A multi-billion Naira Wacot Rice Mill was commissioned in Argungu, Kebbi State
-OLAM $150 million integrated feed mill, breeding farm, and hatchery was commissioned in Kaduna,
-A N500m food processing factory was commissioned in Jigawa

Dangote is already planning to build a ($450m) sugar factory in Niger state

Mind you, these are all landlocked states that don't even have as much human resources as SE states

They're waiting for FG to build seaport in landlocked Onitsha. Lying that ports in nearby SS aren't working even though evidence points to the contrary

That's what you get for being senseless

I think something must be wrong somewhere. According to that news report, half of the industries in the region have already closed shop in the last 5-years. That is an awful statistic to say the least. At the current rate the entire industrial base may be wiped out within another decade. I don't want to believe that infrastructure is the major cause.

But in any case, this is a big indictment against the government and citizens of the region who apparently can't get their acts together to build a viable industrial economy. I mean, on the surface they supposedly have a lot going for them in the human resources department, they also have a chunk of wealthy folks, not to mention that this region is the smallest in the country. So in my opinion they have no excuse for being in this position, unless we wanna blame it all on incompetence on the the part of their administrators.

Breh, I don't think the problem is infrastructure. It's deeper than that. Unless we want to say states like Niger and Kebbi have better infrastructure and enabling environment for businesses to thrive than the SE.

You just said the koko. They would like to have the rest of the world believe that their region is the bastion of development and prosperity, yet they paradoxically scream marginalization against the fg for failing to develope them, and can't come together to build basic infrastructure.

Ogun state had to borrow heavily to fix the federal roads that criss-cross its domain (considering that it is an inevitable/unavoidable gateway into Lagos from any part of the country) coz the state government knows that its industrialization drive can't be toyed with, owing to its strategy of maximizing its proximity to Lagos.

Till today the fg has not yet paid back the over N200-billion naira it admits to owing the state as refund for fixing those federal roads, but you don't hear the state government whining about marginalization like they prefer to do. Rather the state is moving forward and even opening up new highways to accommodate it's projected growth.

They should continue waiting for fg to fix their region while others are moving on to bigger things.

Most of them don't even care about the happenings in their region because they know they can get whatever they want in other region, especially SW. This is why they are not asking their bad leaders questions.

Another problem is that they can't think beyond the market. They have a mono economy, hence the obsession with markets. Market market market. Onitsha apparently has some of the biggest markets in Africa, same with Aba. Yet shame no gree let O'bingo release IGR figures. Aba is in shambles. I saw O'bingo's 166 billion budget yesterday and I was just laughing

That market mentality is where the Lagos delusion comes from

When will these clowns realize you can't develop an economy by just internal commerce alone. It's 2017 not 1965. Yeah people go make small bar individually, but things no go work collectively.. Which developed country today has its economy centered around buying and selling. It's not like you even produce your own sh+it and export. You import almost everything and then sell to a large population. That's one of the reasons why a huge chunk of the population are leaving the region, because there aren't enough people to sell to since everyone is doing the same thing.

You touched on an interesting concept. If you look at the motivations for almost all the eastern deep seaports you notice that import obsession. Yes the import market will grow but its the export jobs that should be focused on more. This why some are saying all these ports are going to cut eachothers profits.

True. The import obsession may indeed partly explain why their industries are folding up. Apparently even their elite are culpable in no small measure for this state of affairs because it seems they would rather import than create or support local industries. Case in point, just the other day, a former governor of Abia state who is supposedly the wealthiest igbo man alive, Orji Uzor Kalu, was accused of using state funds running into billions of naira to import Okrika (used clothes).

http://www.tribuneonlineng.com/orji-kalu-allegedly-use-abia-funds-engage-okrika-business/

Importation of itself isn't necessarily wrong especially if the intention is to add value to the imports. E.g, many non-oil producing countries strategically built refineries that depend on imported crude oil from the likes of (foolish) Nigeria, they add value to the crude via refining, and then resell to us for a profit. I once illustrated how European countries also earn far more (billions of dollars) than Africans from export of chocolate after adding value to the raw materials they sourced from African Cocoa-producing countries.

Even Dangote intends to import $9-billion worth of phosphates and potash from Morocco and Congo respectively, for his fertilizer plant for value addition and export purposes.

When won't local industries die when even the supposed leaders are obsessed with importation?
