To make the analogy,i'll connect the mind and the body by example.
The body has it's cravings. Sometimes we give in to the cravings sometimes we dont. To function properly in society and achieve even a modicum of success, we all know that we've got to put down our bodies, seriously.
In the area of food, our body left to itself would binge on biscuits, fast food and all those good looking meals.
That's y fast food industry is thriving. They feed us junks (mostly) and we sate our raging appetite.
It's all about the impact of the food on our tastebuds rather than the esoteric, acclaimed health benefits.
People know how chicken tastes, how icecream tastes, how snacks tastes,
they just dont know how "it's not good for your health" tastes or that
(bland) not-great-tasting vegetables
"is good for you".
So our bodies have their own cravings.
It craves the wrong things.

Our minds have their own cravings too.
Distraction is one of them.
Distraction is to the mind what sweet-tasting but low health value foods are to the body.
And in this world of tech, distractions are just aplenty.
some decades ago, distractions were video games, films that kept teenagers from doing well in school.
Now,it has escalated. It's social media - facebook, nairaland, twitter etc. and idle internet browsing.
The issue is that mental sugars dont show the same outward effects as junk foods do.
We dont look obese or unhealthy which makes it all the more deadly.
When we're getting out of shape,we already have a signal that our consumption is getting awry and that we need to make some changes.
How do u measure a mind out of shape?
With body issues we've got doctors and ngo's and governments nagging, warning, educating us to make a change. Then word of mouth spreads the gospel,"too much sugar is not good".
"it's not good to eat all this sweet sweet foods".
Subconsciously we make a mental note to make a change. Then some start changing - Faith come by hearing and hearing.
With mental sugars it aint so!
Worst a boss bickers on you and raps you for laziness.
But the addictions continue to build up until, one is literally a crack-addict at one or more mind-narcotics.
But with distractions go productivity.
Our minds become weak and flaccid from underuse.
Any deep logic, astounds us and throws us into a loop, when confused we go to the sweetshop - google/fb/etc to find answers,
we stop using our minds constructively.
I wonder what will happen with time- we'll outsource all thinking to the cloud-or social platforms!
You have a relationship problem? - put in on the cloud for the world to give u answers!
You have a knotty homework-go online (google is yourfriend)
You want to be entertained-oops! easy - choose ur pick
Wanna chat?-anonymously? go out and meet people(that's so 80's).

Mental sugars are so addictive we arent aware of them.
What of people who are in remote areas with no access to tech- they do have some sugars like gossip/chatting?
Some of it is good. But the bottom line is that the mind ,the unsaved mind of man, has it's unhealthy cravings.
And people usually pander up to it.
It's for this reason that mathematics is one of the most abhorred subjects - because it demands high mental discipline.
Infact any field that requires a moderate to high amount of mental discipline and rigour is abhorred.

That's too high a price to pay for most people, they'd rather be couch potatoes, feeding on their sugars.

But mental sloppiness is easy to spot- it manifests firstly in sloppy thinking , shoddy expressions and poor focus ability.
I see it in myself and see it in others, but it's so disgusting when extreme versions are seen.
And just like some1 who paid the high cost to get a fit body looks beautiful, some1 who paid the high cost to get a well toned mind also looks beautiful, when they express with their minds!!
