1.Saudi had 720BN in its reserves at the start....

2.Nigeria did not save largely because we spent cash on subsidies, and corruption of course.

The recession of 1982...started when oil prices crashed in 1982....and it led to Shagari's govt trying to bring in austerity measures in 1983.

When Buhari took over on December 31, 1983...the situation was already bad...and the NPN govt had made things worse.

When IBB threw out Bubu in 1985....the situation got worse..until oil prices improved in 1990/91(Gulf oil windfall).

Bubu did not manage the crisis of the 1980's well, but he did try to improve domestic production...among other things. And he wasn't the cause...blame the NPN.

Babangida's free market policies worked almost from the start

Food production locally exploded when the Naira was allowed to depreciate and finds its true value. There was a uptick in exports of goods.

The economy started growing from the start
Awolowo praised the first budget of the Babangida in 1986 saying the country was in the right direct.

Most of Babangida's economic policies were good but excessive and abominable levels of corruptions associated with that government impeded real progress. It made corruption very respectable and even institutionalised it.

In the face of the recession Nigeria is currently coming out from, there have been several attacks on the current administration.

Here are 5 indisputable facts before the current government came into power. Recall that as at Dec 2014, oil price was still above $64/barrel.

1. 27 state governors were owing back log of salaries as at May 2015 when this government took over hence the bail out funds approved for governors. Despite this bail out funds, many refused to meet their obligations.

Buhari in ‘bailout’ meeting with governors- June 23; 2015

Why have Governors refused to pay salaries, allowances in spite of bailout funds? - Dec 30, 2015

2. Federal Government was borrowing to pay 2015 salaries.-May 6, 2015

Nigeria borrows to pay salaries with cash crunch worsening. (Vanguard)

3. Oil marketers were owed billions, led to a fuel scarcity that paralyzed Nigeria, even banks were closing before time, telecoms operators were sending texts about expected disruptions (never in Nigeria have this happened until 2015)

Nigeria fuel shortage cripples businesses, banks and flights - 25 May 2015

4. Okonjo-Iweala who many people in the opposition believe would have done better or saved the economy warned of tougher times as oil slipped low to about $76.

Brace for tougher times ahead, Okonjo-Iweala tells Nigerians -NOV 2014

5. Falling Foreign Reserves

Nigeria’s foreign reserves drop to $29.13 billion

With the above facts, every sane discerning mind will see that Nigeria was already in a mess before the change of power.

The question everyone should be asking now is where are the infrastructural developments that can justify all the money Nigeria made in the past 16 years of PDP's rule particularly in the last 7 years of PDP's rule when Nigeria made alot of money from crude oil sales?

george bush jnr had d iraq war and global financial meltdown which nearly destroyed d us,obama cleaned up d mess and never for one day did he blame bush

It is difficult debating here these days. Reason some of us just read and move on. There are 2 categories of people here that are difficult to debate with. Those who see no wrong with their beloved in power and those who see no good with the ones they dislike in power.

You will only get sentiments instead of logic and objectivity, conjectures / fairytale instead of logic / comon sense and facts.

While we constantly disagreed with each other those days, we never got so passionate to throw away objectivity in our arguments and we would not substitute our personal opinions for facts. And facts must come from reliable and reputable source. We didn't even value wiki links as a reliable source of facts compare to the way people now take a Facebook post or a blog's bedroom conjectures and view points for fact.

And then only sound arguments with facts got liked by others. Imagine instead of someone disputing your post with sound counter argument, he only responded by calling you zombie and yet got many likes.

Do u know things got worse before the economy picked up. I simply stated the facts, that can not be ignored simply because u want to pretend it never happened, Bush blamed, Clinton blamed, Obama blamed, even the orange man in white house now is the blaming on twitter everyday, it is called politics.

I would have appreciated you if you had suggested solutions to our problems instead of defending buhari and comparing his failures to past failures.
Bros, excuses never ends, there must be something to hold on to as an excuse and it will be perfect to ears and this is what you must understand.
Tomorrow someone else we take over from buhari and would start using buhari's failure as excuse, the cycle continues because we have an army of youths who are willing to listen to excuses upon excuses. Anyway good luck to you guys, na una go still suffer am. I rest my case.

obj met 4b and left 42b in 2007. it grew to 62b dollars in 2008. part of it was used to defend the economy when yaradua was there. by the time yaradua left it was at 42b dollars in 2009 when Jonathan took over.

there was no global economic crisis between 2009 and 2014 and oil sold between 80-110 dollars per barrel. so what did Jonathan do with 14b dollars of our foreign reserve at a time other oil producing countries were growing theirs? at the same period Saudi Arabia grew their foreign reserve to almost 700b dollars!!! Jonathan didn't grow ours instead he was spending it!!!!

oooh just shut up already. do you think we would have voted buhari if good luck was good enough, boy a bad manager even if you give him one billion year will change nothing but make things even completed. A man with Over 200 cows and have no single milk or beaf factory yet lies a huge opportunity in this while we import these items yet he call himself poor. it not news you paid bastard, for your lord buhari rule Nigeria before now tell me now what did he improve,. didn't you hear he don't know how to make money, true only a man who can not covert opportunity to productivity, that man will never make money. stop this nonsense deciet of yours. for until we get those with the mastery of the 21st century economy we can never move forward. stop that nonsense of trying to draw emotions already. buhari is to uneducated to lead Nigeria. did he diversify the economy when he was busy wasting billions in searching oil in the North? we need a leader that can unite all tribes in Nigeria not nepotist. for that is the first mark to developing. unity. A country that want to develop do not need three promises it needs every good promises not three boy. It is because none of you have genuine love for Nigeria. All you guys care about is the love you have for your favorite politicians. Some people's interest is to protect GEJ and PDP image while some others are just here to protect the image of APC and PMB, no real love for the country.

This is why what you see on political section is APC, PDP, IPOB, Afonja, SW, SE, North, GEJ, PMB, Zombie, Wailer etc because that is the only thing you guys care about. I don't think there are up to 1% of nairalanders that care about this country.

Sometimes it is better to even look at boobs in sexuality section than to comment on this section.

Every sane Nigeria saw that we were already in a mess except your Buhari who promised to change everything. Except you want to blame Nigerians for trusting him. Was ur prdsident not aware of everything you highlighted before promising change?

Are Nigerians now wrong for expecting him to fulfill his promises?

Put in mind that the factors you listed were in place before he made his campaign promises. And most of his party men were in the last administration so they knew the state of the economy before lying to Nigerians. Infact if you can recall even Gej said Buhari will not be able to change anything immediately he (Gej) lost

All these nonsense propaganda will not help him. Its not too late he can still win the peoples heart if he sincerely want to.

Don't mind that guy. I'm sure he has been paid to create this thread. If I may ask where is the national carrier he promised? He told is he would convert the presidential jets to give rise to a national carrier, or did the price of crude oil also impacted on the implementation of the agenda?

You go ad hominem as expected, one thing you should know is I won't come here to spread lies and deceive people cos of stipends you lied about Iweala's statement your soulless soul knows that, the ECA funds brouhaha is well documented governors forced FG to share the money, I expect while you ask what FG did with their share also ask what governors did with their own share, they are still sharing money today why are we not asking questions?

I won't waste my time on a low life propagandist like you, if you think lying and misrepresenting facts is better way for this country I can only wish you goodluck

This is spot on.

I don't know why Buhari and his people are making it look as if they weren't aware of the rot in the government before. Happenings now show that the APC had no blueprint or clearcut plan on how to tackle Nigeria's problem. They were just talk and talk. Nothing more. They can't do anything.
