scholes0: It’s a little tongue-in-cheek. It doesn’t need quantifying. I know Yoruba food well. Like I said it’s Ondo and Ekiti state people that have good soups. Notice I’m not talking about any old food but swallow. I just don’t think they’re a strong point of people further west than Ondo. 2 Likes |

scholes0: Yoruba people have the best stews for rice hands down. Including olori ofada. I’m talking purely about soups. At least follow the thread. My point is Yorubas have some quite tasty foods on the whole but they’re not known for nutritious soups save they’re from Ondo state. Mention gizdodo, asun, olori ofada, red ayamase and ikokore all you want. That’s got nothing to do with what I’m saying about soups for swallow a few states excepted. 1 Like |

9jakool: I’ve had their vegetable soups (including Ondo black soup) plus their original take on okro soup. Okwuru’s been there in Igboland since time immemorial but outside the east the one place that springs to mind re. authentic okro soup is Ondo town. Not Delta, not any other mid-western region but Ondo town specifically. All the variations of efo riro I ascribe to Ekiti. Enlighten me if it belongs to another state. All the vegetable soups that side of the SW are some of the best in the country. Especially the ogede/plantain-based ones. I’m not slagging off Yoruba soups for the sake of it. I was talking more about the northwestern Yoruba/Ibadan/Lagos that’s used as the norm to represent mainline Yoruba. Go deeper into the Yoruba hinterland and you’ll see some of the best foods in the country. That I know. Ondo and Ekiti soups are in a different league to the rest. Yes I’ve had isapa soup. Interestingly those soaps leaves spring from the mallow family so you can combine them with any fiber-fruity hard staple. Has anyone been known to add them to okro soup yet? 3 Likes |

fero007: Mainline Yorubas. Ondo and Ekiti foods are in a different league to the rest. That’s as far as soups go. I know Yorubas even in the Lagos/Ibadan have enough food, always have done. It’s just their soups 2 Likes |

Probz: You only claim to. Like I said it’s Ondo and Ekiti state people that have good soups. Notice I’m not talking about any old food but swallow. I just don’t think they’re a strong point of people further west than Ondo. And how many types of Swallow do Igbos have as a whole for it to be their "strong point" ? 1 Like |

scholes0: I know the Yoruba scholar in you will jump up at anything that goes against your opinion. “Which tribe in Nigeria has the best soups?” Best in this context is blatantly subjective. You’re here having a go at anyone who doesn’t think Yoruba soups are the best and that’s just it innit. It’s all opinion. And opinions don’t need to be quantified or given a critical analysis just because it’s not what you want to hear. 1 Like |

Probz: I am not having a go at everybody, I am having a GO at YOU for actually bringing Yoruba INTO the discussion between SE and SS cuisine supremacy battle. You mentioned swallow specifically, and I quoted you on it, but of course you are not giving any answers. You think I don't know Igbo soups well enough to pass my own judgements like you claim to know all Yoruba soups? 5 Likes 1 Share |

Probz: Nicely put! Ondo is famous for the marugbo soup, which isn't commonly eaten elsewhere. I like okro, especially when diced. If you like okro, then you might enjoy obe onla, the sister to okro soup. I don't know if you've had it before. Some vegetables like ugwu and uziza are commonly used in cooking in the West. Ugwu with egusi is the best combo for me. Actually, I'm not arguing with you. We don't always have to argue. This thread is about food, so let's dialogue. The ewedu and gbegiri thing is really an optional thing among Yoruba people. I, like many others think it's a very putrid combo, others don't seem to mind it. While I like ewedu and gbegiri seperately, I don't like it combined. Honestly, efo riro is quite universal, the Ekitis are just known for their efo riro and pounded yam combo. Efo riro is not just one dish. The most common type is efo tete and efo shoko, but there are others like efo amunutu, efo yanrin, efo patako, efo ewuro (bitterleaf), and efo efirin. Efo efirin is very aromatic and it's juice or leaves can be used in a type of regional pepper soup in the west. I haven't seen okro and isapa combo, but interestingly enough, despite the differences, they both belong to the mallow family. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Re: Which Tribe Has Best Soup ; igbo Vs efik/ibibio Vs urhobo/ijaw by 9jakool: 2:59am On Jun 21, 2018 |
Probz: It's dried okra and it's pounded into a powder that's then cooked. Since it's dried, it can be stored for months without refrigeration. It's a draw soup like your typical okro, but it has a slightly different texture, a very dark green colour and a strong herb flavour. 2 Likes 1 Share |

scholes0: I mean Yoruba soups though Ok, dont thrill me like SE or SS soups. apart from Edika Ikong or afang(which taste far better when patiently prepared the efik way), have you tasted ekpakukwo, afia efere, patiently prepared banga soup or ogwo soup, or Bini groundnut soup, or rivers native soup or oha, ofe akwukwo n ofe nsala that people are judging by look Instead actually tasting it. Apart from soups they have good food too. Like I said maybe I've not yet seen the best of Yoruba foods, Ive only eaten ofada rice, ewedu, efo riro, gbegiri, Okro and stew. I think most of the food you are calling from ondo state are foods of the ijaw people in that state 1 Like |

scholes0:am not one to dis other people food cuz it’s their food but any attempt to dis mine is Doa. They opened a thread competing with themselves regarding soup and they brought Yoruba into and start insulting us. Ps starch and palm oil is that even healthy. 2 Likes 2 Shares |
Re: Which Tribe Has Best Soup ; igbo Vs efik/ibibio Vs urhobo/ijaw by scholes0(m): 7:25am On Jun 21, 2018 |
viscerion: Ekpankukwo is simply seafood added to a vegetable stew wrapping grated cocoyam(mostly periwinkles) it is sweet no doubt, so yeah I have eaten it, I have eaten Owo, groundnut soup and the rest. They are just OKAY not too good. but then maybe that is just me, because I have a bias for soups made from leafy vegetables. Besides I haven't mentioned any soups from Ondo state here like Marugbo, so I wonder where you are getting the assertion in your last statement from, lol SS people overestimate the presence of Ijaws in Ondo state. Do you know that ijaws only have slightly more than half of one local government in Ondo state? and that LG isn't exactly one of most populated ones. Ese Odo is mixed Ijaw apoi, Ijaw Arogbo and Yoruba. You can live in Akure, Ondo state for 10 years and not see an Ijaw person so I wonder how they would manage to influence what the people there eat with their minuscule presence. 3 Likes 3 Shares |

Ijaw is in one local government Ese Odo and their are two ijaw the apoi speak only Yoruba and most of them bear Yoruba name why the other ijaw still speak ijaw. The local government is shared with Yoruba like u say and the former local government chairman of the state is Yoruba agoola ajayi who is now the deputy governor and the current one is Olowu ebekwe 3 Likes 3 Shares |
