One guy said a builder is an advanced bricklayer. Is that true?

PROFESSIONAL WISE, A BRICK LAYER CAN NEVER BE CALLED A BUILDER/ENGINEER. Even a graduate of building department can't be addressed as a builder.

Let me take you down to who's a builder?

A builder is a person who takes charge of a construction ranging from supervision, plan interpretation, quotations etc and he/she "MUST" be a registered member of the Nigerian Institute of Building(NIOB) or Council of registered builders of Nigeria(CORBON).

Functions of a Builder
Interpreting plans or organising for plans to be drawn that meet building code regulations and client specifications.
Providing quotes or submitting tenders for building works.
Submitting plans to local authorities for approval.
Arranging inspections of building work.
Organising contractors including carpenters, electricians, plumbers and painters to carry out building tasks.
Undertaking some building work personally.
Calculating quantities and costs and sourcing of building materials and labour.
Supervising contractors or employees to ensure safety standards are maintained and works remain on schedule.
Coordinating administrative tasks such as payment.

Building is a vast profession and has a lot of responsibilies.

Great Builders, We build Right. I Rep NIOB River State chapter.
Welcome sir

Great Builders,
I love this thread and I am proud to let us know that I am a builder by profession. I graduated 11years ago, a license builder by Corbon, also a CEO.
It will interest you to know that the profession has really done me well. Being a builder and letting the society know about it has given me jobs.
For the upcoming builders ignore your fears. Try to learn everything in your capacity, never limit your knowledge. Money may not come now but when you turn to be guru money must flow.
Find an experience builder, construction engineer to work under while doing so enroll to becoming an Niob member to Corbon certified builder.
After your graduation or while serving register your own company that will boast your mentality of being a boss. Thank you all

I have a question for engineers, why can't caravan or container homes work in Nigeria as a low cost housing solution. Prefabricated two bedroom container homes that can be easily installed and dismantled
It can work and it will be cheaper than the regular conventional housing system. While in school, I wanted to do it as my final project but my department had other ideas and rejected my proposal.
I have several ideas to make your container housing stand out if you have the finance

A good one but I fail to see the usefulness of NIOB and CORBON which are only after money and not creating policies to help builders

I've always told my friends not to compare a builder to a civil Engineer. I told them a builder is like a supervisor while the later is the Engineer on site. So what do you have to say?

What makes you a professional is your certification with your professional body with your wide experience. A lot of us may have benefited from Niob, Corbon or may have not benefited as the case maybe but it gives you an age over those without it. May job adverts for builders requires your Niob or Corbon registration. As for the policies, everything is in the process and we need the number to implement those policies. So encourage you to enroll so we can have a say in the society. Thank you sir

For the number of blocks.

Land size 120*60ft*2plot
240*120ft

Convert to mm to know total area
240ft=73152mm
120ft=36576mm

Add together 109,728mm*2 sides=219,456mm

Wall height standard 3m=3000mm

Multiply with total area
219,456*3000=658,368,000mm

Size of a block 230mm*450mm=103,500mm

Divide total area with block size

658,368,000/103,500=6361.04

App you will need 6370 blocks.

6 load of 20ton sand

80 bags of cement

12,000 liters of water

4 brick layers, 6 masons

Cost
Blocks 6370*200=1,274,000
Sand. 45,000*6=270,000
Cement. 80*2500=200,000
Water. 12,000*1.5=18,000
Labour(BL) 3000*4=12,000per day
(MS)1500*6=9,000per day
By app. 16 days=336,000
Total=2,098,000

well i'm a civil/structural engineer. Anyways getting an opportunity in the industry depends on what your interest is. if you hope to be under someone's employment, then its best you get acquainted with the skills in demand for your job role. What i do is, i always keep an eye on job adverts even when i am not accepting job offers, this helps me know the skills in demand for different positions and helps fashion my career goals and my professional development. if you hope to freelance, you should be aware that networking is just as important as competence? Linkedin is a great place to network but isnt a magic wand, it also takes alot of work to make a linkedin connection a real life connection. So you would need social skills as well as technical skills to forge ahead and a bit of luck.

there are numerous softwares out there, which to learn would depend on your needs, goals and your firm too. I have used numerous Civil Engineering softwares, i started with Orion and STAAD Pro but in the last couple of years i have begun shifting to Autodesk suite; due to my need for interoperability, parameticism and extending BIM workflows via visual/computational programming.

the softwares I currently use for my work are:

REVIT 2018 (structures)
ADVANCE STEEL 2018
ROBOT STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS 2018
DYNAMO
CADS RC
TEDDS
TEKLA STRUCTURAL DESIGNER
PRIMAVERA
MSTOWER
CSI BRIDGE
and of course AUTOCAD 2018

I am not sure about your analysis bro!
I have a HND in quantity surveying already but for the love of building i have enrolled for a top up in building tech.

A plot is 120 ft x 60 ft which is 36m x 18m.( lenght x breadth)
since we are determining fence we are to work with perimeter which is (36m + 18m ) x 2 = 108m (perimeter of a plot)

for two plots we will have 72m x 18m ( the lenght and the breadth) (72m + 18m ) x 2 =180m (perimeter of two plots)

since the perimeter of our two plots is 180m, now we need to determine the height of the fence which will lead us into obtaining the area.( fence is measured in area).

180m(perimeter) x 3m (standard height of fence) = 540m2.

Area of fence is 540m2.

a square metre of fence takes 10 blocks, so for 540sqm we need 10 x 540 = 5400 blocks.( deductions have not been made in respect of gate openings)

* I stand to be corrected
