ATOKA, TN (WMC) - A former Mid-South pastor accused of raping two underage boys has been arrested, Tipton County Sheriff’s Office confirms.
Additional Links Trial of former pastor could start this summer Ronnie Gorton, the former worship leader at Awakening Church in Atoka, was arrested Tuesday afternoon. He is charged with 47 counts related to sexual abuse.
The charges include aggravated sexual battery of a victim under the age of 13, rape, sexual battery by an authority figure, enticing a child to buy alcohol, and sexual exploitation of a minor.
The 39-year-old married former pastor is being held in Tipton County on a $500,000 bond.
Investigators said several of those counts pertain to abuse of the same victim. They did not specify how many victims they believe Gorton abused.
Tipton County investigators said a 17-year-old boy accused Gorton of sexually assaulting, molesting, and raping him on multiple occasions in Gorton’s home, with the most recent crime happening earlier this year.
Atoka Police Department said it received a similar report about Gorton from a different man who said something similar happened to him years ago. The 20-year-old said he was also underage at the time.
"It's terrible, the entire situation,” former church member Jessica Yale said. “It's one of those things that makes you just want to throw up thinking about it."
A Tipton County grand jury indicted Gorton on Monday and investigators picked him up Tuesday.
"In their very nature the charges are appalling,” Tipton County Sheriff Chief Billy Daugherty said. “Given the fact that the suspect the alleged offender in this incident is a pastor someone that we trust someone that we worship with on Sunday. Somewhere where we send our children is egregious, it's behind disturbing."
The Awakening Church is now closed and there is a “For Lease” sign in front of it.

"Sexual immorality" was the reason cited when longtime Pastor Ken Engelking resigned in January from Morning Star Community Church in Salem.
Four women had come forward the previous spring with allegations against Engelking, two other former church staff members and a member of an affiliated church.
In a 23-page annotated letter to the Morning Star board of directors, the women chronicled accusations of an abusive, adulterous relationship involving Engelking, and sexual assault and rape by three other men over more than 20 years, including as recently as 2010.
The church sought legal counsel, then hired a private investigator to look into the allegations. Nine months later, the board asked Engelking to resign.
Morning Star leaders declined to be interviewed for this story. In response to questions from the Statesman Journal, the board of directors provided a written statement detailing the allegations.

Larry Allen Winn(Dallas County Sheriff's Department) Larry Allen Winn (Dallas County Sheriff's Department) Larry Allen Winn, 65, was arrested Thursday on one count of sexual assault of a child. He was released from the Dallas County jail Monday after posting $25,000 bond.
Winn, a Dallas resident, ran the bus ministry at Open Door Baptist Church on South Belt Line Road. According to the church's website, the ministry provides children with rides to and from services and Sunday school.
According to Mesquite police, a church member said Winn raped her three years ago, when she was 16.
Winn was no longer listed on the church website's staff page Monday. The church did not return calls seeking comment.
Because Winn's position at the church allowed him access to children for a number of years, police think there may be more victims. Anyone with information about Winn is asked to call police at 972-285-6336.

Steven Winn worked in Mesquite's public works department for 14 years until he was fired last month just before his arrest.
Open Door was previously in the news in 2011, when senior pastor Matt Jarrell was arrested on a rape charge in West Virginia. Two days later, he hanged himself in his jail cell.

A former youth pastor has been arrested as a suspect in sexual assault cases involving children in Denver and Parker.
Joshua Clemons, 35, was arrested by Denver police on Tuesday on suspicion of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, according to a news release.
Clemons also faces two counts of the same charge in Douglas County, according to Parker police.
Cross Roads church brought allegations in the case to investigators, and the community has been cooperative during the investigation, Parker police said.

The youth pastor raped and sexually abused her “at least two to four times a week from June 2012 to June 2015,” the lawsuit says. In all, it says, he violated her at least 288 times.
The lawsuit contends that the church neglected to supervise the youth pastor, failed to fully investigate concerns about him and tried to cover up the allegations.

ABOVE: Pastor David Rowan A child sex abuse case has lead to rape charges being filed against a Florida pastor who visited Murfreesboro. The two victims in the case are sisters. The case was originally opened in 2017.
The children were interviewed and according to a police report, "Both girls made compelling and credible disclosures that Pastor David Rowan had molested them at a local hotel in Murfreesboro in 2014."
Murfreesboro Police Detective Michael Yates drove to Milton, Florida to meet with the accused pastor at his home and spoke with the man for about an hour.
A police report filed by Detective Tommy Roberts shows that Pastor Rowan was hired to speak in Rutherford County by a local church in 2014. During his visit, Rowan allegedly took the girls out for a hamburger, which is when he was said to be alone with the victims. At that time Rowan would have been 59 years old.
The report showed that the sisters were aged 14 and 15 when the rapes allegedly occurred. Apparently, the children and their mother knew the pastor before his visit to Murfreesboro. Detective Roberts reported, "The victims looked up to Pastor Rowan and counted on him for spiritual guidance."
Evidence was presented to the February 2018 Grand Jury which ended with an indictment.
On February 16, 2018, Pastor David Rowan was taken into custody by U.S. Marshal's and transported to the Santa Rosa County Jail in Florida. Rowan will soon be transported to Murfreesboro to face the charges.
CHARGES: Pastor Rowan was charged with three counts of RAPE, two counts of Unlawful Sexual Contact and one count of Sexual Battery by an Authority Figure.
Rowan is a pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Milton, Florida.

A Wichita youth pastor is in jail as of Friday evening. Chauncey Walker is accused of juvenile sex crimes.
Walker was arrested and booked into jail in August. He was charged with one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and two counts of criminal sodomy with a child.
Walker is now listed in a lawsuit filed by a woman who says he sexually abused her and raped her for several years.The lawsuit says Walker was the youth pastor at "Ground Zero" where he oversaw programs and activities for young teens. It also says he was the girls' soccer coach for the school at Word of Life Church.
It says the woman participated in the church services and community programs offered by the church.
The lawsuit was filed Thursday at the Sedgwick County court house by an attorney for the woman. The woman is now twenty, but says the abuse happened between 2012 and 2015.
The lawsuit says Walker sexually abused and raped the girl at least two to four times a week during that time and the girl was too young to consent.
It says Walker violated her more than two hundred times within three years at locations owned by the church.
It claims a church member reported seeing the girl and Walker holding hands in public and reported it to the church.
The lawsuit says the church and the senior minister, Robert Rotola, should be held accountable for not fully investigating multiple reports made to the church about Walker. The lawsuit says the church and Rotola allowed Walker's repeated violations.
The woman is asking for hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages. We reached out to the senior minister, his attorney and the woman's attorney for comment, but have not heard back yet.

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (AP) -- The former pastor of a New Jersey church has pleaded guilty to sexual assaults and other crimes involving five minors.
Seventy-four-year-old Harry Thomas of Medford entered the pleas Friday as part of an agreement with Burlington County prosecutors that calls for a sentence of 15 to 20 years without parole.
During questioning by his attorney, Thomas acknowledged sexual assault of a 9-year-old in 2005, sexual contact with three girls 7 to 9 years old in 2000 and 2010 and exposing himself and endangering the welfare of a girl between 2008 and 2010.
Authorities said all of the crimes occurred in Medford Township, where Thomas was the pastor of Come Alive New Testament Church at the time of his arrest in December. The church says he has resigned.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Kingston clergyman, Pastor Kenneth Blake, is now contemplating his next move after a Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) test proved that he is the father of the child belonging to a 12-year-old girl he is accused of raping in 2015.
The finding of the test was disclosed in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Monday when the case was mentioned.
Pastor Blake, who had denied raping or molesting the teenager, consented to the test to clear his name last August.
The Harvest Temple Apostolic Church pastor was arrested and charged with rape, grievous sexual assault, forcible abduction, sexual touching, and sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 16 years old following allegations that he had sex with the child on several occasions in 2015, resulting in her getting pregnant.
It is further alleged that the pastor gave the teen, cash and other gifts to keep the matter a secret.
Attorney for the pastor, Abel Don Foote, who is to take further instructions from his client, when contacted declined to comment.
The matter will next be heard in court on April 16.
In the meantime Joy Crawford co-Founder for Eve For Life, an organisation which champions the cause for victims of sexual abuse said results of the DNA test is a bitter victory for survivors and advocates of childhood sexual abuse.
“It is extremely tragic to watch the correlation of clergy and sexual abuse that is unfolding. This phenomena is not new, or unique to Jamaica however, because Jamaica prides and promotes itself as 'a Christian' country, even when it denies the Human Rights of all citizens, including our children. The 'girl child' has been demonised in reports of rape, and even when the predators are 'upstanding men',” she said.
However, Crawford said, “EVE for Life remains resolute however that these same nuisances are at play when media headlines and the law continue to reference rape as sex with a minor or someone under age 16 years. This very law said, the girl cannot give consent. That means NO. Sexual intercourse without consent is forced sex, and when this happens to our children it should be named rape.”

LEECHBURG, Pa. - Channel 11 was there as a retired Westmoreland County priest faced a judge on accusations that he sexually abused a 10-year-old boy.
John T. Sweeney, 74, is accused of abuse in 1991 and 1992 while he was the pastor at St. Margaret Mary in Lower Burrell. He left the Leechburg Magistrate's Office Wednesday without saying a word to Channel 11.
