The old man is simply speaking the truth. It takes a lot of money to run an effective political campaign, especially in a country like Nigeria, where voters care more about who is sharing rice on election day than they do about political philosophies or track records. People making references to America to dispute the man are simply speaking from rank ignorance, as American politics at the presidential level is by far the most expensive in the world; the real difference between America and Nigeria is that in the USA, there are at least a few limits on how much individuals can contribute to any given political campaign (even if said limits are too weak to stop individuals like the Koch Brothers or Sheldon Adelson from being kingmakers), so American political parties are funded primarily through the small donations of ordinary people, while in Nigerian politics the masses pay nothing to support any of the parties, and they correspondingly have no influence on how they are run.

If you can't get your funding from the Nigerian masses, what choice do you have but to turn to rich godfathers, unless you are rich yourself, and how many rich Nigerians are there who haven't made their money through "chopping" government funds in some way, even if disguised as "contracts" or whatever? This is where corruption inevitably enters the system, and things only get worse when you take into account all the traditional rulers and "opinion makers" who claim to be able to deliver the votes of entire communities, and want to be paid well for doing so: satisfying this latter group was the big reason behind the whole "Dasukigate" scandal in the first place.

Sowore is trying to bypass all of these issues by raising money online through GoFundMe and other such venues, but will the Nigerian diaspora fund his effort enough for it to be effective, especially in the face of the many avenues for looting available to incumbents under Nigeria's current setup? This is the big question whose answer remains to be seen.

Excellent post.

Sowore wants to go through go fund me? How many Nigerians have heard about go fund me? How many Nigerians have access to the web?

But but obailala, throwback, doctokwus, mynd44 et al believed the system could produce an incorruptible saint who wouldn't need corrupt money to emerge as the president and wouldn't protect the same corrupt elements.

I've said it repeatedly and anyone with a functional brain would clearly see that until we restructure, we'd continue having corrupt leaders. And that the most effective way to deal with corruption in this abhorrent system, pending when we restructure, is to build strong institutions and implement processes that prevent corruption; not unilaterally running at opposition figures.

Let's stop this ethnic war for crying out loud.

Can't you see that the battle is between the impoverished Masses and the very very few elites?

Easterners and Westerners have all taken part in the looting of this country, including Southerners.

This is the time for us youths irrespective of tribe and religion to come together and take back our country from these vampires.

Stop unnecessary blame game please. Let's all come behind Sowore and fight these dullards out of office.

This is the big question whose answer remains to be seen.

If the diaspora can send $25b+ annually (almost the size of our national budget) to help sustain our economy, then yes they can fund Sowore's election. But as you well know, it isn't so clear cut. And considering that more than 60% of our national/state budget is effectively wasted and used to settle political cronies (that's besides undeclared revenues and such), Sowore or anyone else who gets the diaspora war chest would still be outspent.

And that's only one facet of the whole election debacle. There is still the ethnic and religious undertones that Sowore does not quite meet. No amount of money would cover those, as was evident in 2015. We urgently need to restructure this political system. I don't know how much patchwork it can take, while we continue wasting trillions of naira annually at all levels of government.

The old man is right. Even the system wasnt corrupt, you did spend so much to gain the comparative advantage. However, financing of person is different from financing of idealogy. If an idealogy brings about greater good to the interest of the country and its citizens, why not but the reverse is the case. People dont think about the others but themselves and it has eaten deep into our system such that you cant do anything politically without compromise. Its a very long shot.

Another way is to break that system into smaller chunks and its like you put the country on reset again and thats where regionalization would have worked but as we have it, a few powerful ones dont like the idea because again they are selfish

If I may understand Musa I think he is saying the truth to some extent because looking at the way Nigeria politics stand right now if truly you are not thief it might be difficult to be president Nigeria as country is structured in such a way huge cash must flow to win even concillorship election and how would you get the huge cash is now the question.

Love of money has finished Nigeria. To even get presidential form.you need 25 million naira or more then how much will he use to campaign Can someone with his hard earned money try such What is the worth of Sowero being Sahara reporter does not mean he got the ball then where will he get the cash from if even donated for him pls who are the ones that donated the money

And this Sowero or Soweto was he not the one apc used against gej Was this boy not among those who put nigeria in the hand of clueless dullard tall for nothing man called Buhari Sorry I can't support Sowero or Soweto he can go to hell as far as I'm concern anyone that participated in selling bad market called Buhari to Nigerians I can't forgive them so I don't give a bleep about any idiot called Dowore or Soweto or whatever damn thing.

The problem I have with people like you is that you are simple minded. And that's the issue with most Nigerian youths.

Deep critical thinking eludes them.

In nigeria, social media does not prevent rigging n child voters.

That is why the call for real time camera feed.. that would eliminate child voters and rigging,as polling units with such malpractice would be cancelled outright and evidence would be available for all and sundry with a mobile device

How do you expect the people benefiting from the current structure to have the desire to restructure?

How do you build solid structure on weak foundations?

These current crop of politicians and public office holders are Nigeria's weak foundations.

They have to be uprooted first before anything can be built.

If Sowore ever wins this election, hopefully everyone will realize that you don't have to be a money bag or an old doldering fool or a young thug or a kleptomaniac to aspire to lead in this country.

Hopefully, the next elections after this coming one (provided Sowore wins) will see more youths taking over the political space.

Then we can now talk of restructuring.

Even an elementary school pupil is aware that the entire Nigerian political space is soaked in corruption and as such, the most basic form of common sense judgement entails going for a less corrupt alternative if corruption is something that bothers you.

And yes, regionalising the country would reduce the desperation for power and the corrupt money based politics it breeds, but yet again, that wouldn't solve the corruption in the system overnight if notoriously corrupt breeds are still ferried to leadership positions.
