Without Becoming A ‘Thief’ First, ‘Nobody’ Can Become Nigeria’s President – Balarabe Musa

BALARABE Musa, former Governor of Kaduna State during the Nigerian Second Republic has said without first becoming a thief it is impossible to become the President of Nigeria.

Musa stated this on Friday while he playing host to Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, when the latter visited him in Kaduna to make his presidential ambition known to the former aspirant who had contested for the same office in 2003.

Mr Sowore had asked Mr Musa why the country could not attain greater height during their days in office as leaders of the country.

Mr Musa blamed rots in the social political system which he said controls the development of the country.

“Once the system is wrong then you would have the situation we have in Nigeria.

“The quality of Nigerian leadership is thieves. Since the end of the second republic how has it been possible in Nigeria to have a political leadership which is not made up of thieves?” Musa asked rhetorically.

“I am not saying 100% of the leadership are thieves, No there are exception, for instance, I doubt if it’s upto 1% who are clean people, but when you look at it these clean people are made up of people who have not been able to steal because even stealing is not available to everybody. But these people do not constitute more than 1% of Nigeria’s population, the 99% populations are made up of thieves.

“How can you be the President of Nigeria without being a thief first? he asked, adding that “It is through stealing that you can make it.”

The former governor said the expensiveness of the Nigerian politics is one of the reason why it is not possible for a clean person to become the president of the country.

“You become a president base on politics (political party) and election. Both are based on money power.

“We have a system of survival of the fittest, Nobody can be a president of Nigeria unless he is a thief or supported by thieves.

“The reasonable estimate for the cost of campaigning for presidency in Nigeria is billions.

“Who can acquire this billions? Before the second republic it was not so. But it was no longer possible after the second republic because money power plays a leading role in politics and election.”

Social media would change all that... if not for social media would durotoye or sowore vie for presidential tickets?

Another step is the change in election sequence, it would enable mushroom parties vie for elective positions on equal platforms.. eliminate bandwagon effects.

Balarabe is sarcastically referring to the dullard Nigeria have up there.Meanwhile this is sadly the truth of Nigerian politics.

The old man is simply speaking the truth. It takes a lot of money to run an effective political campaign, especially in a country like Nigeria, where voters care more about who is sharing rice on election day than they do about political philosophies or track records. People making references to America to dispute the man are simply speaking from rank ignorance, as American politics at the presidential level is by far the most expensive in the world; the real difference between America and Nigeria is that in the USA, there are at least a few limits on how much individuals can contribute to any given political campaign (even if said limits are too weak to stop individuals like the Koch Brothers or Sheldon Adelson from being kingmakers), so American political parties are funded primarily through the small donations of ordinary people, while in Nigerian politics the masses pay nothing to support any of the parties, and they correspondingly have no influence on how they are run.

If you can't get your funding from the Nigerian masses, what choice do you have but to turn to rich godfathers, unless you are rich yourself, and how many rich Nigerians are there who haven't made their money through "chopping" government funds in some way, even if disguised as "contracts" or whatever? This is where corruption inevitably enters the system, and things only get worse when you take into account all the traditional rulers and "opinion makers" who claim to be able to deliver the votes of entire communities, and want to be paid well for doing so: satisfying this latter group was the big reason behind the whole "Dasukigate" scandal in the first place.

Sowore is trying to bypass all of these issues by raising money online through GoFundMe and other such venues, but will the Nigerian diaspora fund his effort enough for it to be effective, especially in the face of the many avenues for looting available to incumbents under Nigeria's current setup? This is the big question whose answer remains to be seen.

If I may understand Musa I think he is saying the truth to some extent because looking at the way Nigeria politics stand right now if truly you are not thief it might be difficult to be president Nigeria as country is structured in such a way huge cash must flow to win even concillorship election and how would you get the huge cash is now the question.

Love of money has finished Nigeria. To even get presidential form.you need 25 million naira or more then how much will he use to campaign Can someone with his hard earned money try such What is the worth of Sowero being Sahara reporter does not mean he got the ball then where will he get the cash from if even donated for him pls who are the ones that donated the money

And this Sowero or Soweto was he not the one apc used against gej Was this boy not among those who put nigeria in the hand of clueless dullard tall for nothing man called Buhari Sorry I can't support Sowero or Soweto he can go to hell as far as I'm concern anyone that participated in selling bad market called Buhari to Nigerians I can't forgive them so I don't give a bleep about any idiot called Dowore or Soweto or whatever damn thing.
