PART 22 The pastor that was invited came to the podium and preached till around 11.30am. I left immediately after his preaching. I got a bag of sachet water before heading back to the hostel. It was really a crazy scene at our block when i was approaching my hostel. There was a hell of noise coming out from room 14. The noise was much that I had to come out of the room to know what is happening. I was hearing from guys that some white shirts are missing in their room. Another set of guys was shouting that a guy in the same room visited the toilet and he didn’t flush it. Chai! O boy! Come see as guys storm the guy room but unfortunately, they couldn’t see the guy. One of the soldiers with a gun came down to our block to settle things before it got out of hand. I left the hostel to visit the studio. I met Ekene already. I showed him my scripts and he admitted I have done a great job. The trumpet was sounded for lunch and we heard it was the turn of platoon 2 to cook today. Being an OBS member, Mighty Mic took us all to the kitchen so we could have a free pass (since the tags are not ready yet). Getting to the kitchen, we met a long queue waiting to be served the Jollof rice and chicken that was prepared. We got in after Mighty Mic and Ify entered and we were told the food has finished on the line we are that we should move to the next line. The quantity of the food that was served in the cooler ehn, can make you cry. We had no choice than to take it that way and of course, it was with a bony fried chicken. After getting my meal ticket from Mic, I took the food to the room. I still met Pastor Ugo sleeping while I jejely devoured the little quantity of Jollof rice in the cooler. After eating, I went back to the studio only to meet my sport guys all complete. During our discussion, I decided to call Janelle. She picked and we greeted. She was complaining of a running nose (Catarrh) so she won’t be able to come and meet me in the studio. No problem I said, all well and good. It was 3.30pm. Just an hour to the first platoon football game for the corpers and my guys and I are fired to run the commentaries of the game. The game was an interesting one that sees platoon 1 winning the game on penalties. Immediately after the interview with the coaches of the two teams and some players, we head back to the studio to get prepared for the sport panorama which will start by 6.30pm so we has little time to get our scripts ready before starting the show. The show lasted for 30minutes and it was a good one. After the show, I met Esther Joe (One of the girls in the whatsapp group) for the first time one-on-one. And as expected, she was tall, chocolate in colour and a bit brute. We strolled to the mamee market from the Studio and we talked for some time before she told me she wants to go back to her hostel. I bid her farewell and headed straight to one of the stands at the mamme market where I was hearing Pastor Kumuyi’s message. After a brief chat with the owner of the shop, I left for Mama Amaka’s restaurant, ate a plate of semovita with Egusi before heading straight to the OBS Studio for the meeting which was scheduled for 8pm but I got there abit late (8.25pm) and the meeting had started already. I stood all through the meeting before I finally get back to the hostel around 9.45pm. The room was bubbling as usual. Immediately I stepped into the room, they started hailing me OBS! OBS! OBS! I greeted them before I sat down on my bunk bed. The guys were having fun and the talk was more about the platoon game which will come up tomorrow between Platoon 3 and Platoon 4 which is indirectly a war between Landlord and Ugo. Lots of fumbling from the two guys which made everyone in the room starts laughing their hearts out. Landlord was the coach of platoon 4 while Ugo is the Platoon leader of Platoon 3, so you understand the beef between them. After having a good time with the guys, I slept around 10.30pm, hoping to wake up early to get the script ready for tomorrow’s

PART 23 30TH OF NOVEMBER 2015 “DAY 6 IN CAMP “THE LECTURES” The alarm rang at 4.00am and I was surprised its morning already. I woke up with a slight headache and I had to struggle to be on my feet. I picked up the bucket under the bed before heading to the bathroom, as usual, with a long queue. By 4.38am, the trumpet was blown and we all had to rush to the parade ground for the morning drills. After the usual anthem, announcements and the morning exercise and running which was conducted by the Man’ o war we rapped things up and by 8am, it was time for breakfast. Ekene called me to come to the studio early since our show will begin by 8.45am. I got there, prepared the scripts with the guys before starting show. At 9.25am, one of the soldiers banged into the studio and informed us that all corp members should meet at the registration block. It was then I remembered it was time for the lectures which I heard might finish 2pm. By 10am, the lectures commenced and it was all about the tips of life in camp and security tips. After giving out the security tips, questions were allowed from the corpers and they were able to entertain only 3. I was feeling uneasy during all this period. The yeye food I ate in the morning is having its toll on me so I have to visit the toilet as soon as possible or else, gbege go happen for here. I left the auditorium and had to run to the hostel to shit. At 11.35am, I returned back to the auditorium and from the look of things, everyone is tired of the lectures. The OBS Man, Mr Abubakar was giving his speech when I got there. He was even “whining” us that Yobe state is one of the best state we can be. Everybody laughed. This man sef. Yobe is the best place bawo? With all this bombing incident every time. I laughed within me. Just when I was in my thought, Ella called to know where I was. I described my location to her and in a matter of minutes; she was able to find me where I am. We located somewhere shady and we were gisting about things in camp. We chatted till it was announced that the relocation form will be given to everyone today so we should all line up by platoons. When I was done, I saw Janelle and we took a walk down to the mamee market together before I retired back to my hostel. The long awaited match between platoon 3 and platoon 4 started around 4.35pm and my sport guys were nowhere to be found. I started the commentaries of the football game before mighty mic came to the rescue to assist me in the talking. Minutes into the game, the guys were fully around so Ekene was told to go to the volleyball court to cover the volleyball games while I and the other guys would mind the football game. Some minutes later, Ekene came back with the report that Platoon 9 defeated the platoon 10 in two sets i.e 25-7 and 25-18. The match went got to the penalty shootout and platoon 3 won by 5 goals to 4. I can’t stop laughing because I know the room will be fun this night since its Ugo’s team that lost the game. Landlord must be very happy this night and am sure the whole guys in room 10 would be ready to bombard ugo. After the evening show i.e sports panorama (which was done by the crew alongside a new girl in the OBS named Shope), I called Janelle. We met under the tree in front of the registration block. We discussed for a while before she asked me to walk her down to the mamee market. Getting to the mamee market, she told me she wants to meet a guy in one of the restaurant. That really got to me but I was determined not to allow anything to disrupt my happiness this evening. I left and gave her a bow for a good night and headed back to the hostel. On my way going back, I met Ugo making a call along the road. I waited for him to be through. After the call, he told me he wants to go and meet his secretary (Yetunde by name) at her hostel to settle the arrangement for the kitchen since it is the turn of his platoon to cook the next day. I followed him and I was still trying to maintain my happy mood so I kept playing back P’ Square’s beautiful onyinye on my phone. When he was through with her, the trumpet was sounded for the commencement of the social night at the usual venue and all corpers are expected to be there. Ugo, his secretary and I decided to go straight to the multipurpose hall. Along the way, Janelle called but I was not hearing what she was saying. She hanged up and she never bothered to call back neither did I bother too. We got to the registration block by 8.15pm and we were surprised to meet an already filled hall.

PART 24 THE DRAMA AND COMEDY NIGHT Ifeoma and Moses, our manager was the two people that anchored the show. The NYSC officials that was on sit was introduced before the show was commenced. The Yoruba traditional dancers were the first to come in to the stage. They danced and sang in their traditional western attire. After a round of applause from the excited crowd, the Hausas were called on to the stage and I must confess. Their dancing step was unique. We were all enjoying the show when suddenly NEPA took the light. Everybody shouted and within minutes, the light was restored back and hostilities resumed back as usual. The igbo dancers came on stage and everyone was amazed by their traditional attire which was colorful and beautiful. I must confess tonight’s social night was the best I have ever witnessed. The performance of the igbo dance group was extremely fantastic. At the later end of the show, a poster was being raised showing “WAZOBIA” and each dance group came together to prove this. The next was the short drama piece which was performed by platoon 9. The drama was about corpers being posted to Yobe and different parent’s reaction to the news. After the service, the so called corpers came back to their parents successfully hale and hearty. I just pray this drama happens in real life because no life must be lost. The rate of insecurity right here in Kangere and Yobe is not funny at all. The next and the last thing to be done for the night were dance, dance, and dance. Janelle called to ask about my whereabouts and we met under the tree in front of the hall. My mood is still on a low so I couldn’t continue with the discussion as I wanted. It’s been a mixed day for me. The little time I spent in discussing with Ella really helped in brighten me up abit. It helped lighten up my heavy heart. How I wish Janelle knows how I feel about her… Ugo on the other hand couldn’t come to the room as at 9.55pm. By the time he got back to the room, an eviction letter has been written and dropped on his bed but he redeemed himself has he bought a lot of Suya for everyone in the room to eat. It’s been a long and interesting day, but was it adventurous like I wanted?

PART 25 1 ST OF DECEMBER 2015 “DAY 7 IN CAMP” “THE ATMOSPHERE” All the stress in the camp can’t even let anyone remember that it’s a new month. The last month of the year 2015! God has been faithful isn’t it? I woke up around 2.33am and I decided to go to the toilet before having my bath. The weather was clearly different today. It was extremely cold as at that time of the hour but do I have any choice? The queue at the toilet and bathroom was not much as it used to. Most of the guys are still sleeping while aliens like us are awake to bath by this time. Our own pass witch! I spent about 6minutes on the queue before it got to my turn. Immediately I was done, I took my bath before I ran like a mad man to my room because it was extremely cold. At 2.51am, I was through with the making up and every other nonsense I had to do. I returned to my bed to have a short nap before the early morning parade. Ugo woke me up around 4.37am. I never knew I had slept for some few hours already. I hurriedly put on my shoes and headed straight to the OBS Studio to check when our show will be done. When I looked at the time table, the schedule has changed. The sport programme will now hold in the evening after the platoon games. I met Dafe in the studio so I decided to stay behind for some minutes to update my scripts. When it was 6.00am, one of the soldiers came to the studio to pursue everybody out. According to him, he said we are all cows (Laughs). Soldiers and their vulgar words sha. He pursued us till we got to the parade ground. That is the second time I will be escaping a soldier’s punishment in camp, I just pray I will be third time lucky. I joined my platoon on the line and we had the early morning exercise till the trumpet was sounded for breakfast at 8am. I went to the photo stand to snap a passport which we were told to do for the file. When I got to the photo stand, I greeted the woman that was there. We’ve been getting well together ever since I discovered that she was a Yoruba woman. I was gisting with her until when something told me to look up. Surprisingly, I saw Tiwa Savage, the man o’war girl which I admired (laughs). I pleaded with the photographer that she has to come and take the picture with me and her. We both hurriedly walked straight to the man’o war stand where she was heading to. I approached her that I would love to have a picture with her. She asked for the photographer and she showed up with her camera and gbam! I got what I wanted at last #Taking a shot with Tiwa savage# After the passport, I went to the mamee market to have my breakfast of rice and beans at mama amaka’s restaurant as the food that was cooked by the kitchen (Platoon 4) was pap and beans. Moreover, the beans have been making me purge somehow since yesterday. After the food at the mamme, I walked majestically to my hostel, feeling like a king. Well, it seems Ella was right on something about me. I count little things which I ought not to count and that keep affecting me. I think am working on that because I actually countered the ill stupid feelings I had for Janelle after I escorted her to the mamee to meet a guy. That is the second time it’ll be happening and it can’t repeat itself again. Have been beaten twice, and now I have to be three or four times wiser. Lessons learnt and I think I can feel the changes in me. It’s just 7days in camp.
