Pro-chancellor is an officer of some universities in Commonwealth countries. The pro-chancellor acts as a deputy to the chancellor and as practical chairman of the university council. The actual chief executive of a university is the vice-chancellor.

The role of the Chancellor is not just ceremonial as some people have erroneously pointed out . The Chancellor is tasked with various responsibilities including projecting a good image for the institution as well as canvassing and lobbying as needed for the development of the institution.

A good Chancellor may be the difference between a stagnant or growing endowment fund.

I got to know that Emir Sanusi of Kano is the Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), and the great Alaafin of Oyo is the Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID). Some students barely know their Chancellor or one exists.
This is cool, but what are their duties as Chancellors?

The Chancellor is the Chairman of the university's board.
No student can graduate without the approval of the board.
They work in non-execuyive roles, meaning they dont sit in an office in the university and manage the day to day affairs of the universities.
It's like chairman of the board of a bank and other organizations. Not like private companies where u have one man as Chairman/CEO.

In federal university, the president is the visitor to the uni who can sack the VC. And the chancellor is appointed by the visitor. And the chancellor reports to the visitor directly. In state uni, governor is the visitor, then same principle.

Then, what's the role of the governing council?

University chancellors actually have official responsibilities. They preside over university convocation ceremony, award certificates to students that have completed their studies on behalf of the university and help promote the good image of the school.

They are the Political Godfather of the university while the VC is the Administrative head of the University !!!
