> Constitute c’ttee to mobilise North

Electioneering appears to have kicked off in earnest for the 2011 elections. On the heels of the meeting held in Kaduna on Thursday by a group of young northern politicians to mobilise Northerners to vote for a Northern candidate in the forthcoming 2011 presidential election, a group of South-South politicians met the following day on Friday night in Warri, the Delta State capital, at the compound of national leader of the Ijaw, Chief Edwin Clarke.

Those in attendance included Clarke himself, former Chairman Board of Trustees of the People Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih; a retired Air force Commander, Chief P. W. Baikpara; High Chief A. Agbam; Chief Ingo Eteli; a senator in the second republic, Senator Francise Okpozu, and former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Roland Owie.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the meeting was far from being unanimous as several members at the meeting still held onto the view that President Goodluck Jonathan should not contest the 2011 presidential election.

For example, a source told LEADERSHIP that Senator Owie, the Edo State gubernatorial candidate of All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) in the 2003 general elections and strong supporter of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, held a strong view that it still remained the turn of the North. But Chief Anenih, who was said to have spoken authoritatively throughout the meeting, posited forcefully that they from the South-South should not be canvassing the position of the North for them.

He was quoted as saying that if the North wants power, let it fight for it itself.

“We must fight for our own son, Jonathan, to continue in power", Anenih was quoted as saying.

At the end of the day, a source said that Anenih's position won the day. Consequently, LEADERSHIP gathered that, a seven-man committee was formed- under the chairmanship of Anenih to go round the North to recruit Northern emirs into the scheme.

Since the death of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, which changed the political structures of the nation, there has been a huge controversy over zoning, especially within the PDP. While some leaders of the party believe that PDP should still maintain the zoning-which will still allow the North to produce the presidential candidate in 2011, others are of the view that the PDP zoning arrangement is unconstitutional and illegal. They affirm that the 1999 Constitution allows every qualified candidate-including Jonathan-to contest the election.

Although the president has not publicly signified his interest in the election, many of his loyalists and associate believe that he will run for the president in 2011.

Yes the presidency is not a barrel of oil, neither is it a herd of cows.

We, the South Westerners support the South South in their quest.

Jonathan is young, dynamic and vibrant. You throw up a better candidate and we will consider
