There is nothing wrong in floating a national carrier. But I think the timing is wrong. We are yet to extend railway infrastructure in the Nigeria Buhari is jumping into aviation. |

An airline is expected to start working by December 19. Said airline is owned by govt and private investors. Said government stake is 5 %, the 95 % left belongs to investors who are unknown, it yet to come on board. There is no management on board, no office. Just a logo. Govt will drop $8 million of Nigerians money to start it up, and yet no clear details. Just go down memory lane, Nigeria airways, virgin Nigeria, Air Nigeria. We are towing same path expecting a different result. If you are angry with her choice of words, no problem, but don't be blindsided by ego masked as patriotism. 1 Like 1 Share |

Abujalal: And you actually believe that Nigeria is a true nation state in the actual sense? You made a woeful assumption when you compared it with America. You are comparing a country with a contraption. Nigeria is not, has never been, and will never be a true state, if the present political configuration it run continues. First all, know that the airline its trying to create is already built on lies and fraud. PMB promised that the presidential fleet of 11 aircrafts will be made the nucleus of a new national carrier if he wins. How far with that? Due to so much criticism that he hasn't fulfilled a single one of his manifesto, he hastily put together this shenanigan to impress undiscerning folks such as you. All because 2019 is around the corner. And guess what? His cousin is the one in charge of the whole process. He's the one who went to meet with Boeing on acquiring aircrafts for the airline. The entire process lacked transparency or any competitive bidding. No, bro. The real question is, when are people like you going to learn? Your government takes you for granted because you don't use your head, but your heart. Ezekwesili fiercely stands for the truth, no matter who is involved. 2 Likes |

EweduAfonja: You stated that America would wage war for the sake of one individual. Ransome mony isn't waging war, besides Nigeria pays ransom for the release of citizens either from opportunistic kidnapers, militants in the Delta or Bokoharam terrorists. In the latter case of terrorists, there are strong arguments Nigeria shouldn't since the terrorists purchase arms with mony they receive in exchange for hostages. |

Nothing positive was actually expected from Oby, that's why she stands alone on this, there is a limit to hate or anger because even a blind man know properly well, that this venture by the FG is great in all forms. An airline that has been shit down for years, has finally been restored to better than it was but here is a woman, who claims to care for the people, declaring its failure before it started. What do we make of such persons. |

we are partly the problem of this country, how can someone see a development; a positive one at that and condemn such?....Other African countries have their own carrier.. its now time for a change and someone is condemning this. instead of seeing a positive outcome of this... funny, but when this air craft is launched she will be the first to patronize and fly Nigeria Air. I honestly support this move by Mr President unveiling our own country's carrier. good job PMB |

VULCAN:Who told you that the Nigerian govt owns Arik and Aero? Since when? What is the percentage of shareholding they have in both airlines? Using AMCON to manage an airlines receivables & payables, is not the same thing as owning it, o! |

grandstar:Oga, stop using the word 'most' when talking about airlines. Did you conduct a survey, before coming to this conclusion? What about the ones that have succeeded? Qatar Airways has been fully controlled by the Qatari government since July 2013. Isn't it working well? Etihad Airways is the second national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, and made a profit of US$14 million, by the end of 2011. Since then Etihad has bought a 29.21% stake in Air Berlin (which is Europe's sixth-largest airline), and also bought a 49% stake in the Serbian national carrier called Jat Airways. Etihad airlines is is wholly owned by the Government of Abu Dhabi. Etihad started with a fleet of 22-aircraft to become a global aviation conglomerate, with equity in more than half a dozen international airlines and a fleet of more than 700 aircraft. What about LOT Polish Airlines which is the flag carrier of Poland that was established in 1928? Currently, the Polish government owns 68% of shares in the airline. It won Global Traveler's "Best Airline in Eastern Europe Award" in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Don't let us talk about Ethiopian Airlines, RwandAir, EgyptAir, Royal Air Maroc or Turkish Airlines that are still holding their own, in the aviation industry. The Republic of Turkey owns a 49.12% interest in Turkish Airlines. Air France was established in 1933 and until 2004, 44% of Air France was owned by the French govt. But the French authorities later sold 18.4% of their shares in the airline, to now retain just about 20% of the total shareholding. How come all these different airlines did not become white elephant projects in other countries, but are doing well? There is nothing wrong with having a national air carrier, provided it is professionally managed and properly run according to international standards, with minimal state interference. |

zinizta: It's you that should think, if you actually believe that the FG can successfully run a national airline. The human casualties from the defunct Nigeria Airways are still struggling to be paid their entitlements and your FG is talking about floating another national airline. Stop being a zombie. |

poseidon12: Nigeria Airways was a successful airline for many years, until govt appointees killed its destiny. At what point in time, did its fortunes begin to decline? Why did it happen? And how? In this country, we do not like learning from history, in order to put in pre-emptive measures to prevent a repetition of failures, that took place in the past. |
Re: "The Nigeria Air MUST FAIL" - Oby Ezekwesili by grandstar(m): 9:22am On Jul 21, 2018 |
LaudableXX: The best economist who know anything about airline business will advise you to steer clear of the flag carrier business. Etihad for instance has no business existing in the first place and the only reason for it's existence are the petro-dollars that are behind it and the Abi Dhabi economy. Without it, it will collapse. Emirates is big enough to satisfy the two. Abu Dhabi is simply copying everything Dubai does. Turkish Airlines might be a truly profitable airline (though I don't it's profits or balance sheet). It's home market of Turkey welcomes 20m tourist yearly. Great to hear that a few African national carriers are holding their own. That changes nothing. Flag carriers are unnecessary especially in a cut throat business like that of private airlines. Political factors cloud the activities of flag carriers. How does a flag carrier downsize for instance? One call will end the cost pruning exercise! The unions will let the world know that Nigerian Air is sacking workers and allowing them to suffer with their children. It's tough running them as pure business. The cost of being a flag carrier is very high. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Re: "The Nigeria Air MUST FAIL" - Oby Ezekwesili by LaudableXX: 3:54pm On Jul 21, 2018 |
grandstar:Oga, please stop saying what you do not know. There are flag carriers that are privately run with minimal govt shares or interference, and still thrive by making huge profits for their owners. Air France is the flag carrier of France, just like British Airways (BA) is the flag carrier of the United Kingdom and the largest airline in Britain, based on fleet size. Air Canada is the flag carrier and largest airline of Canada, by fleet size and passengers carried. South African Airways (SAA) is the flag carrier airline for the Republic of South Africa. Japan Airlines Limited (JAL), is the flag carrier airline of Japan and the second largest in the country. How have all these airlines, been run as pure businesses, churning out profit? There are many flag carriers with private equity, and negligble govt shareholding. Most of the worlds major airlines are also flag carriers. Being a flag carrier, does not mean an airline has to be badly run or unprofitable. Please go and check what it means to be a 'flag carrier.' Kindly do not confuse it, with what it means to be a govt-owned airline. They are 2 very different things. And some flag carrier airlines have downsized in the past, or cut costs. So any new one that wants to do the same things, has abundant international examples, they can draw upon. As for Etihad Airways, if its operations are being buoyed up by petro dollars, then the management has done a good job of making it operate really well. There are airlines that are well-funded, but run badly. Nigeria earns petrodollars too, but what have we done in the aviation industry, with our own funds? |
