..she is not ready for this stage yet.

Big downgrade.

You'll also realise there's a reason players like Elizabeth Balogun and Sarah Ogoke were bench players in the previous team. Sarah frankly has not done badly cause I expected little of her. Balogun's shot stats from the Afrobasket was quite revealing.

If we have better players, even Balogun shouldn't be going. What Promise lacks in offence she makes up for in defence. We need shooters in the team.

We were supposed to improve on what we had, now it's just a downgrade. Winning the Afrobasket doesn't change that.

... Absolutely, even Ejiofor is clumsy. Alot of the ladies on the squad just walked in and picked jersey due to NBBF pressing self destruct button.

Cut Ejiofor some slack cause she played some defence. But like you rightly noted, she's clumsy and we really wouldn't miss her should she not be in the team.

...offcourse she plays defence,I am just pointing out her flaws. There is no way way in hell that any of the players starting for us is benching Chidom and Vicky....

.. Imagine a close game, and you give away fouls clumsyly... however,I like her effort, she be diving and all,but..there is a lot of growing that needs to be done...we downgraded real bad...no thank to NBBF.

It was a huge loss to the USA. Well, the former squad of Dtigress was built over 5 years to compete favourably on court with the Americans, as we all noticed under Coach Otis Hughley. This current squad needs more time together with infusion of better and more gifted players from time to time. It was the same approach that Otis used. He brought in Victoria Macaulay, Ibekwe etc before we started giving the USA team scary quarters on court. At least, we have qualified for the Olympics.

Hence my point on a few players I sincerely think do not have what we need moving forward. We shouldn't go to Paris to mark the calendar but to compete.

One disadvantage of having a lopsided roster is that you make it easy for your opponents to kill the creativity of your best players. Amy was caged by the USA cause they knew she was our best scorer.

Guess what? She only took 6 shoots yesterday. Read that again, just 6 shots and she took no 3pts shots.

It was exactly the same thing that happened against Senegal before she found spaces in the fourth quarter. Blessing Ejiofor and Ifunaya Okoro who are are worst shooters both took 9 shots with Blessing making none and Ifunaya making 25% of hers. Promise who had a terrible shooting night still found a way to make 12 shots and had 16%. The entire team has a FG percentage of 27.7% (about the same as yesterday) shooting 34% from 2pts.

Much of the blame should also go the coach. She is largely responsible for how bad the loss was. How do you not call a timeout? Every dummy knows basketball is a game of runs (momentum) and when the other team has it going you call a timeout to kill their momentum. It was like she gave up the game from the second quarter. It was sad to watch. Yes it was obvious from the second quarter we were going to lose, but Coach Rena made it worse by not giving the girls a break and killing team USA's momentum.

If you ask me, only 4 members of that team have earned their place to Paris. Amy Okonkwo, Lauren Ebo, Musa Murjanatu and Sarah Ogoke. A few of them should be considered if they work their butt off and fight for a place namely Pallas, Balogun, Promise and maybe Blessing. The problem with Pallas is that she brings nothing to the team offensively. Go check her stats. She's close to zero whether it's scoring of providing assists. She's solid on defence though. Like carbonado affirmed, Blessing is something but maybe there's something there.

Rena needs to have a training camp and invite a few of the old players and competent new ones. It's the only way forward I see.

BTW, what's the biggest loss the Dtigress have experienced historically? This loss should be one of the top I guess.

Wild fact:
D’Tigress would be seeking a first ever group stage win at the Olympics, after going 0-8 in prior group stage games at the 2004 and 2020 Olympics…

D’Tigress overall Olympic record, however, is 1-9 as the team defeated Japan in the 11th place classification game at the Athens 2004 Olympics.

I watched the Nigeria vs Belgium game at the Olympics Qualifiers last month in Antwerp, Belgium. We have a lot of work to do if we want to medal in the female basketball event of this year's Olympics. Coach Rena needs to sit down with the former Dtigress players who have not teamed up with the current squad. She needs all the best hands she can get to build a great squad for Paris 2024. Rena needs to consult with former coach of the team, Otis Hughley. The team that lost to Belgium needs the infusion of 5 very good players if we want to make make an impact at the Olympics .

The draw for the Olympic basketball tournaments starts at 7pm tonight

Meanwhile, it is important to note that In each of the final groups drawn, there will be a minimum of one and a maximum of two teams from Europe. For Africa, Americas, Asia and Oceania, there shall be no more than one team per Continent in each group.

I partially agree with you, in the sense that the women’s Afrobasket should have sufficed as the African qualifying competition to the Olympics, with at least 2 African teams heading to Paris.

But, FIBA, in their “wisdom”, chose a convoluted qualifying path that involves intercontinental qualification tournaments. And in their bid to ensure that at least one African side reaches the Olympics, they grouped Nigeria and Senegal together

Kiki Iriafen just put up a 41 Point display for Stanford at the NCAA tournament. Rena has to at the very least invite her for the training camp. We have no one with her skill set presently on the team.

. Kiki and Micheala should be invited. We also need to get a real point guard.

Not sure we have top guard right now whether in College or the WNBA, save for Arike who obviously won't be playing for us. Ezinne will probably have to come back for us to have a semblance of that. Promise wasn't promising at the qualifiers.

.. absolutely, also remember that promise is not a point guard, she is a 2 guard...if we are serious about this Olympics, atleast Vicky and Ezinne will have to comeback, then mix that with Kiki and Micheala, then Amy,Musa and the likes..infact invite everyone, let everyone fight for shirt, the most inform players picks the jersey.

I'm out of touch with the situation of the Ogwumike sisters... any chance one of them might still be able to join the team?

If we go to the Olympics with this same squad, we will be cooked... no two ways about it.

That case is settled. The committee ruled against Nneka and Elizabeth Williams, citing their extensive participation with team USA for at least ten years as reasons. Chiney I believe was cleared but could only play as a naturalized citizen. FIBA allows one naturalized citizen per window. Chiney I believe didn't like and planned to appeal. Chiney could have gone to the last Olympics but I think she decided against it.

The plan was to appeal using FIBA's rule on exception (basketball development) as a basis. Not sure they finally appeal, or if they did how that went.
