True! The corruption in this country also bids up the inflation rate and engages the CBN's resources targeted at stemming the inflation rate. However my point is that raising the minimum wage is not a viable, sensible or even sustainable solution to the poor standard of living in Nigeria. Anybody with a brain knows that it is better to raise the productivity in the country to the point that essentials such as a food can be afforded with very little amount of money. Is it better to hand a poor man 500,000 naira but the average price of what he or she purchases is around 10,000 per unit or is it better to hand the poor man 50,000 when the average price level drops to say 5k per unit. This is simple reasoning. What we need to raise is productivity and not nominal wages which will be eroded later on by inflation...and mind you, the rubbish the CBN posts as the inflation rate does not reflect regional inequalities and realities. In states like Rivers, Lagos and Abuja the minimum wage will simply be a scam.
