Why Men Get Struck By Lightning Then Women by crosart(m): 8:21pm On Aug 21, 2018
Right from the the beginning, more men have been struck by lightning than women. Although the odds of being struck by lightning in a person’s lifetime are 1 in 14000, men are way more likely to get struck and killed then women.

The World Weather Forecast analysis of lightning related deaths reveals that of the 24,000 people struck and killed by lightning per year males accounted for 79% of all deaths. More than 90% were involved in outdoor sports at about the time of the strike.

The report further revealed the following:

• Men don’t really care about the rain, unlike the ladies they don’t appreciate the threat of lightning
• They will go outside, play sports and in general, not do the safest things when they should be inside
• Lightning has claimed more lives during golfing then any sport
• The analysis showed that women had fewer deaths than men in each category
• Sports related lightning fatalities includes: golf, running, baseball and soccer
• Males are also more likely to have jobs that makes them more vulnerable to being struck by lightning.

According to a top specialist on lightning safety, John Jensenius he said “men typically find themselves in situations that heighten their vulnerability” he than said ” I think the behavior factors affects more because they are less likely to react quickly to the threat or perhaps just ignore the threat ”

Men are less likely to worry when they hear thunder; just hearing thunder suggests you are already in danger.
Reports also have shown that the age range of the greatest number of lightning related deaths is between the ages of 10-60. Most lightning victims were either heading to safety, or just few steps away from it.

Why Do Humans ACTUALLY Get Struck By Lightning

• Lightning strikes humans because they are acting as the nearest conductor for the lightning charge to earth. An electrical charge will be induced on the person about to be struck.

• Side flash also called side splash occurs when lightning strikes a taller object near the victim and a portion of the current jumps from taller objects to the victim. In essence the person acts as a short circuit.

• Ground current is when lightning strikes a tree or other objects, much of the energy travel outward from the strike in and along the ground surface. Anyone outside near a lightning strike is a potential victim.

• Lightning travels long distances in wires or other metal surfaces. Metals do not attract lightning, but it provides a path for the lightning to follow. Most indoors and outdoors casualties are due to these factors.

You don’t really have to be outside to be struck by lightning, but the chances of being struck indoors are 1 in 100. Being struck by lightning can create a lifelong discomfort because they cause nerve damage that make the nerves misfire, which the brain reads as pain.

To measure the distance of lightning, count the seconds between flash and thunder and divide by 5; that will give you how many miles the lightning is from you. Hope it doesn’t get to late before you get your answer.

Safety Tips

• When you hear a thunder, immediately move to a safe shelter
• Stay in safety for at least 30 minutes after you hear the last sound of thunder
• Stay off corded phones, computers and other electronics that puts you in direct contact with electricity
• Avoid plumbing
• Stay away from windows and doors
• Do not lie on the concrete floors or lean on walls
• Stay low, you do not want to be the tallest thing standing around
• Cars are actually better than nothing, though not as safe as being in a building.
• Avoid bodies of water, water is a good conductor of electricity
