A referee identified as Mustapha Bello was killed after being struck by lightning during a friendly football match in Madalla town, Niger State, IGBERETV reports.

Mustapha Bello, member of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFA) who was popularly known as Mustafa Coach 02 among football fans, met his tragic end on Tuesday evening, June 13, 2023, during the match played in the community’s primary and secondary schools’ field.

The match in which Suleja and Madalla youths participated, was on half time break around 5:20 pm when the incident happened.

“It was raining and all the footballers along with their fans were taken refuge inside the school’s classrooms. The referee along with his assistant (line man) rushed back to the field, demanding the players to join them,” an witness explained.

"They were only at the centre of the pitch when the thunder struck. Two of them were rushed to a hospital, where the referee was confirmed dead on arrival while his assistant was revived.”

A family member of the deceased identified as Ibrahim, said Ibrahim was buried Wednesday morning in Suleja town where he lived.

Mourning the deceased, a Facebook user, Awwal Yarima wrote;

According to a Yoruba course i studied about the gods, sango is the most precise attacker among the gods, hardly makes mistake to kill and wound the wrong person not sent to. You only need to stire it's anger on the behave of the person you want to deal with and tell the diety that the person force you to do it. The danger is that the person you want to attack must actually do something wrong to you or to some that gave you the assigment. But we were told that the mode of operation is that Lightning target middle or centre of anywhere it struck. If you notice the thunder is about to strike, run away from the centre of the road path, main road, open house without roof, entrance or open field. Just make sure you are not at the centre of the space. Yoruba will say. Ogangan ona ni alake n so. This means he patiently wait for the victim to be at central of a place where the attack and dealth will be seen by all and lead to disgrace. I doubt if all this are true though. It's just like a story to me.
