Do you know your car tires’ expiry date?

Back to 2016, Nigerian car owners had informed that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) would have a crackdown on vehicles running with “expired tires”. Obviously, only a small number of Nigerians know that tires of cars also have their dates of expiry. FRSC informed that a huge number of accidents on Nigerian roads are caused by expired tires.

So how to tell if your tires have reached their date of expiry?

First, car tires have a validity period of 4 years from the date of production (DOM). Some groups of safety in some nations recommend 6 years, but FRSC proposes a shorter period of 4 years, taking into consideration other factors like tough driving conditions in Nigeria.

Once exceeding their validity date, the tires will have more risks of being exploded, particularly when they are often used in hot weather.

To know whether your tires of the car are expired or not, take a look at the tires’ surface or its sidewall, you will see a stamp like *3006*. You can see that asterisks appear at the number’s beginning and end, but some other tires have no asterisk like the one in the below photo.

Some other tires have no asterisk

The last 4 numbers determine production’s date of the tire to the latest week. And the first two numbers show the production week, while the last two indicate the year of production.

So, we can conclude that this tire was made in the 47th week of 2008. Hence, its date of expiry would be the 47th week in 2012 (4 years after its date of production).

This is a very useful knowledge and also tip for all car owners to check your car tires frequently, which is very necessary for your safety.
