The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed an MOU with Europe's largest automotive manufacturer, Volkswagen, to produce a number of its vehicles in the country.

This was part of the events during the visit by the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, to Nigeria on the 31st of August, 2018.

The Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Okey Okechukwu Enelamah, signed on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, and Thomas Schaefer, CEO and Chairman of Volkswagen's Africa operations signed on behalf of Volkswagen.

Thomas Schaefer and Volkswagen have been working with the DG of the National Automotive Design and Development Council, Jelani Aliyu, and the agency towards the company's entry into Nigeria and the setting up of local production.

Early July this year, the National Automotive Design and Development Council and the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment had hosted Volkswagen and other global OEMs in Abuja.

Aliyu mentioned, "This MOU with Volkswagen is a progressive development as a result of that earlier engagement, and we are particularly excited because the company is very committed to new applicable technology and the local production of modern, safe and energy efficient vehicles which would be optimized for our environment."

"With Volkswagen, we have a strong stakeholder who understands the huge potential in the Nigerian market, and we are a perfect match to the company's efforts towards innovative mobility services which would both compliment and boost our economic structure."

Volkswagen has recently started vehicle production in the East African country of Rwanda this year.

Nigeria provides an even larger market, both within the country and as a gateway to the West African region.

What happens to INNOSON ?

That is a very good question which the northern political leadership in Nigeria should answer.

However, it is not farfetched to state here that the northern leadership are still bitter with the Igbos for their role in the Nigeria civil war. To this end they are stating that nothing good must go to them. Going by the event of the Biafra vs Nigeria civil war of 1967 - 1970 a civil war which lasted 3 years that witnessed the defeat of the Biafra and which also cause the death of countless number of war victims on both sides.

Going by this background or war episode, no doubt the south eastern part of Nigeria is maginalised not minding being the Japan and the Korean of Africa.

The Hausa Fulani political leadership still have grudges against the Igbos for attempting to break away from the Nigeria federation.

The Hausa Fulani do not want to recognize the inventions and technological knowhow of the Igbos not minding General Yakubu Gowon statement NO VICTOR NO VANQUISH.

That is why they are relegating the Igbos to play second fiddle and denying them the presidency.

As much as this is a good move, it would negatively impact Innoson, if not force him to close down.

I don't see him competing with an already established, global brand in a country people prefer to patronize foreign brands rather than locally made products.

20 years after it went under, the Stallion Group has announced the resuscitation of Volkswagen plant in Nigeria. The resuscitation of the plant also followed the multinational company’s launch of the first assembled in Nigeria Volkswagen passenger and commercial vehicles at its brand new plant in Lagos on Tuesday, July 7.

Following the National Automotive Industrial Plan (NAIDP) announced by the Federal Government in October 2013,
the Stallion Group had entered into collaboration with the Volkswagen Group to assemble its vehicles in Nigeria.Stallion is commencing assembly of Volkswagen’s renowned products including Passat, Jetta, CC and Amarok models.

Speaking at the occasion, Stallion’s Chairman Sunil Vaswani said: “This is a great moment for Stallion in partnering with a world leading global brand like Volkswagen. We are immensely pleased to bring back the proud legacy of Nigeria automotive industry – the Volkswagen brand that once was indigenously produced at the same premises.”

Nissan actually started assembly in Nigeria but I doubt if it's being continued.

I doubt too
I wish they succeeded and moved from assembling to actual manufacturing as it would've reduced the cost of cars in Nigeria. I was excited when it came as i wish for (fantasized) cost of brand new cars coming down and the cost of fixing their brands too reducing as stallion as dwelt with us with both sale and repairs

Well, mou's are good its the implementation that is the important thing. Truth be told Nigeria is not a market, how many people can afford to buy a new car in Nigeria? So if these companies begin operation who will buy the finished product? Government buying vehicles can't be considered as a serious market these companies need volume sales to break even.

The likes of IVM, coscharis, Peugeot, and Nissan are feeling the pressure of a weak market already, many of them depend on government agencies for survival.

Solution to this problem is increasing purchasing power of citizens.

Any country without a steel industry will struggle with manufacturing, companies like Nissan have to import all parts of the cars they assemble, when we combine the cost of parts cost of shipping and cos of clearing, the overhead is already huge thereby making the price of the vehicle expensive.
