Chief Ojike Ajanwu, a father of 9 was swept away by flood in Obolo village in Ogwuanicha, Anambra State according to Sahara Reporters.

Ajanwu was said to have drowned in his attempt to evacuate his harvested cassava from his farm, on Thursday.

His death brought the number of deaths in the flood to four, Arinze Awogu, Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, told NAN on Friday.

According to Awogu, the wife of the deceased, and her eight children — including a one-month-old baby — were at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) centre in Ogwuaniocha.

He said: “The deceased left behind a young wife, Chinasa, who hails from Ossomala and nine children; the oldest of the children is 13 years old.

“Our hearts go out to the family, and we assure them of government’s support and sincere condolences. We shall inform the governor about the incident. We are still counting the number of deaths but as at it stood at four."

This is the dividend of a failed nation. An average Nigerian, because of what he faces daily hardly thinks of survival in the context of saving his own life. He thinks of it in the context of come what may, let me scoop fuel from a fallen tanker, let me pick monies that dropped while robbers are raiding, let me just eat something at the moment, it doesn't matter that it may kill me before morning.

We have been so wired to rationalise anomalies and indulge a system that kills us silently. We are probably among the very few countries that think provision of basic amenities by the government is a big deal. It shouldn't be. They're just managers of the state. The roads they build, the power supply, the health care are all from the public fund. It is not them helping us. We are people who would rather take 5000 to vote for an aspirant without ideology and watch our children die in a state hospital that is not functioning than to vote for a sound person who would fix the hospitals.

The trend repeats itself everytime. We will lament, cry wolf and woe for our bad decision for 4 years and still, within the election time forget our pains, vote because of pittance, tribal or religious sentiments and then continue the cycle for another 4 years. Is our situation not very troubling?

Even at the polls, we hardly have to choose between two or more sound candidates. It is always a choice between two evils, then we are left thinking about which one is lesser. Sometimes, we choose the higher evil because of bags of rice or cash. Money that can't help us when we die on the road they don't fix, money that can't pay our hospital bill when the general hospitals do not have drugs. A country where aspirants ignore debates organised to test their competence and knowledge of policies, and yet they will win at the polls. The most frustrating part is the strange youths who can do anything to defend them. Is the benign madness not plainly becoming malignant, contagious and fast spreading?

I doubt if anybody can give birth in Nigeria, leave his or her kids on the street and expect them to turn out well without some divine intervention. Power failure, bad teachers, bad roads, dysfunctional homes, high crime rate, unemployment, poverty will restructure whatever sound mentality they have. The Osun and Ekiti elections are the blue litmus tests of that is to come in 2019. There will be gross violation of rule of law and standards.

The style is simple: Unleash poverty among the masses, it will rid them of the ability to think right. During election, offer them quick food or money, steal or buy their mandate. Then let the cycle continue. If we had the collective mental positioning, the type of people leading us today would have no chance at all. They won't even contest because they would know governance isn't a business meant for idiots.

Rest in peace man. You won't opt to help your cassava at the expense of your life if you were in a nation with social security, good support structure and every life matters. When a man grows in this kind of hostile nation, it is difficult to know or take the right decisions. A wife and 9 children. 10 people left at the mercy of harsh economic reality in a nation taken to her knees by arguably the most terrible leaders in human history.
