Nissan Juke 2014 and Nissan Qashqai 2013
Brake fluid has not be changed though had to replace one side front brakes cos it was eaten down.
Apart from that only oil changes now and then

You need it.
For some models its 3 years, for others it is 2 years.

You can go with 2 years

Some decisions are legal liability driven not just by pure mechanics physics or electronic principles

Like the decision to reduce the interval from 3 years to 2

Toyota cars.

According to internet sources.

Lexus recommends.

Toyota is silent.

But Lexus is a Toyota company so read between the lines.

A good rule of thumb is 20,000 miles or 2 years.

Great public service you are doing...educating people on this kind of stuff.

Toyota actually does specify brake fluid replacement intervals for (at least some of) its vehicles - I can confirm it is in the owners manual for some models (even if some of us don't follow said intervals the way we should).

To add to what you have said, I would advise car owners to discourage mechanics from meddling with their brake fluid! Mechanics often dip any old dirty rag, etc. into the brake fluid reservoir whenever they want to use brake fluid to fix paintwork damage. Unfortunately this significantly increases the risk of contaminants getting into the reservoir, master and the rest of the system. And if your mechanic needs to bleed your brakes, make sure the fluid is bled into a clean dry container if you intend to re-use it! I once had a mechanic bleed my brake fluid into a discarded, barely empty pure water satchet undecided sad. Wouldn't it be suicidal to drive a vehicle with brake fluid in that state?

Reason for thread:

Customer complaint, after repeated hard stops, brake pedal travel increases tremendously

Reason: too much moisture in the brake fluid causing it to turn into gas and making it compressible, gas is compressible, liquid far less so! As a result total loss of braking power, even replacing brake pads did not make a difference...full braking force returned as soon as the brake fluid cooled down

To avoid a situation like this, consult your manufacturer manual and replace brake fluid as per their specifications or using a commonsense schedule of every 20,000 miles or 2 years to be safe

If you are paranoid, you can replace it sooner, by sooner as soon as you notice the brake fluid has boiled, it also means that your brake fluid would have lost some of its effectiveness and also by extension, you have also lost braking power/ability.

Could this be the reason for some accidents on our roads?

The mechanic he consulted suggested that the brake fluid is ok and that the ABS is faulty and should be disconnected.

Could this also be one reason why brake components could fail and require their replacement?

Food for thought and remember, a driver is only good if he can stop the vehicle at any and all times and that job is done by brake components of which the brake fluid is a very necessary soft part which should never be taken for granted!

Engine oil does not necessarily go bad after 3,000 or 5,000 miles yet many change it, but many never consider changing brake fluid...is that not a rather worrying contradiction in service practices?

This is nice.

My story of the mechanic suggesting that the ABS be disconnected instead of replacing the fluid and your mention of the abuse of brake fluid in the brake reservoir or the use of dirty containers to salvage brake fluid is evidence that something is seriously wrong with those whom most of us entrust our means of carriage to.

Indeed it is suicidal to drive a vehicle with brake fluid in that state which is why this post came up in the first place.

Thanks for your comments.

If you had narrowed it down to a year and model, it would have been easier...manufacturers change policy often in response to market conditions and laws and evolving threats to their business

Would you have imagined that Nissan would buy out 14 year trucks if deemed unserviceable due to factory faults than face lawsuits? The cause of the failure will go into their R & D and recommended manufacturing and repair practices would change in tow

Do you know that modern Hondas have a new way of outputting codes?

When we ask for a year and a model it is to be sure what animal we are dealing with

Nowadays, the car is one of the most important things or "gadgets" in our life and we need to spend a good amount of money in order to maintain the car in a good condition. Brakes for a car is the main factor of safety and we need to be sure that these works well in order to avoid unexpected bad situations. For this we need to have good quality brake fluid inside which will offer us a good performance. If you want to understand how everything works, you can read more here, this is one of the best articles that will make you understand the difference between DOT3 and DOT4 fluid and take the right one for your car.
