The very first time that I watched a real women's football match was in 1989. All the matches I watched before then were exhibition matches that were more of comic relief than serious athletic contests.

Lagos State hosted the National Sports Festival and the venue of the women's football competition was close to my house. Many states came with teams that were really not very good, but Lagos, Bendel and Rivers states were in a completely different class from the rest. Those three states beat other states with massive scorelines like 6-0, 8-0, etc. Their players were fit and a joy to watch. The arena was always full when these three states were playing.

I later found out why these three states were better than the rest. They had professional women's football clubs and most of the girls that represented those states were from those clubs.

There was Jegede Babes in Lagos, Ufuoma Babes in Bendel and Larry's Angels in Rivers State.

Girls from those three clubs formed the nucleus of our first national team.

Meanwhile, other African countries had not even considered women's football in 1989.

I don't think there's any TV rights, but they occasionally show the Super 4 and the cup final on TV.

Predictable scoreline. The only difference is that whooping margins are reducing in African female football. The weaker teams are fast catching up with the bigger ones which is extremely good for the development of the game.
