John Obi Mikel: Comparing Him With Lionel Messi by efoghorjos: 4:32am On Jul 26, 2010
John Obi Mikel of Nigeria and Lionel Messi of Argentina were both at the world youth championship (FIFA U-20) in Netherlands in 2005, where they both shone like a Million Stars, to the delight of soccer fans the world over.

Both players played as creative/attacking midfielders for their countries at the youth championship. Argentina eventually defeated Nigeria by 2-1 at the final to win the trophy; and Lionel Messi emerged the world’s best player, while John Obi Mikel was voted second best player at the U-20 level.

Five years after, the gulf between the two players has widened so much that one begins to wonder what has happened. The Argentine went to FC Barcelona thereafter and developed his skills further to the point of wining several domestic titles, 2 champions’ league titles, 1 club world cup, 1 Olympics gold medal, European footballer of the year, world footballer of the year, etc.

But the Nigerian made the mistake of his career by allowing his father to influence him in choosing to go to Chelsea FC of England. The only achievement he can boast of till date include a few FA cups, Carling cups and community shield cup. He just won his first league title with Chelsea this year.

What went wrong?

Lionel Messi carefully chose a club side that allowed him to develop further, and brought out the best in him. John Obi Mikel, on the other hand refused a bid from Manchester United that would have enabled him maintain his position as an attacking midfielder and develop his skills further. Instead, he chose to go to Chelsea FC because of the money involved. On getting to Chelsea, Coach Jose Maurinho turned him into a defensive midfielder, and his skills nosedived. During the period he has stayed in Chelsea, Man U has won 3 league titles, 1 club world cup, 1 champions’ league title, etc. Today, he regrets his decision: he would have won 3 league titles, 1 champions’ league, 1 club world cup, several FA cups and Carling cups by now with Man U. He would have also had the opportunity to shine better than he is doing right now and perhaps be close to Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi in terms of skill. But today, he is not in the top 50 players’ list. What an Irony!

In choosing a career, one should not consider only the monetary aspect; one should think of one’s opportunity to develop further, and when the place you intend to develop your career does not guarantee you that chance, you should look elsewhere.

Besides, you should not allow anybody to influence you when it comes to choosing your career. You know what you want; why don’t you go for that which would give you satisfaction? If you make any mistakes from the onset, you may end up regretting for life.

Agreed, it is unfortunate, as Mikel would have been an amazing attacking midfielder. I only saw him play as an attacking midfielder in that final you mentioned and in the african nations cup once and he was a very good player, in that position.

I can categorically say that Jose Mourinho ruined Mikel as a player - once Essien becomes fit and Chelsea sign another defensive midfielder he will be a cast off.

If he went to Arsenal prior to Chelsea, he would have developed so much further.

This is just a joke!

A player like John Obi Mikel who can't attract a different club instead he's been stuck in Chelsea is being compared to someone in a spanish club.

Please, this calls for laughter!!!

Did Anderson and Fletcher fair better than John Obi Mikel in your absurd analysis. Less I forget, Fabregas started with Lionel Messi too, what has he recorded in his hall of Fame with Arsenal; one FA medal compare to Mikel who has recorded almost everything winnable in the Premiership.

Lionel Messi has won everything winnable in the world all thanks to a club who made everything available for him. Was there stiff competition in Barca when Messi joined the team, no, compare to the stiff competition Mikel had to cope with and today he has established himself as a world class holding midfielder in Chelsea. What achievement can one record more than that unlike his counterpart in Messi and Fabregas, who do not have to contend with anything in their respective clubs.

I encourage you whenever you are making comparison, always look beyond peripherals to make your critics known.

Messi hasn't won every award yet, he hasn't won the Ferenc Puskas Award.

So don't try overrating him.

@poster,
how many players were in holland in 2005 and apart from mikel and messi, where are the others?
if u were mikel, will u dump chelsea offering u 16 million pounds for man u offering 4 million pounds?
anderson and flecther are man u players and how have they fared? have they won world players of the year?
how many black players or african origin are playing in man u and why do u think mikel shld have been playing there by now? what happened to manucho who man u signed and how many matches did he play?
if u are not informed, manucho played just one premier league match for man u and he was sent out on loan and was later sold. and that was the game plan of fergie who is the modern day slave master when it comes to soccer and black players.
the problem with soccer analysts from nigeria like u is that u lack information otherwise u will not come up with such dirty anmd baseless arguement against mikel. do u know the man who sold mikel from lyn oslo(morgan anderson) was jailed for fraudulently selling mikel to man u. fergie and the lyn oslo director of sports were into a shady deal that mikel decided to quit.
if you are interested in man u, why not train urself and make urself available for the club.
mikel is a chelsea player and by God's grace, he is doing well for himself socderwise and financialwise.
drogba, eto and essien are all african players who have played to the highest level, have they won world player of the year? if u are not comfortable as a man, live ur life and allow mikel to live his life.
u can't love mikel more than urself. what have u done for urself and how far have u gone in ur life that made u a judge over someone else's life.
most nigerian low lives finds it comfortable advising a well to do man like mikel.
mikel as we speak can take care of ur lineage yet u judge him.
if you are realistic, u will agree with me that ur parents would prefer to have mikel as their child more than ten of u.
foolish nigerians with foolish minds. no wonder nothing is working well in our country.
most of uninformed fools like u said mikel will destroy nigerian football and were rejoicing when he left south africa and today, the cup came back with super eagles because we did not have mikel in the team.

May God Bless you Chidichris and how I wished everybody on this thread would reason like you as you have said it all about Mikel and Man U. If Mikel had signed for Man U it would have being the end of his career perhaps by now he would have been in oblivion. What has beocme of Manucho; he was sold into slavery by almighty Fergie.

I want to say it again about Fletcher and Anderson who are now playing in Mikel's stead, are they better players to Mikel of Chelsea. How do you measure progress in football? Mikel has won the most coveted trophy in England; Premier League, he has won the FA, which is the oldest inthe history of Football as far is the English foot is concerned, he has won the Carling Cup, won the Community Shield and also won Chelsea Youngest Player Award. On several ocasion he won man of the match and virtually, all the winnable in the English League

Even in Nigeria, he is the most valuable player the country could offer now,

@massach79,
thanks jare. the major problem of nigerians is that they try to politicise everything. and the best thing that happens to mikel is that he does not disturb himself with nigeria and nigerians. the guy has decided to move on with his life and forget about these evil men that lives in this evil country called nigeria.
if u look arround this forum called nairaland, u will see that 95% if not more of what they write abt mikel here is negative and this is ironically the best player nigeria has at the moment.
for u to know the value of mikel, u must learn to watch him without centiments and listen to commentators who are not nigerians or nigerian based. outside nigeria, worthy men of soccer will tell you mikel is a player but come to a country where non is doing well in football, they will all tell you that mikel is a waste.
i lost my respect for eguavon in egypt 2006 when caf gave mikel the man of the match in a game and the so called eguavon said no he does not worth it.
that was in a game mikel came from the bench to create a goal and scored one himself that made nigeria won that game.
no matter how we look at it, anyone playing his soccer with a high profile club like chelsea is a hero.

I've heard this talk over a billion times. I dont know where people got this inane notion that since Mikel and Messi stood out in Holland '05, they must always be at the same level. There's a saying that "20 friends cant play together for 20 years", its just life. Poster, even some of the people you grew up with or went to school with, you all arent on the same level. Besides, you forgot that Messi was at Barcelona at the time and Mikel was at Lynn in Norway. Players make moves that could go any way. Giovanni Dos Santos was a highly rated youngster at Barca, where is he today? What if Messi werent in Barcelona and he made a move to a club and it didnt work out for him?
Moreover, Mikel has done very well for himself. His move to Chelsea has been far from ill fated as most Nigerians love to label it. He has won a lot of trophies and has over the years established himself as a world class holding midfielder with great tackling and excellent vision

Messi is overrated and luck plays a huge part in football career. Kaka is another world class player and is rated more than Robinho yet I think the reverse should be the case besides, did any of you check the age difference between Obi and Messi?. Nigerian players shine in their peak unlike oyibo players who start on time.
Re: John Obi Mikel: Comparing Him With Lionel Messi by chidichris(m): 9:57pm On Aug 03, 2010
what an slowpoke so you are comparing manucho,djemba,fortune of maram diouf to the mikel of 2005 you must be tottally silly. mikel was a replacement for keane or scholes he would hAVE BEEN REALLY GOOD. ANYWay this topic is old lets leave mikel he wants to keep playing like mumu so be it

@12large,
if u look back at the things u wrote in the past abt mikel and what is on ground today, it will be easy to shift u to the mental rehablitation home where u belong.
if anyone says mikel is not doing well, that one is either mad or an slowpoke.
on this nairaland, who has not been compared to mikel? martins, okocha, song of cameroun and every player u can think of.
the truth is that mikel is a great man and a hero. very very relevant to be ignored even by haters.

The primary advice given to every professional sportsman or woman is: "Do what is best for you and your family". This simply means "Join the team that offers you the most money". Mikel did what was best for him and his family. Moreover he has no reason to regret his decision since he has been getting regular playing time at Chelsea. Also Ballack has gone back to Germany which means even more playing time for him (unless Essien resurfaces).

Sir Alex has said that he is not interested in African players because he can't afford to lose them for a month during the Cup of Nations. Considering this fact, what makes anybody think that Mikel would still be in Man U if he had signed for them. Sir Alex, in case you are reading this, Chelsea lost Drogba, Essien, Kalou and Mikel during this year's Cup of Nations and still won the EPL title.

Mikel is still one of the best holding midfield player in europe, for someone to av played regularly under five different world class coaches(mourinho, grant, scolari, hiddink and ancelotti) without problems and he's really making his money. Why are u even comparin these two players was it because they played 2geda at the wyc in 2005? wot about taiye taiwo, at least he was the third best player of the tournament, is he anyway among the finest left full back? Wat about the subsequents wyc's (2007, 2009) so u cant pick any other good player again? Wat about bojan, fabregas, nani and anderson? Where are all these players. . . . U really av to commend mikel for still being relevant in a star studded team like chelsea.
