The Senate yesterday passed bills for the establishment of five polytechnics, two universities, two colleges of education and one institute of technology.

The institutions are Federal Polytechnic, Kabo, Kano State; ‎Federal Polytechnic, Daura, Katsina State; Federal Polytechnic, Ikom, Cross River State; Federal Polytechnic, Langtang, Plateau State and Federal Polytechnic, Kwale, Delta State.

Others are Federal University of Education, Aguleri, Anambra State; Federal University of Technology, Manchok, Kaduna State; Federal College of Education, Usugbenu Irrua, Edo State; Federal College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, Abia State and National Institute of Construction Technology and Management, Uromi, Edo State.

The 10 proposed federal institutions are part of the over 80 that the National Assembly is currently working to establish.

Daily Trust had last Friday reported that the bills for the 80 new federal tertiary institutions ‎are at various stages of legislative processes.‎

Our correspondent reports that apart from the 80 bills, one other bill came up for first reading on Tuesday.

Thing is institutions borne out of politicization are built to fail..

Many of these reps just want to prove to their constituents that they brought universities for 'bringing' sake. These institutions are going to weigh down on Min Of Education's budget, they would weigh down Tetfund's impact.

Leave expansion in higher education to private sector. We already have enough public universities that we can't fund properly.

The existing ones are mismanaged and largely useless, and yet, they want more. It shall not be well with them.

Unless something revolutionary and radical happens, this country's future is bleak.

Imagine creating more higher institutions when the ones in place are mismanaged and inadequately funded.

Education is expensive and needs adequate funding to make it affordable for the common man but the avaricious cabal is just interested in embezzlement.

When will all this end?

If these useless lawmakers are registered members of Nairaland they will understand that we don't need anymore higher institutions for now but robust support for the present ones coz most of the so called graduates & undergraduates on this forum are nothing to write home about.

Dysfunctional system. undecided

Empty heads & half-baked mofos littered everywhere, especially those from the other side.

They know themselves! grin

This is madness.

Where are all the graduates of these places going to be employed?

ASUU is currently on strike because the government has not honoured significant portions of the 2009 agreement. Nearly 10 years on, a govt is having problems coming up with money to fund the existing ones, yet it plans to add EIGHTY more. More staff, more infrastructure to build and maintain and more graduates who will be unemployed.

Na wa o.
