Re: Should I Drop Out Of School And Concentrate On Business? by Oluwapresley(m): 10:18am On Dec 25, 2018
I'm only going to comment on this because most of the guys that commented on the first page didn't really do justice to the question.
It's sad when one is in need of a piece of advice that can change his life for good and from a vast majority, he can't seem to get a honest and also effective idea.
So, to your dilemma. Who says you can't do the two at the same time? One thing people fail to realize is that a tertiary institution and its environs provides a very large market for business people. I schooled in Obafemi Awolowo University and the average population every session was put at 35, 000 people! Notice I said average. That's for crying out loud, a very large market for any smart business minded person!
I doubt you would be directly linked to a market as large as that from a shop wherever you wanna set your shop up, well except you want to leverage on technology. With a market size of 35,000 people and technology at your grasp, who says this number can't increase?
That was OAU. I have heard of schools with far far higher average population.
So, think. Why can't you stay in school and set up a thriving business in school? I know of guys that made it for life through businesses in school.
The woli arole everyone is talking about today never dropped out from school. He is a bona fide graduate of OAU and he did MC on campus which set him up towards the right direction.
Chinko Ekun never dropped out of school. I still rem when the news was everywhere that Olamide wouldn't sign him if he didn't drop out from school. Olamide later signed him. Today, he is a graduate and he got signed on campus. All of these was even before the Olamide ish. How bout guys that did buying and selling? In one hostel in your school, you are directly linked to at least 2000 people that can patronize you.
So my question, instead of throwing one away to get another, why not take both in both hands?
Education is key! The fact that you haven't dropped out already shows u still think it is key and you don't want to lose at the end of the day.
Think. You can start up a great business in school there.

That is life for you bro
It doesn't come with a manual
If given the opportunity you had, i would have jettisoned the idea of schooling, because right now i'm a graduate with nothing to show for it (unemployed) and do business.
But then, how do we learn if we don't experience some things.
You've started already, so try to finish up your programme and if possible continue with business after graduation.

tommyken:let me take my time to share my own view with u.we have formal education nd informal i guess.let me use myself as an example.iam a graduate.with 2.1.i worked in a company in naija nd my salary at most den was 35k.but i enjoyed doing it because i was making tripple from d same work via my own business.but then at one point i wasnt satisfied cos in d same line i was working,i saw people who were never graduates and apprentice who were raking millions either by doing runs under their oga.nt stealing.like knowing when a particular goods is scarce nd hw to hide nd hijack nd den sell it very high nd remove ogas money den d rest is dias.i do d same.but then iam a graduate who ended up doing business.i later raised enough money abt 2 million naira within 3 to 4 years.nd started mine.but then i struggled to cope with the pace because i didnt learn d basics nd full trick of the business.funny enough d most apprentice after getting their own business after settlement from oga, stabilised it nd making steady progress then enrolled to part time nd eventually they will end up having d same certificate as mine nd still have a basic business foundation which will make them nt to carry files and looking for job.they re happy going to d sch as big boys cos they knw they re rich already.now fast forward nw.i struggled and customers nw were owing me so much dat i almost ran out of business.the little remaining i used nd travelled with d hope of working nd doing business.importation.now i ended up not doing a proffessional job of which was my main reason for going to sch.i do work in a production outfit which didnt even tally with d course of my study.didnt even gain employment with my certificate.but then i earn as much as what two proffessors earn combined.the buttom line of the whole story is that success is nt tied to accademics.but it gives a better chance.if u can afford formal education comfortably do it but if nt.plz nd plz u can do what fetches u money nd when u feel u re atable.u can enroll for part time cos what counts in d end is success.d ability to fend for urself and afford what u desire.thanks

if you have lost the zeal to school, my brother drop out and go concentrate on your business. one criteria for graduating with good results is the passion a student has to study, and you lost that already. this advice is for you to avoid wasting money up to your final year and accumulating over 10 carry overs that will make u abandon school at the end.

It all depends on what ur future plans are and what u plan to do with ur skol education. Sm people seek to get great jobs and Sm have great acumen for business and would still want to establish their own business irrespective of the job they get.
I would advise u finish ur education so u have both options available to u bt due to ur financial constraints u need to do either a part time job or part time skol option. Either of these 2 paths will help u get ur skol and business going.
Unless u have a very lucrative business that can’t wait I think u shud finish ur skol bt get a part time job or business skill. The education in skol helps if u know how to apply it.

I am speaking with superhumans that I can't see but they are seeing through the eyes of my mind even before I finish forming word in my own thoughts and I hear their voices shutting me up before I manage to think. This is going for years now and nobody is seeing it. 24/7 even as I type this message always calling me mumu, mumu nonstop then later debate for some time. And then say, hail the king. Who is the king?
As a life ambassador or soldier who went through formal education in school, church and most importantly from home with a big heart, they are cutting my life short, by always making me sad, from the loss of my parents to my current health condition and now feasting inside my heart like monkey jumping from one tree/person to the other and I don't seem to have the number of rescue team. My point is that those who have such gifts but choose to misuse it are the ungrateful servants that should be cast into hell.
That said, I think you should follow your instinct.

You must have gotten as much advice you require already. You've gone farther than you should look back now. I understand this ASUU matter never helped too and it might have birthed the thought of quitting but you shouldn't ditch school at this point. Find a way around it by investing your time and energy into your business during this strike period and other breaks you'd be having. You'll be through in no time and you'll be better for it. I pray divine help comes your way. The ball is in your court brother, play it wisely.
Re: Should I Drop Out Of School And Concentrate On Business? by ItsTime4me(m): 10:42am On Dec 25, 2018
You should have sought for this advice before taking that step. Why do people go to school? In order to get a descent life in the long run. But it is very unfortunate that the clime in which we find ourselves hardly affords us that opportunity. You were already educated as an SSCE holder. You just wanted a higher education, which is not necessary to become successful in life.
Since you were into a business that was flourishing, you should have stuck to it and after getting your feet firm to ground, after becoming well off financially, you may then proceed to school if you so desire. After all, one can acquire higher education at any age in life.
However, the deed is already done. So what's the way forward? Why are you contemplating dropping out? Is it finance? Is it the thought of what the future holds?
If you have the means to see yourself through school, then continue. But if you don't have the where withal or you don't have a sponsor, Hmmmmm! Then you really need to sit down and ask yourself what you really want. Are you ready go through the stress of schooling, perhaps doing odd jobs in school to fend for yourself, when you're not sure of whether that certificate will fetch you a decent job? Or would you rather drop out, now that you're just in 200level, in order to make money and then go back to school later? The choice is yours to make.
If your problem is about the fears of the future, please be optimistic. As long as you have the means to continue, please do, because you are already in it. It is a good thing you already have a good business idea. The worst case scenario is that if your certificate does not fetch you your desired job, you may fall back to your business, which according to you is not a bad one.
This is wishing you the very best in your eventual decision.

university education is over-rated. Make the money and go to school later. University education only breeds a mindset of being a job seeker and not a job creator.

Abyima:Who says society doesn't value waec anymore Many people waste precious time in the university to acquire degrees just so they can brag about it and I guess that is what you mean by society not valuing waec.
I'm part of the society and I value a waec holder who can solve my problem either with technical skills or commercial expertise than a university graduate who only has a degree certificate to brag about.
@op, please save yourself all the troubles by dropping out now, unless you are sure the course you are studying can get you into a good career when you graduate.

I think formal education is overrated-- and before you vilify me, I have done enough schooling as a medical doctor.
While about 95% of kids are creative as 5 year olds, it drops drastically when they are 10, to just 5% at 40years.
Look around you we have left the 'certificate' age and are now in the 'skill' age.
I remember this small-time patent medicine seller making sales of 60k a day years back ( with maybe 30% in profits).
I also know a mechanic who put his back into work and has made tons of money, with all his kids schooling abroad. He, while we were talking once, told me the greater risk is doing a salary job! ( I had tried to explain that business, although having good returns was risky)
Imagine someone wasting 5-6 years in school then understanding afterwards he needs to learn a trade-- and I mean waste.
But the question is are you sure you will thrive in business?
If you are, maybe dropping out would be best for you. You could enroll for a part time course ( to massage your ego), continue without paying 'much' attention to it or just say ''Bleep' it, I'm done!" But the ball is in your court. This decision will make or break you. Many people wonder at how important university education is when they are done with NYSC however sha!
In a place like the US, university education is not a must o, people here still carry it on their heads like gala and end up working horrible/ abusive jobs at a fraction of their true worth, just because of fear of the unknown.
Even when you want to start off business, you are going to be advised by some to just work a bit ( which you might do), have some savings...bla bla... Before you know it you have done 30 years and it's time to retire-- is that all God made you for?!
So because of formal education, most people don't even identify their 'peculiar' skills, which is the key to true freedom and wealth in life. You are just wired to think in a particular way, and as there are more like you, the employer can easily rubbish you and chose someone else.
If you function at the level of your 'peculiar' skills and hone it, which you might do under your uncle, you should not be poor.
The man with money will employ the graduate sha!

I understand ur situation cos I have being in your shoes. My advice goes thus; differ the admission by a year or two, seek for money elsewhere to make up the 100k u already have, then venture into small scale trading like provision or drinks. If I were u I would combine provision with drinks cos most people can do without drinking these days. U can equally move to National Open university where you will have time to study and also manage ur business.
Re: Should I Drop Out Of School And Concentrate On Business? by frozen70(f): 11:38am On Dec 25, 2018
You are about making a mistake that you will regret when the time comes
Pls continue with your schooling
God will see you through
It's true that most graduates don't have work, but you can't compare yourself who is a graduate and a non graduate when you get to certain aspects of your life and business
Make call to family and friends to help you out financially, very soon you will be through then continue your business with an additional knowledge of your university degree
You have done well by struggling to get admission which is not easy. Nothing good comes easy, you must pass through some hardtimes in life before you become a successful man
Your Aunty abroad that sent money to you, plead with her to assist you and see you through
Your uncle that lead you to the business, humble your self and beg him to see you through
With prayers God will make the road a smooth walk for you
