It's no longer News that former president Aliyu Shehu Shagari is dead and has since been buried, what baffles this writer is the suggestion by a well known senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) of Yoruba descent, in particular an Ondo state indigene, that the Federal university of technology, Akure (FUTA) be renamed Aliyu Shehu Shagari university of technology, Akure (ASSUTA), in order to immortalize the late former president.
To begin with, it is no longer hip, or in Vogue to name higher institution of learning after after a person in order to immortalize them, the Massachusetts institute of technology (MIT), Harvard's and Howard's of the world have existed for so long and have been symnbol of greatness and breakthrough in science and technology, nevertheless their names have never been changed not even to honour even their greatest benefactor or president or former President of their respective resident country. The likes of John D. Rockerfeller, Vanderbilt and the endless list of achievers and philanthropists who have in one way or the other contributed massively and greatly to the growth of this ivory league schools have never been considered with worth naming these schools after and that's in no way belittling their achievements in the world or their contributions to the schools.
Secondly, looking at the way Nigeria is, Note, I am a detribalized Nigerian and also a realist, there is no higher institution of learning in northern Nigeria that has been named after a Yoruba elderstate man or former president or what have you or any other southerner. Better put, in the six geopolitical zones of this country, institutions whose name has been changed have been done to honour someone from that region or in a case where the name was given right from the establishment of the institution.
This brings me to ask a worrying question, why are Yoruba leaders and elders always ready to sell their people and heritage cheap in order to score cheap political gains?
It is these same type of leaders and elders that will utter reckless statement like " one day an Igbo man will become governor of Lagos" in order to court and win the votes of Igbo's resident in Lagos.
As earlier stated, I am not a tribal bigot, only a realist who believes strongly in the principles of reciprocity, therefore since there has never been a precedence, my dearest Alma Mater, the Federal university of technology Akure should not be used as a lab rat or tool to score point

Good enough the 'well known SAN of Yoruba descent' also owns a university in the SW geopolitical zone. To show his sincerity of purpose, he should please go ahead and rename his own university in honour of the late former President ( May Allah grant him Aljannah Firdausi. Aameen.)
