if you stop kidnappings, of course, the port will be busy and vessels will start calling, but the moment you kidnap one sailor, they will run back to lagos.

Dredging is an ongoing process what do they mean by "complete"
This channel has a high siltation rate and so we will be nack to square one in no time

The reason Lagos remains viable is its relatively low maintenaance cost

The way the FG operates is shameful

Eveb in the oil sector its main cash cow they never answer cash call and only know ho to collect cash

Lagos pays its way and that is why they get away with it. If this Port starts making money they will steal it or share in in Abuja and in 2 years time when it is time for another dredging they will sttart stories and the port will fold up

In Lagos do they put any money back?? No 13% derivation ,nothing. No investment on the roads out of the Port

The only reason Lagos survives is it pays its way. Even Lagos that is on the sea needs dredging from time to time

I really do not see them releasing another $44 million for dredging in Warri any time soon

Very likely another profound lie and fake news. Even the watery nature of the story confirms it..!!

The Vanguard is basing the "confirmation of the STORY on "a Warri based Customs broker and former National Financial Secretary of the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents, ANLCA, Val Orhobabhor, said he gathered that the dredging project has been completed"

It is not possible to complete a major dredging of the sea route from Escravos Bar (the sea) to Warri Port; a distance of 91 Nautical Miles (169km of river) in so short a time. The scope of work for a hitherto poorly maintained channel is huge and there are lot of issues to contend with including community matters and major oil pipelines that crisscross the channel that would need to be further lowered to increase the depth of the channel to allow ships of higher draught.

Which company executed this major dredging work? where was it based like site office? from where did they mobilise? did they employ locals? How is it possible that they completed this dredging and nobody heard of an ongoing project?

How can people lie like this!

A lot f people make emotional rants against the Port of Lagos.

The reason it survives is because it pays its way
the government puts little money back
Who runs a business like that?

In the Delta there is a huge maintenance cost and money will never be released in a timely and orderly way
What should be operating as a business passes budget through the National Assembly
It is IMPOSSIBLE for the Federal government to run ports in places like Delta and Rivers state because of the terrain
Perhaps Ibaka would be a better opption but where is the money to build the ports and then the evacuation infrastructure ie roads and rail??

Add to that the restivenes over oil and you can see that without resource control it will NEVER happen

This announcement is a gimmick
What is the maximum capacity of Warri and where is the evacuation infrastructure?

I can bet that the next TWO new ports in Nigeria wil be in Lagos this is obvious to any business person.

The FG needs to hands of the ports and let the states develop them and keep the proceeds

You're projecting just because you personally didn't hear about this months ago doesnt mean nobody did. I can betyou dont have google alerts for news on boring port projects. The company that handled project was Dredging International Services Nigeria (DISN) Limited. There's plenty of related articles about this project if you're interested.

You're point about the pipelines is also false. NPA simply didnt dredge beyond 7.5 meters to avoid the pipelines. Email the company they'll have the answers to the rest of your questions.

The issue about the port is not just about dredging..it is also lowering of the pipeline to accommodate the larger ships. If this is dredge to maintain status-quo then it is not worth the salt. I still maintain that quality dredging of 91 nautical miles of a high silting river is not plausible by our standards....is there a sand-fill somewhere where the dredged material/sand was relocated?

The Warri and Delta ports issue is NOT one quick adhoc dredging that even people who use the river route have not confirmed on this thread......it is a major project.

Stop this joke please

NPA never planned on making this port behond 7.5 meters because NNPC didnt move pipelines. They didnt feel like waiting months so they just went ahead. The warri port is only going to be dredged to 7 meters. The only joker is you going on and on about project you knew nothing about. You had preconceived notions sbout scope without knowing what project goals or company handling. Again direct your questions at NPA or the company if you're actually interested.

The port has structural issues because it on the low end of the river. The will have to routine dredging stop silt build up. The former NPA MD suggesting building wall on both sides of channel to prevent that. These shouldnt be considerdd major projects its just routine work. The major works are deep sea port projects like Lekki Ibom and Badagry are.
