I have an opportunity to travel to Cyprus but my problem is I know nothing about Cyprus. I'm a father of one, a lecturer in one private college of Education in Osun State. I just want to seek a greener pastures but would Cyprus be a great place to go? is going to Cyprus worth quiting my job for? Thinking of Furthering my education by opting for my PhD (well as a consolation) before I come back. my intention really is wanting to live a better life.

As long as you get a good job doing over there, forget that old saying about "no place like home" cos it really doesn't include if you are from Nigeria.. Everywhere is better than Nigeria presently.

Are u going to cyprus to do yahoo?
If no, u better face ur college of education job before someone else take it. since u even have a son. No be d job u take gather d travel money? If not USA, CANADA & AUSTRALIA, i will advice anyone to think twice before traveling...there is no easy money anywhere. When u are opportuned to relate with these foreigners, they struggle hard to raise $100 dollars. e no easy there at all.

Have you ever been to Cyprus, you that is just blabbing? I have at least consulted for companies there so I know the industries that have prospects there. Most of you talking don't even have a passport.
Shut up!
This is how u guys deceive people out of nigeria, on getting there u guys no longer answer calls. Can u promise to give him a good job if he gets to Cyprus? How many of your relatives have u help now working in Cyprus? There are no jobs in Cyprus. Except he is going there to do yahoo because of steady electricity & internet connection.

op you see that rubbiish guy, there is a bit of truth in what he's saying. I have two friends in cyprus, they said things are hard somehow, most Nigerian students are doing yahoo.
You can take your time and read about Cyprus threads on NL very well before u take that step.

Anyway, now that I have let the ignorant people have their say, I can now advise you.

Cyprus is divided into two. The South is the internationally recognized state. North Cyprus was annexed by a 1974 Turkish invasion and has no international recognition. Many Nigerians are being fooled to head to North Cyprus, which is a dead zone.

South Cyprus has three booming industries: financial services, shipping/logistics and hospitality (seasonal). If you want to succeed in Cyprus, pick up skills you can use in these sectors. I have a professional qualification which enables me consult for companies in their financial services industry so I should know better.

Forget the "there are no jobs" bullshit. There will never be jobs for the unskilled, be it in US, UK, Europe is even in Naija. If you have the requisite skills, you will make it.

We even have many Nigerian footballers plying their league.

North Cyprus? Please forget it

Even the South na management but if its a confirmed work/employment permit, you can give it a go if you are desperate about relocation.

Omotola is rich, her daughter doesn't need to hustle, all she needs is admission and she'll get everything else from her parents. Unlike the OP who's main reason is to hustle. Cyprus is like going to Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, which type of hustle is he going to do?

The truth is, I have not been outside nigeria b4 so I will not speak as if I have stepped my foot outside this country, .

But I have friends in different European countries and they keep saying it,

When u have a skill and u travel out, u wouldn't be among those shouting no work,

80% of those shouting no work in dis country. Many of them are unskilled, probably did yahoo yahoo b4 and money no gree show up again decided to travel out without any skill

Dear op,

I have come... allow me to open your eyes about T.R.N.C or North Cyprus.

1. If you can't speak Turkish, "You will Suffer" especially if you claim to have a job there. English is scarcely spoken there, so the only people who do are mostly foreigners.

2. The currency unit in Cyprus is the Turkish lira, and the maximum you will get paid is 2800-3000TL which is about 500usd assuming the exchange rate is 5.4tl- 1usd (and I am talking about the maximum wage) ...
Let's do a lil bit of economics, from that 3000TL at least 700TL will go for your rent and bills per month, at least 800TL for monthly feeding it could be more if you eat healthily and visit restaurants, you will definitely make calls to your family so at least 120TL monthly for international call and data package on Turkcell, other miscellaneous expenses I will chuck down to 400TL per month, it could be more it could be less, now you are left with 1000TL which is barely 200usd, that's what you get to send at the end of running your pay. Is it worth it?

3. Prepare for bouts of Racial profiling by the locals especially if you are not a student, a very common scenario in North Cyprus.

4. As much as Cyprus is a very beautiful island in General, You will be going to a globally disputed and illegal Island... put that in mind.

5. The sun there is on another level, it can roast you alive during summers (I experienced 46°c once) so if your job makes you work outside... May God protect your hussle.

6. You can't self sponsor your university tuition with the salary of your job there esp for a PHD program except you get a scholarship... it's impossible, why? Because you get paid in Liras while the tuition fees are usually in hard currency.

7. North Cyprus is like an Annex of Turkey, so expect a Turkish layout, not a European layout.

8. Everything is expensive there I.e Island price.

9. Most professional jobs are reserved for their nationals so your job is most likely going to be a blue collar job.

10. Flirt with a Cypriot lady and you are dead.

11. Expect a society that has settings which do not support integration.

12. Yahoo boys are very common, mostly Nigerians.

13. You will have to work very hard... three times the effort you do in Nigeria, oh I need to inform you of something called Mesai-overtime, that is where you will see work, Turkish people love work.
