How To Make Money Running A Bar Business In Nigeria by Mybussinessmind: 5:03pm On Mar 30, 2019
Bar business is a very expensive but yet lucrative and fun business to carry out. Most Nigerian men like to hang out with friends and family after a long day’s job. Some love to feel good may be after having a bad or stressful day, just to chill the nerves before heading home. 70% of Nigerian men take alcohol and they love the feeling when it’s taken with people they love so they prefer a joint where they can chill, but the problem is most of this men don’t see places of their taste where they can get satisfied at same time. I can remember staying in an area where there was no bar to hang out, then I and my friends always went very far to find a suitable spot to chill. As an average entrepreneur you would agree with me that was a very good opportunity to start up a bar business in that area.

Football is a great attraction to bars in as many football lovers, in a quest to stop distractions by either their wife, children or relatives and friends hit the bar to watch football.

Let’s go into the main business of the day..!

STARTING A BAR BUSINESS

How do you go about the bar business in Nigeria?

The Following are tips to setup a bar in Nigeria;

1. FIND A GOOD LOCATION

Getting a very good location is key to the success of every business, any business with a very nice location succeeds tremendously with minimum stress. A good location will expose the lucrative nature of bar business.

You’ll need to locate your bar in a place that’s open and near to your potential customers. A place of heavy traffic can be best because anyone can rush in and order. If you can get one on a busy junction or street, it will be good as well.

2. GET A NAME

It is important that every business has a name that distinguishes it from others. And bar isn’t an exception. Therefore, create a simple name that people will have no trouble calling. If anyone has to meet anyone in your bar, it’s an easy call.

3. APPLY FOR A BUSINESS LICENSE

Beverages are commodities taken into the body whether alcohol or soft drinks, as a result you need to get a license to back you when selling this commodities. Most state governments do not joke with this because it’s a major source of income for them.

Apply for a license in advance because it will take time before you can get it. The requirements also tend to vary from one place (state) to another, so it is important that you comply properly.

4. FURNISH YOUR BAR

Bar furnishing is an integral part of opening a bar, the level at which your bar is furnished determines the kind of customers you would attract. Here are some items used in furnishing a bar:

• Refrigerator/Freezers: You’ll need one of these for chilling those drinks because they will always ask: is it cold? Getting two large sizes might be good if you aspire to start big.

• Television: Having a television is a must to keep your customers entertained. The more relaxed they feel, the more they order.

• Stools and chairs: This is the primary equipment you need in your bar. They can be put in a round table manner and some close to the wine shelve with a steward at hand.

• Air conditioner: This is optional, not really necessary but if as a starter you can afford it then you should go for it.

· Generator: Bar activities always happen in the night, which means, you need a backup generator in case the usual thing happens, (power failure) and to keep other necessities that require electricity in their place.

you can also buy items like Bar napkins, Straws and stirrers, Glassware, Mixing glasses, Cocktail shakers and strainers, Liquor pourers, Cocktail mixes, Garnishes.

5. STOCK YOUR BAR

Depending on the type of bar you would like to operate, you’ll need to finalize your food and drink menu and start searching for reliable suppliers. Things are pretty simple if you are opening beer or a specialty (wine) bar, you just need to identify the products you will feature at your bar.

Yet, if you plan to serve liquor as well, put out some paper and start doing the inventory. You can serve other items like Nkwobi, goat meat, pork, pepper soup, chicken etc. customer prefer to drink their alcohol along with these.

6. PROVIDE ENTERTAINMENT

One thing that attracts customers to bars is the type of entertainment they get from there. Some bars provide life band performances, some employ comedians to come and entertain customers. But as an upcoming entrepreneur you can start by making sure there is a television or two which show life matches or even music videos and also movies this makes customers cool their nerves and relax. Remember the aim is to create a place which can serve as home away from home.

Many Nigerian men love football so much. You should use it as a tool to attract customers by showing live matches in all the leagues. If you do this regularly, your bar will never be empty as you will be overwhelmed by the influx of customers.

7. GET HELPING HANDS

You know who you need; you know how much you can afford to pay, now it’s time to interview some potential individuals who could handle customers and are good in public relations. This is very important because your staff behaviour to customers will determine if they will return or not. They must be very well trained on how best to serve, importance of courtesy and all forms of body language. Also, they must be trained on tolerance as many inebriated individuals tend to misbehave, hence endurance is needed because they are your customers who will surely return again and again.

8. PROVIDE SECURITY

With the way things are going in the country right now you would agree with me that a security personnel is needed in almost everything we do. Depending on the largeness of the bar you can decide to appoint two or three security personnel just in case, just in case something happens maybe a fight or any inconvenience.

9. PROMOTE YOUR BAR VIA SOCIAL MEDIA

These days, if your bar does not have a Facebook page it is basically non-existent. Make sure you have created a custom page header that fits in the style of your bar; have some cool, high-resolution pictures of the menu and interiors in the albums; opening hours and location on the map stated.

After doing all of these believe me you are on your way to being a successful entrepreneur. You have to be very creative and innovative to succeed in this business.
