My girlfriend and I have been dating for almost 2years. Just last month I confirmed that both of us are AS. I was actually preparing to introduce her to my parents as my wife to be. But this discovery is a shock to me and I have decided to opt out of the relationship because I know what sickle cell disease is. She want us to continue afterall we have posibillities of having other normal children as she claimed. Please I will appreciate any advice because we both love ourselves and we will both find it uneasy building another relationship.

Seek medical advice before u go ahead with the marriage. I learnt the first two kids don't turn out to be sicklers,but im not too sure.

The mistakes our fore-fathers made can be avoided now that we know better.

But i dont think it could be done here in Nigeria~ tongue

Besides Seek medical advice, I believe your 3rd/4th child mite have the SS genes wiv him/her

It is a risk you have to decide upon yourself:

I had an aunty, although it did not make logical sense, but two outta 4kids were SS.

Answer this question(s)

- What if the first child is happens to be SS . . do you think you can handle it?

My two cents: it is not worth it. Avoid what you can especially if it has to do with a health issue that you cannot control. Except you are ready to terminate the pregnancy once you know the genotype.

The child will be in pains, you will not be happy and the other healthy kids will also suffer for it since the will be ignored most of the time.

My dad's driver was actually relieved his SS child died - he spent all his money on the child whom was still goin to die.

People are goin to say whatever but you and your family will be the one to bear the burden.

You can't beat the statistical odds.

1/4 chance of AA, 1/2 chance of AS, 1/4 chance of SS.

There is no way to select or diagnose an egg or sperm for the genotype. However, there is a way to increase the odds of having an AS or AA baby, without using donor sperm or eggs. But you have to be willing to put your ethics aside.

Here it is:

Using IVF, have several fertilised eggs implanted (2-3).
At about 8-12 weeks gestation, have chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and have this analysed for the genotype - this is a small part of the early placenta, and is the baby's tissue. It must be done using genetic sequencing, as ordinary testing for HbS will not be useful, because the haemoglobins are different at that age. You will then know which babies have AA, AS, or SS genotype. You can then have a selective termination based on these results, leaving only AS and AA babies. Clearly there is a possibility of having all of the babies as SS, although this would be very low, leading to possibly all the babies being terminated, or of having none of the babies as SS, in which case you would be having a very large family all at once.

I would not recommend this method, however, as there is a chance of causing a miscarriage collecting the CVS. Also the ethical considerations of terminating (ie killing) one or more babies while leaving the others is obviously hard to condone. But I know similar procedures to this have been done, for similar conditions.

Again, I only answer this because you asked.

why did it take you this long before finding about your genotypes. My philosophy is should i meet a girl since i know i am AS after asking for her name the next question is what is your genotype cos i don't want to start something, give all my all to it and then one day i'll have to give it up.
You have to use wisdom here. The probabilities are slim and you might not want to take chances. I studied Genetics the results are catastrophic should the child not be AS.

first two kids not being sicklers is false. You can't predict the offspring genotype until it is delivered. There are cases where you have first two children as normal children and there are also cases where the first two are sicklers.

Am talking frm experience, three out of d 1st four kids in my family, turned out to be sicklers. Weve lost 2 for now n d third one is nt findin it easy at all, n he happens to b d eldest child in d family. Bros abeg abort dat mission its nt worth it.

It's not worth it. Marriage is stressful enough by itself. You don't want to deliberately add more strain. Having SS kids isnt an easy thing.

its a type of genotype inwhich should to couples have alike there are possibilities of them giving birth to children known as sicklers having a genotype as SS.

For an individual with an AS genotype he/she is adviced to marry individuals with blood genotype AA.

I know a family that are both AS and have 4 kids wiv 3 of em boys as AS and the last Girl as an AA

thats just luck. i know of a family who decided to take the risk, the first two children boys boys and both AA, immediately after that they called it quit about giving birth. i also know of another family both couples are doctors, they tried it and it didn't go well with them, they had SS which eventually died. tell me this ones don't have GOD
