5 Recent Revolutionary Innovations In The Automotive Sector by AutoJoshNIG: 1:25pm On Apr 18, 2019
In the past few years, the world has witnessed some innovations in the automotive sector.

These innovations are changing the traditional ways that automobiles function.

Different reasons have given rise to the re-engineering of the car to have some of these innovations, for instance, the Climate change issues are forcing the world to go green in their choices of energy, etc.

In this article, we are going to be discussing the 5 most popular car innovations that are revolutionizing the auto sector.

Electric Vehicle (EV)

An electric vehicle or “EV” is a car that is powered by electricity.

An EV is propelled by one or more electric motors, using energy typically stored in rechargeable batteries.

Concerns about increasing oil prices, the desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, together with advances in battery technology are some of the reasons why the world is witnessing the manufacture of Electric Vehicles.

EVs can be charged at a variety of charging stations, these charging stations can be installed in both houses and public areas.

In several countries, tax credits, subsidies, and other incentives have been put in place to encourage the citizens to adopt the EVs.

The two best-selling electric vehicles, the Nissan Leaf, and the Tesla Model S, have ranges reaching 151 miles (243 km) and, 335 miles (539 km) respectively.

As of June 2017, there are over 2 million electric cars in use around the world.

Autonomous cars

Autonomous cars are cars that can drive themselves. They do not need a driver for them to move around.

Autonomous Cars are also referred to as driverless cars, robotic cars or self-driving cars.

They move around by sensing their environment and navigating around without human input.

A variety of techniques is combined for them to be able to perceive and navigate around the environment. Some of the techniques include laser light, radar, GPS, odometry and computer vision.

Advanced control systems interpret sensory information to identify appropriate navigation paths, as well as obstacles and relevant signage.

The use of Autonomous Cars has several benefits. Some of them include reduced mobility and infrastructure costs, increased safety, increased mobility, increased customer satisfaction and reduced crime. They would also contribute to a significant reduction in traffic collision.

Hybrid Vehicles

Hybrid vehicles are vehicles with a petrol engine and an electric motor. Either the petrol engine or the electric motor can propel the car.

The internal combustion engine of the car drives an electric generator that powers an electric motor.

The basic principle with hybrid vehicles is that the different motors work better at different speeds; the electric motor is more efficient at producing torque, or turning power, and the combustion engine is better for maintaining high speed (better than the typical electric motor).

Switching from one to the other at the proper time while speeding up yields a win-win in terms of energy efficiency, as such that translates into greater fuel efficiency, for example.

Ride-sharing

Ride-sharing is a service where someone can request for a ride at very short notice, using an app.

The request is made to a pool of cars, run by specific carpooling companies, of which one of them respond to the request.

Ride-sharing is also known as real-time ridesharing, instant ridesharing, dynamic ridesharing, ad-hoc ridesharing, on-demand ridesharing, and dynamic carpooling.

Companies that operate these pools of cars are called ride-share Company.

Carpooling for ridesharing services makes use of three recent technologies advances. They include.

a. Smartphones for a traveller to request a ride from wherever they happen to be
b. GPS navigation devices to determine a driver's route and arrange the shared ride
c. Social networks to establish trust and accountability between drivers and passengers
d. Some examples of ride-sharing platforms are Uber, Bolt (formerly Taxify), Oga Taxi, etc.

Car sharing

Car sharing is a system where people can rent cars for short periods – often by hours.

Car sharing is practised in countries like the US, Australia, Canada. In the UK, it is referred to as Car clubs.

Car sharing services are available in over 1,000 cities in several countries.

This system appeals to people who only need to drive a car occasionally. This model is also attractive to people who love to have access to different types or models of cars.

Organizations offering this service offer the cars for short-term access to transportation on an on-needed basis either for personal transportation or goods delivery.

As of December 2012, there were an estimated 1.7 million car-sharing members in 27 countries.

Car sharing in Nigeria ? Very heavy risk
Reasons:
On the side of the sharer: The person who came to hire the car might steal it (even with you car tracker they'll still sell the part and even the tracker at Ladipo), it might get damaged or develop a fault and the sharee will say its not his fault... Trouble done start be that

On the side of the sharee: you might be driving one day and danfo go just scratch you.
Lastma, vio or road safety fit arrest you and impound the motor for whatever reason they deem fit.
Motor fit develop problem as you dy drive am.
And a whole lots more

But in the end what is life without risk

As regards manufacturing, only an unwise person would go to school today to study mechanical engineering except he focuses on the design aspect like manufacturing.

There arent pure mechanical stuffs nowadays. Hybrid engineers with knowledge in electronics, mechanics and programming are favoured.

Electric vehicles are not recent inventions at all. The first one was built in 1829!! It was abandoned due to its impracticality at the time. Good write up but you need to dig more so as not to misinform.

Autonomous cars though invented haven't really got the infrastructure to support them and still very much at its infancy.

With accidents involved when tested (google made some), there are still concerns over safety but they would be resolved with time.

Fact is the automotive industry is moving away from making cars for people's ownership to making cars for usership.

Think smart cities with smart vehicles where everything is interconnected, from traffic lights to cars communicating with each other without human intervention.

The problem now is how the car industry can monetise this new way of people using cars. We already have cars that you can start just using your phone and more tech are being developed. How do the manufacturers recoup their investment in the research and development necessary to keep pace with technological advancement?
