A bus reported to be carrying tourists, including many from Germany, crashed on the island of Madeira in Portugal, killing a minimum of 28.

Filipe Sousa, the mayor of Santa Cruz, said that 17 women and 11 men were killed in Wednesday’s mishap.

A number of others were injured after the car overturned near the town of Canico.


The reason for the crash, which took place in daytime in the early night, was not immediately clear.

Images on Portuguese media showed a reversed white bus surrounded by firefighters. SIC tv stated there were 19 ambulances at the scene.

“I have no words to describe what took place. I can not deal with the suffering of these individuals,” Sousa informed SIC tv.

Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he would take a trip to Madeira overnight.
