Don't remove his northern link because you desperately want to claim he is Igbo who killed northern leaders. undecided

The name of his Yoruba accomplice Major Ademoyega was omitted conspicuously in this report cool

Leave awolowo and gowon and focus on your present useless leaders ruining the country.

I don't understand why you people like to focus on nonsense. Awolowo wet don die since.

Go and focus on your politicians (President, governors, senators, ministers, commissioners etc) go and tackle them and make sure they do their job and account for all the money they have been collecting. Stop bringing up useless irrelevant old stories. They won't help you in anyway.

Nairaland be turning into a tribal war zone every day.

How many people here know that the vice presidents wife is a granddaughter to Awolowo?

Instead of using every news to educate yourself on why certain things are still not changing in the Nigerian government, many are here fighting and insulting themselves over meaningless things and trying to prove one stupid knowledge or the other.

When many of you start looking more into the positive part of things you see the better it will be for you.

Go to Delta and Edo state and see the impact of free education endures till today
under UPN Bendel State Uniersity and LASU were built

Did Awolowo give free education to delta state people?

Look at Murtala Mohammed looking on. It may be difficult for some to believe that shortly before this picture was taken, this evil man called Murtala Mohammed orchestrated a coup, not only to kill many of his comrades from the Eastern part of the country, but also to pull the North out of Nigeria

Some Nigerians like to think bad of Ojukwu for breaking up the country, they dont know that this genocidal killer called Murtala Mohammed actually planned to break up Nigeria long before Ojukwu did. Murtaka initially demanded the secession of Northern Nigeria from Nigeria. It was only after the British envoys in Nigeria held a meeting with Murtala and his fellow Northern coup plotters and told them that Northern Nigeria was not economically viable and that Eastern Nigeria had huge reserves of Oil and Gas did their tune change from "Araba" (separate!) to "one Nigeria!". They now hurriedly chose Gowon because he was the highest ranking Northerner in the Nigerian Army at the time.

Murtala would go on to lead the second division of the Nigerian Army to commit war crimes such as the Asaba massacre and the summary execution of Biafran prisoners of war

Today, despite Murtala Mohammed being a coup plotter, war criminal and a genocidal killer, Nigeria still honoured the man on their currency and major landmarks such as roads and Airports

That's Nigeria for you
ibos will never change and this is what will send the tribe to wilderness. You will never see them blame their leaders who messed up but quick to blame other. Yes muritala Muhammed bleeped up but put this in your brain that ibos strike the first coup in Nigeria. Have ibos ever blame this on themselves. The ibos first coup brought Nigeria democracy backward but you will never see ibos blaming their leaders except blaming other tribe for their mistakes. It is until ibos start blaming themselves for their own problem b4 they can achieve wht they are fighting for.

After independence , I think Awolowo had less relevance in Nigerian politics .

He was no doubt instrumental in the actualisation of an independent Nigeria but the moment Akintola kicked him out, he became a mere 2 or three time presidential aspirant who kept loosing before he went into retirement.

You are so wrong if you imagine that way because as we speak, the Awolowos are still instrumental to power in Nigeria.
Do you know how Osibanjo became VP, I guess not. His wife is a granddaughter of Awolowo if you don't know.
He was just picked randomly, there was a reason and that is because of the Awolowo.

Lt. Col Murtala Muhammed, Lt. Col Yakubu Gowon (new Head of State), and Obafemi Awolowo after Gowon's regime released Awolowo from Calabar Prison in August 1966.

Background: Obafemi Awolowo was convicted for treason and jailed (in 1964) for conspiring with the Kwame Nkrumah government to overthrow the Nigerian government under Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa.

On January 15, 1966 some young officers fronted by Maj. Patrick Chukwuma Nzeogwu cut the head of PM Balewa's government figuratively in that Balewa and other regional Premiers (except Michael Oparah, the Eastern Premier and Dennis Osadebay, Mid Western Premier) were murdered in the violent coup.

Nzeogwu's coup was immediately put down by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army, Maj-Gen JTU Ironsi, who then seized control of the Nigerian government.

Many young northern officers felt some type of way that mostly northern politicians and officers were killed in the January coup by the officers who took out Balewa's government, so these northern officers retaliated in July 1966 brutally taking out Maj-Gen Ironsi. Many Igbo officers and NCOs were also massacred by mutineering NCOs from the north across Nigeria in July 1966. The roving spirit and mastermind of the July Coup was Murtala Muhammed. Muhammed and his co-conspirators were prepared to cut off northern Nigeria from the Nigerian federation and were dissuaded by more mature minds and diplomats. Muhammed and his conspirators agreed to have Col. Yakubu Gowon as the new Head of State so Murtala Muhammed was always lurking over Gowon's shoulders and this picture is poetic in that regard.

Almost 10 years after this picture was taken, Gowon was overthrown (i.e. July 1975) and Murtala served for a short time as Nigeria's Head of State before he was assassinated in February 1976 by conspirators led by another participant in the July 1966 coup - Buka Suka Dimka.

So went the interesting "Game of Thrones" Nigeria military style. In fact the Class of July 1966 (TY Danjuma, Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida Joseph Garba, John Shagaya, Gado Nasko, Sanni Abacha et al) would go on to dominate Nigerian politics for many decades.

I think it was the murder of Tafawa Balewa that made the north the serial coup plotters the world have ever known.

That's Nigeria for you
Ojukwu did no wrong for wanting to secede. His only crime was going ahead with the war when he knew deep down he couldn't sustain his soldiers and his people. The war should have ended long before it did but he was more focused on winning than the people's welfare.

The Murtala part is twisted. Prior to his involvement in the military, the North had wanted out of the British Colony in 1953 because it felt cheated, owing to the majority of its people being uneducated and as such, 'cheated' out of the leadership system of the Colony.

The late Nnamdi Azikiwe read the 'riot act' before his party, the NCNC, in Lagos and hinted that the possibility of a civil war would likely play out should the North secede.
https://www.blackpast.org/major_speeches/1953-nnamdi-azikiwe-speech-secession/

The North, out of fear, dropped their secession idea and forced the Elites to a deal which would later profit them for years to come, up till this day.
But guess what happened 14 years after Azikiwe read the act in Lagos? Ojukwu led the charge to break away from Nigeria.

The one sided coup which saw the deaths of Northern elites while a handful of Eastern politicians were either placed on house arrest or shielded sparked reprisals in the Northern camp. The coup in itself would have been laid to rest, but the mocking of Northern leaders, with posters of their deaths being released, detailing how they were killed changed everything. It went on to lead to the pogrom before the war.

Now see this interesting timeline:

1. The North wanted out in 1953
2. Oil was discovered in 1956 and Nigeria joined the ranks of oil producing states in 1958.
3. The Civil War started in 1967, July. Most states under present day south south were regarded as the Eastern Region, save for Delta and Edo which were part of the Mid Western region.

It was all about protecting what mattered in the end. Before the emergence of Murtala, the North had always wanted out.
