One thing I have come to know is that Nairaland owner and MOD are very pretentious. You push a tread of this nature to the front page, stand back and pretend you don't support tribalism as long as it supports your interest but when it goes against your interest you pretend to ban.

You seem to forget the power of internet and propaganda. Everyone can get sentimental and defend his interest but a big shame to the MOD. If you encourage tribalistic treads then you have no right to ban anyone that goes full tribalistic. In this social media age propaganda against any tribe will not hold, it'll be countered but Nigeria as a nation will suffer for it.

He was no doubt instrumental in the actualisation of an independent Nigeria but the moment Akintola kicked him out, he became a mere 2 or three time presidential aspirant who kept loosing before he went into retirement.

ibos will never change and this is what will send the tribe to wilderness. You will never see them blame their leaders who messed up but quick to blame other. Yes muritala Muhammed bleeped up but put this in your brain that ibos strike the first coup in Nigeria. Have ibos ever blame this on themselves. The ibos first coup brought Nigeria democracy backward but you will never see ibos blaming their leaders except blaming other tribe for their mistakes. It is until ibos start blaming themselves for their own problem b4 they can achieve wht they are fighting for.
It wasn't an Igbo coup. It was a Nigerian coup. You can say all you want about how wrong it is for the military to kill civilians but Nzeogwu was a nationalist.

The ultimate test of a leader is the effect on his people. 60 years after he left power people are still talking about Awolowo's achievements. Gowon made him defacto vice president, leaders from other regions are still pointing to his acheivements. The way to answer these people is to ask them what is Ojukwu's legacy, what is kanu's legacy, which school did he build, which hospital did he build. tell them to point to the man whose life is better because Ojukwu was their leader. We in the west (including my father ) will point to millions who became engineers, lawyers, doctors etc because of Awolowo. We will point to Cocoa house, our road network, stadium, 1st televison in Africa, and so many 1sts etc etc etc etc because of Awo. This matter is simple, just tell them to point to what these leaders did for them. Calling someone coward or hero may make you feel good but name calling doesnt pay school fees, educate, lift people out of poverty or provide healthcare and roads.

One man they say is a hero but millions of his people died and suffered pyschological damage yet his own family and future generations are ok. Another man they say was a coward but none of his people died and millions got educated and lifted out of poverty. It's not rocket science!!!

Look at Murtala Mohammed looking on. It may be difficult for some to believe that shortly before this picture was taken, this evil man called Murtala Mohammed orchestrated a coup, not only to kill many of his comrades from the Eastern part of the country, but also to pull the North out of Nigeria

Some Nigerians like to think bad of Ojukwu for breaking up the country, they dont know that this genocidal killer called Murtala Mohammed actually planned to break up Nigeria long before Ojukwu did. Murtaka initially demanded the secession of Northern Nigeria from Nigeria. It was only after the British envoys in Nigeria held a meeting with Murtala and his fellow Northern coup plotters and told them that Northern Nigeria was not economically viable and that Eastern Nigeria had huge reserves of Oil and Gas did their tune change from "Araba" (separate!) to "one Nigeria!". They now hurriedly chose Gowon because he was the highest ranking Northerner in the Nigerian Army at the time.

Murtala would go on to lead the second division of the Nigerian Army to commit war crimes such as the Asaba massacre and the summary execution of Biafran prisoners of war

Today, despite Murtala Mohammed being a coup plotter, war criminal and a genocidal killer, Nigeria still honoured the man on their currency and major landmarks such as roads and Airports

That's Nigeria for you
Oga stop posting misleading info
Ojukwu started d division of Nigeria not murtala mohammed abeg!

Now i see what your attack on awolowo was all about. Ojukwu deceitful act of creating biafra started the bloodshed in 1966. Something kanu is doing, leading innocent people to death.

I agree with you brother!!! He was also a greedy thief who wanted all for himself. Lowkey he was power hungry hiding under the umbrella of liberation. He was convicted of corruption then and sentenced to jail not to talk of his crime against the people of biafra as minister of fiance under gowon. Lt. Col Murtala Muhammed, Lt. Col Yakubu Gowon (new Head of State), and Obafemi Awolowo after Gowon's regime released Awolowo from Calabar Prison in August 1966.

Background: Obafemi Awolowo was convicted for treason and jailed (in 1964) for conspiring with the Kwame Nkrumah government to overthrow the Nigerian government under Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa.

On January 15, 1966 some young officers fronted by Maj. Patrick Chukwuma Nzeogwu cut the head of PM Balewa's government figuratively in that Balewa and other regional Premiers (except Michael Oparah, the Eastern Premier and Dennis Osadebay, Mid Western Premier) were murdered in the violent coup.

Nzeogwu's coup was immediately put down by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army, Maj-Gen JTU Ironsi, who then seized control of the Nigerian government.

Many young northern officers felt some type of way that mostly northern politicians and officers were killed in the January coup by the officers who took out Balewa's government, so these northern officers retaliated in July 1966 brutally taking out Maj-Gen Ironsi. Many Igbo officers and NCOs were also massacred by mutineering NCOs from the north across Nigeria in July 1966. The roving spirit and mastermind of the July Coup was Murtala Muhammed. Muhammed and his co-conspirators were prepared to cut off northern Nigeria from the Nigerian federation and were dissuaded by more mature minds and diplomats. Muhammed and his conspirators agreed to have Col. Yakubu Gowon as the new Head of State so Murtala Muhammed was always lurking over Gowon's shoulders and this picture is poetic in that regard.

Almost 10 years after this picture was taken, Gowon was overthrown (i.e. July 1975) and Murtala served for a short time as Nigeria's Head of State before he was assassinated in February 1976 by conspirators led by another participant in the July 1966 coup - Buka Suka Dimka.

So went the interesting "Game of Thrones" Nigeria military style. In fact the Class of July 1966 (TY Danjuma, Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida Joseph Garba, John Shagaya, Gado Nasko, Sanni Abacha et al) would go on to dominate Nigerian politics for many decades.

Even if it's established that Awolowo died by suicide for what is being mouthed around, it will only increase my admiration and esteem of him.

It takes a man of dignity to do that as a leader. It's a world above a leader that runs in the face of heat and worse still, leaving his followers in jeopardy.
