For the sake of this study, we contextually defined politics as "Political maneuvers or diplomacy between people, groups, or organizations, especially involving power, influence or conflict."
When Achebe scribbled Arrow of God, he only knew little that he was depicting the deeds of a post independent Nigeria and Africa at large. To him, he was remediating and or salvaging a denigrated and relegated agelong culture. Since the white man has suffused African culture with his...so that the colouration becomes a superimposition, he (Achebe) takes upon himself the onus to preach, and extol the viscosity of the aesthetics of African culture. Back to the thrust of this micro essay. By virtue of the political system of Umuaro, Ezeulu is the highest custodian of the tradition. This translates to the fact that he is the highest priest of the land. Since the Igbo tradition operates without a king, any consensual priest of the land wills hegemony over other priets of the land. Ezeulu is the priest of Ulu, the highest deity, so he operates with regal power. Obasanjo's political inclination on the one hand, has been tremendously trademarked by series of unparalleled successive success, judging from the angle that he has ruled Nigeria twice and since he stepped aside as president, he has been very instrumental in deciding who rules the country. Umaru Musa Yar Adua won as president of Nigeria, Jonathan won and was succeeded by Buhari. With Obasanjo's inclinations in politics, he was able to select the above listed candidates as president... therefore when it comes to politics in Nigeria, Olu Obasanjo is a Chameleon.
In Arrow of God, Ezeulu foresees the future of the church and in order to maintain his political relevance, sends his son Oduche there. Having got the inkling that the religion of the church might outlive his religious fate, he acts forthwith. Albeit this singular act of his attracts lots of criticism from his scores of rivals, he never cares a rap, for he has with his political eyes seen the future. This explains why he did nothing to spank Oduche when he (Oduche) caged and almost killed the sacred python. Olusegun Obasanjo while supporting Atiku Abubaka, tactfully advises his son to support Mahammadu Buhari so that he will not be sent to jail if Buhari wins. At least Buhari who has already applauded his (Obasanjo's) son for his sheer bravado, will do him a favour not to send his father to jail. If Atiku wins then Obansanjo will maintain his political relevance in the politics of the country.
