Electric cars would reduce demand for fossil fuels like petrol and diesel thereby driving the price down. If the dependency on fossil fuels drop, the price will drop too.

It will also increase the need for more electricity and will force the government to either step up PHCN services or allow private firms come into the power industry.
If private firms take over the power sector, the competition will lead to improved power supply & reduced electricity tariffs (just like how MTN & Glo knocked out the likes of Nitel, Econet etc).

Improved electricity supply leads to business boom as we all know that SMEs have always cited inadequate electricity supply as a major problem hindering growth since it takes a huge chunk of their capital.

Higher output by SMEs leads to an overall boost for the economy as SMEs account for about 48% of Nigeria's GDP.
It also leads to the creation of more jobs, better income distribution, reduced air pollution, etc. I could go on & on...

It is a win-win for everybody involved.

What the hell are you on about?
The world is moving away from fossil fuels but you zombies think we should move towards it.
Must you zombies blindly support anything that you are asked to support without critically looking at it?

Many of our gadgets today are powered by electricity from our phones to our laptops. How come electricity has not improved?

We don't even need to be talking about electric cars now when we have not been able to manage our electricity crisis for decades.

And the funniest (most stupid) thing about Ben Bruce's argument is the mention of Norway?

So, because a relatively advanced nation like Norway is contemplating electric cars, we too should be talking about it? This is a case of a rat going swimming with a lizard. The lizard would definitely not catch a cold, but the rat would because of the hair on its body.

There is no wisdom in pushing the worthless bill.

However, there is also something wrong with the reason for rejecting the bill. The bill should not have been rejected on the excuse that we are an oil producing state. Rather it should have been rejected on the basis that it is not anywhere near our most pressing issues.

It is not surprising the mixed reactions to this post.
In a classroom, you find the smart and not so smart. Nairaland represents this analogy.

Senator Ben Bruce's electric car bill is outright laughable.
He might as well introduce a bill for Nigerians to relocate to the moon.
That shows he does not have a good grip of Nigeria's basic problems and how to prioritise them.
Since he has received enough bashing already, I am discharging him quickly in his write up.

My dismay is mostly at those who defend the senator, saying the bill is a good thing.
These are people who, if and when given the opportunity to make decisions for us, will run the country to a halt.
Because they lack the capacity for logical reasoning.

Electric vehicle don't come cheap; they are delicate and need to be charged with regular electricity.
Where is the road on which the electric car will run?
If it is the road we have now, then get ready to pick up the batteries along the roads as potholes knock them off the vehicles.

No need repeating the basic problems we need to solve before electric vehicles.
Our electricity generation is a mess; boreholes have replaced public water supply, and unemployment is everywhere.
Workers are owed several months of salary, etc, etc.

Even developed countries that use electric vehicles have not banned cars that use fossil fuel.

Those who represent us at the national assemblies should endeavour to read and research the issues affecting the people they represent.
This is how it is done elsewhere. Abuja is not for them to go and relax and live big, read the papers and entertain visitors.
Not many members of the national assembly can boast of a good grasp of the political, economic, environmental, and other ramification of a bill on lives of most Nigerians.

I hope others will learn from the senator's blunder.

So u feel like uv made a valid point... Ur a very big olodo... U cudnt even understnd the bill before vomiting ur rubbish here...

I do get the senator's usual misplaced priority and illogical rants about electric cars, but you took it a step further to in on breath on the side of the twitter senator about electric cars, but in another breath highlighted the senators' illogical, irrational and misplaces priorities.

1. Electric cars at this stage are the least of our priorities, it sounds good and practical in advanced environments where stable electricity is not a problem.

2. Right now, Nigerians don't have enough power for basics like cooling water to drink or cool their hot like oven homes baking under the sun and you and this man think to flood our roads with electric cars that you can not charge is our most pressing priority. Where is the sense in this illogical logic?

3. Shouldn't this man's main concern and daily rants at the moment be stable electricity and how to get attain uninterrupted power supply? He's been a public official for a decade and a senator for over 4 years so the question where are the stable power supply solutions and ideas proffered by this federal senator on the floor of the Senate? Or the electric cars he keeps ranting about his power supply solutions?

4. This particular senator was part of the administration that privatized electricity generation in Nigeria and sold our power infrastructures to their conies with little or no power generation and management expertise, no funds to invest and grow their power business.

5. We are tied down to the bad and seriously flawed privatization deal this senator and his cronies put in place, the power companies cannot perform because they don't know anything about the power business the government handed over to them, they are powerful and the banks won't lend them money to invest and expand because banks don't trust them.

6. So, what's the solution? Tearing up the contract that gave them our power infrastructure is not a good idea either because it's bad for business and investor confidence.

This clueless senator sometimes spews rubbish like a little kid with little or no common sense, he sounds naive, too basic, too shallow and elementary.

We need leaders with good vision, solutions and bright ideas, not lazy thinking public officials sitting on the internet spewing less than half baked ideas everyday.

Ben Bruce have a valid point, and soon Nigeria will run out of oil
it would be more expensive than fuel, thumbs down for that bill

My response:

I could see that you are a juvenile who does not even have responsibilities much more problem solving acumen.
Did you see how the senate described the bill? "Irrelevant," that is if you understand the meaning.

Do you even have an idea what an electric vehicle is and the requirements for its operation?
Ever heard of charging points for electric vehicles found in public places in countris that have them.
With the power situation now, do you think Nigeria can provide them even in 2040?

Over 95% of people are angry with bill regardless of intended date.
Why am I wasting time lecturing you as you will not comprehend.

Twitter senator and twitter lamentations grin

Over the years, I have come to realise that the root of the problem with this country can be found in many of our homes. There is a high likelihood that the problems faced by a typical Nigerian family is bigger than what an entire country outside Nigeria has to face in years...and the reason is just...Selfishness (lack of consideration for other people)... This is probably why we are where we are today.

The tweeting senator, being an online advocate of Common sense should know better that of all bills, his electric "billshit" should come last cos until we get some things right, this bill will do little or nothing to help solve our problems. Only God knows what he has to gain from it for him to be crying like a child whose candy-bar has been snatched...

I can say it with all I have got that this cross-breed does not mean well for this country like he does for his business.

Well, I don't support calling another human being a cross-breed but I agree with you 100% speaking of his misplaced priority.

Where is his Bill about drastically reducing public office entitlement starting from the Senate? All those nice things he used to talk about then. Sense is definitely not common even for the Common Sense senator. Electric cars! In which roads, under what conditions. These people are cuckoco! cheesy

It is kind of ridiculous to be clamoring for electric cars, moving away from fossil fuels in an oil producing nation. Remember it's our one and only primary source of revenue. Simply put, it's bad for business. Don't you agree? Who are you going to be selling it to even when you don't think it's good enough.

Nigerians typically lack foresight, especially the ones in power. We prefer to live in the past and present, without second thoughts to the future. No wahala, na all of us dey the country together.

Charge your car for free? Who is going to build and pay for the charging stations and electric car infrastructure all over Nigeria? Tesla is spending over $36 billion to expand its electric car infrastructure, more money than your national budget.

Come up with your own sensible, practical and original thinking instead of cosigning a useless and lazy idea from a thoughtless public official.

I knew that corrupt Nigerian senators who are bankrolled by corrupt oil marketers would block this bill!

For now, Bruce should work on making electricity available first.

You don try. You've made a point. But forgive me to say you are myopic and you have very little knowledge of eletric cars and their disadvantages. What you really need to realize is Nigeria cannot be ripe for electric cars by 2035. There are already electric cars in Nigeria but only people that can afford it are buying it. Forcing everybody to buy it is very unreasonable and unrealistic. That man is selfish and unreasonable.
