If I earned 1M monthly in Nigeria, I go nowhere. People do not tend to understand the mirage living abroad actually is. Lots of us say "we're doing it for our kids", fine. It's a good thing to want to take your kids somewhere with equal opportunities but for you earning 1M in a month, what else is it you want? You're leaving that to go to a place where debt is easily acquired? You're leaving a place where you built a house within a few years of you getting a 1M paying job to go to a place where you have to pay for a house for the rest of your life? With house rent out of the equation, imagine the kinda extra savings that comes out of 1M every month. If you earn the equivalent of 1M monthly in Canada, there's next to nothing left after paying all your bills, that way you need to keep going for the next and subsequent months. Even Canadians are tired of their system, I met one yesterday who just found out he could rent a duplex for one year in Medellin, Columbia for the price it would cost to rent same duplex for just a month in Canada. He only comes back now to cater to his properties and he's gone. Give me a job of 1M and I'm back to naija. O course I know of the insecurities, lack of basic amenities and all that, that's why it is a good ideal to send your kids out but if it were me, I'd keep such a job.

He just got to Canada and is still carried away by the beautiful environment. In about 2 to 3 years, the reality of what he has done will hit him straight on. At the end of the day, it's not about the amount of income you're making (in Dollars or Naira) or the beauty of the environment you find yourself in but instead the amount of your income you're able to keep after all expenses are taken care of. Just like other Canadians, he might end up living from paycheck to paycheck and paying the unending cycle of enormous bills. Welcome to Obodo Oyibo.

my brother, so what is the essence of life....is not about living good life to its potential... have heard this argument offline back and forth...no doubt, the serene environment, health care services, welfare system, security all came at a cost. But to be honest nobody can win this argument, if he had stayed back, his life is not guaranteed... he'll live in fear all through his life amidst insecurity starring at him. Going over there also, you work to live rather than live to work...but I still believe he took the right decision because no empirical indices as I type shows that Nigeria will be better in the next 50years....

Congratulations on being “better off”.
Even in Venezuela there are people in Caracas that are better off. It doesn’t mean that 3 million people haven’t fled to Colombia, Brazil and as far as the US because, in part, of the hardship brought by the US colonialist sanctions and the economic mismanagement of Maduro’s socialist government.

Same with Nigeria. There would be the few enriched from the current regime’s statist policies and perhaps connections; it cannot and does not stoop the rising poverty numbers. You sound lettered. It’s fair to say that you know this.

I cannot argue for a long time with you. A lot of people are better off.

It is the perspective from which you want to see the economy based on your tribal or political affiliation. Many of my friends ran of of Nigeria in 2008-2013.

Nothing in Europe anymore. I always look at Nigerians traveling to Europe as some of the most brainwashed folks. It is even better to remain in your village than travel to Europe. Europe has nothing to offer, an economy that grows less than 1%. Nigeria GDP in terms of purchasing parity is even higher than most europen countries. Europe is a scam only for the blind and desperate folks who fails to see all the success stories around them in Nigeria

Bro....abeg...are there no jobs in Europe ní...a returnee once affirmed to this assertions of yours. but what is your take about Germany?

How many staff do you have in banks for instance? Branches have between 10 to 20 staff. How many branches do you have in Lagos alone. Not to talk of the head office with different units. 100 is not much.

Bro, he's definitely not going to be doing any top paying job for years to come. Where does he want to see that 4k after tax? He wan steal am? The jobs that'll pay him such cash are probably dentistry & maybe medicine & it's not even easy to be a licensed foreign dental/medical graduate in Canada!
It's even more difficult than the US. He con even get a whole family wey him carry follow emigrate which means triple

He will probably never buy a house in Canada. In Nigeria, with 1m a month & beta planning, in a few years, you go build very quality house.
Anyways, na him know.

Please stop saying what you do not know. Stop spreading false information. Do you even know how much minimum wage is in Canada? Do you know what city he lives in?

The numbers from the poverty indices, for example, are without tribal or political affiliation. They are what they are- rising poverty numbers at astronomical levels. 33.1% as Nigeria firmly sits as the poverty capital of the world. Unless someone hates these human beings and hates Nigeria, I do not think it is wrong at least acknowledging these numbers and the frightening consequences.

Healthcare is only free for non-prescription drugs. E.g. Pain relievers and vitamins and very little else. Please Nigerians should do their research...

Lie, healthcare also covers surgery, hospital admission costs to general wards. I have benefited from all these.

Different strokes for different folks. Canada is cool but the winter no be here.
In Nigeria, all issues the author wrote can be addressed if he really has the sacks load of cash he making.
For example, he could have signed up for armed security (army/policemen), buy a bullet proof vehicle, live in a gated estate where you won't have funny looking guys as neighbors, there are insurance plans you can sign up with for medical evacuation overseas of you and your family. There is almost no first world country without an residency plan that cannot be bought with money Canada, US, UK and so on, there are also countries you can buy their passports legitimately. So he could have gotten an entrepreneur visa for he and his family. Ship they off to the country of his choice and still keep his job. Thereafter, take an extended leave and see how the country is...cos the grass is not always green on the other side particularly if you have a job that pays serious money.

Nigeria might be a shit hole but it is much bearable if you have loads to cash.

I love this angle you are looking at. I think this is the best option for someone with money as the author claimed.
Thanks for this educative contribution.

I know the firm and it's located in VI. She recruits annually during her graduate program (circa 100 each year) ditto usual regular intakes as experienced staff. She has a high turnover and most people actually use the firm as a stepping stone to relocate as she is a MNC respected globally.

The 100 must have been over the years and trust me, senior management complain about it a lot. The deal is: get recruited by the firm, work for 2-3 years and relocate to Canada.

The yardstick for measuring poverty rate was increased from 1 dollars to 1.90dollars in October 2015.

If one dollars was still used, the poverty rate would be better than what it was in 2014/2015

I saw this on google: The average Software Engineer salary in Canada is $90,000 per year or $46.15 per hour. Entry level positions start at $48,750 per year while most experienced workers make up to $153,000 per year.
.................
$140,000
The average Lawyer salary in Canada is $140,000 per year or $71.79 per hour. Entry level positions start at $55,000 per year while most experienced workers make up to $150,000 per year.
................

The above from google. I have some friends there who were skilled professionals (some bank managers or higher)here and they tell me nothing can make them return.
