First and foremost, fighting corruption does not detter investors. There is no data that supports that assertion. If I may add, FDI had increased post 2019. Any "investor" that cannot come until we "stop fighting corruption" is not an investor

2. Equating the supposed state of Nigeria as a reason not to implement an already existing law is tantamount to leaving in denial.

3. Saraki still has cases to answer. He made his money selling what? Let's not get emotional, else I'll ask you to tell that the families of those who lost their monies in SGB. But that said, the point here is that the laws says unexplained assets be explained or forfeited, what is wrong in that?

Indeed we are becoming emotional when we begin to infer from where Saraki made his money from. I doubt that we are wiser than the court from the CCB up to the supreme court. Saraki showed evidence of constant financial remittances from sales of rice and sugar. Whether it's true or not is left for the court to decide. They decided and said it's true.

We are not here to be judge's over the moral standing of anybody. If we were to do that then all of them from the various presidents to the least LG chairman are all criminals!

Excellent point you mentioned that dealing with corruption does not deter investors. I must note, however, that the VP clearly stated that the FG could confiscate your properties without any corruption allegation tied to you. While this is true, the outside world looks on and are not blind to what's happening in Nigeria. How does a Saraki, whom the supreme court acquitted, get to have same properties that were subject to investigation seized on flimsy grounds, while the Gandujes and Amaechis, and Tinubus, and Kyaris, and Babangidas, and Jonathans, and Obasanjos go Scot free?

The outside world simply knows that any day someone in government isn't happy with you they can easily confiscate your properties, and even when you go to court and win, the FG can hold onto said properties without having to explain to anybody.

We can hate Saraki all we want, but Magu and his EFCC are confused.

Don't know why everyone above me are insulting the lawyers...It may be unfair but it is correct..Same thing in USA...  The government can take your money on suspicion without ever filing a criminal complaint, it is left for you to prove how you got the money. People always assume it is government that is meant to prove you got it illegally..
God bless u for ur unbiased reasoning!
The real sad thing is that most of the ppl commenting are ppl still looking for their bearing in life!/
How do one explain a level 12 civil servant with less than 200k salary yet he has an estate with a 20 million naira garage! Haaa!!!
The APC led govt is right on this one! Such properties should be siezed and if u hv proof of its legitimate earnings, bring it foward and it would be released! Shikena!
The onus of proof should fall on the accused and not the accuser!

Eg. a real life scenario; u kept 10 million in a room and u gv 5 ppl the keys to the room, 2 are secondary school orphans with pocket money of 2k, 2 are undergraduates with pocket money of 20k and d last is a worker earning 100k.
If the money goes missing and u see the secondary school orphan using an iphone x. Would u go searching for proof that he stole ur money or u would arrest him let him prove how he got the iphone x?

It's just common sense! Ppl sef!!!

PS; For posterity sakes, they law should be applied to everyone! From Atiku to Tinubu, Apkabio to T A Orji, Amaechi to Ibori, Oshomole to Kwankwaso etc!!!

That means you don't understand what this statement means. Check the following examples

1. You are a university student, your father is a civil servant or modest jobs, your mother is a petty trader, yet you drive flashy cars around and live in posh apartment.
2. Your total income (from the day you started working to date) according to ALL RECORDS is XNaira, Yet you have a house worth X^5 Dollars.
3. You are a Civil Servant or Appointed politician. You are expected to declare your assets. Some other properties (not declared) were found or linked to you.
4. A random Rolls-Roys, Porshe or Ferari and the likes was cruising on Lekki expressway or Maitama. Police ran the number plates on the computer and discovered a random guy with no defined means of livelihood.

All these are much more can be seized. The position of the law states that they will be seized until you can explain how you came about them. That is what Osinbajo means. Do you need the law that backs it up? read below

What if you are the wife of a president who could not afford 20 million to buy his party's nomination form but you are wearing a wrist watch of 45 million and carrying a hand bag of 15 million. Now the son of this same president smashes a power bike that is worth 55 million . How can you explain that? Can these people explain the source of all that wealth?

@Rolams,

You just sounded like someone whose only "evidence" to a claim of ownership of a parcel of land is that his father "was buried on the land". I beg of you, if you have any "hard-earned" properties, make you put all record in order and in safe-keeping, so that if "big-brother" comes, you take them do "yanga"

Abi na. Anyhow he be ooo!

1. The Wife and Son of the president are not covered by immunity. The law says they can be called to explain the source of their wealth.

2. Meanwhile, do you know the wife of the president had been an entreprenuer and the Managing Director of her businesses before the husband became president. I guess if she's requested to prove the source of her wealth, she can show through the business and financial records of her businesses. As for her son, if he can show proof that he's a dependant and his mother bought it for him (for example), then he should have no problem.

We can hate Saraki all we want, but Magu and his EFCC are confused.

1. You introduced Saraki, not me. You are the one making a case for him where he is not the central focus. I asked you not to get emotional, because Saraki+rice+sugar+whatever is not relevant in the validity of this law. The interpretation of this law to mean scaring away investors is what I find ridiculous.
2. The focus of this topic is on the position of the law wrt unexplained assets and wealth. The law is good and will help the society. A law is a law. It is not invalid because it "favours" a Tinubu and not a Saraki. This is a law set out to prevent, deter and punish criminal acqusition of wealth and properties. That is what it is
3. You refer to the outside world. In "The Outside World"(US & Europe), unexplained wealth laws are in full force. The outside world had been watching us from time immemorial; they've seen and are appalled at how our citizens acquired unexplained wealth, bring it into their countries, buying luxury properties and Yatches, Jets etc. For example, the UK is currently probing a 15m Euros undeclared property linked to Saraki.. ask yourself, why should someone have a property that the he or she cannot explain the source?
