Many Igbo fathers of pretty and regular but educated girls and villagers go hear am oh. Akwa Ibom too and similar cultures that sell their daughters by exploiting grooms will never accept it ra ra... Most other tribes won't be affected because pride price has always been a symbolic thing rather expensive list of outrageous demands. 3 Likes |

@OP: Before dowry was abolished in Britain, wives gave their husbands yet they were maltreated. In India, wives still pay dowries yet their husbands treat them like crap. @cancelation: it was symbolic and part of the rites of marriage and building up another family with the husband as the head. 1 Like |

Paying of bride does not potentially put the woman in marriage in a precarious position rather it gives a sense of pride and value. Imagine marrying a woman for free The whites you're trying to copy, how's successful are their marriages? Their marriages are extremely poor with over 60% failed marriages. Surely that shouldn't be a standard to copy. Poco, Not reacting to your comment just quoting you cos it's been long pocohantas: 2 Likes |

Yes, it should be abolished. People can still get married, witnessed by everyone in their village and they should feed their guests and everybody goes home. Some cultures return the bride price. All that yam, honey and what not should also go away with the bride price. 3 Likes |

arthurmate: I don't think bride price is the reason why they are not yet married. I think it's their character or beauty or something else. A man can go any length to marry someone he sees as a wife material. Again, if he can afford to feed her, he can just easily meet the family of the girl and explain his condition to them, the marriage process will be made easy for him. At least, that's how they do it in the north. So, I don't think it is the bride price issue, I think they are not good for |

Talking about bride price, some communities does not collect the so called bride price but you have a long list of items to buy, at the end of the day, you are the one who will entertain your visitors on the day of traditional marriage which will take place in the family home of the bride which most time makes the marriage exorbitant. Looking at the whole arrangement, you will see that, marriage and process of marrying in Africa should be revisited and redefined. The truth remains that the man will always be the head of the union whether their is price or not. All I will suggest is that the cost of marriage should be brought down to the barest minimum where everyone who wants to marry can do so conveniently. In that case, it will be a win win situation for all. Even in Europe and America where there is nothing like bride price, the man is still the head of the union but respects his wife. Remember also, that these countries have laws that protects the woman from being cheated or molested. 2 Likes |

I totally support its abolishment. Some greedy parents have turned there in laws to ATMs. They did same to me, but them go meet me for front. I love my wife, wouldn't do anything we didn't consent to though. 3 Likes |
