I am not against being punished for infractions but the punishment should fit the crime.
Sending people to our overcrowded jail over minor traffic offenses is insane and no civilized country will enact such laws.

Nigeria is not civilized

It's a septic pit of dung

So why waste your energy bro?

The simps won't understand

That's why they seat back and watch a few old men loot them dey

This is what I am saying, every states, countries, localities have their traffic rules and regulations. Once you know your state has crazy law on traffic, do everything to avoid being caught. You know that LASG will seize your car if you drive against traffic then, dont do it... its as simple as ABC
Forfeiting the car make no sense, they should simply place a heavy fine or community service,we are not in autocratic government
It’s not done anywhere

I don’t support one way driving etc but forfeiting offender vehicle is going too far. Something tells me danfo and other rickety vehicles won’t face the wahala only luxury cars, it’ll be turned into a sick business

I guess Lagos state government wants to thief people cars. In a country where is no stable light talk less of
at traffic points, wants people forfeit their cars because of minor offenses like this. Is there any other place in the world where motorists
forfeit their cars because of traffic offenses ?. what happened to one to three months imprisonment. Nonsense shithole
country.

Even when you have the law that tells you the gravity of the offence you are breaking and its punishment? Why do we have laws then if we can't obey them?

How about military men, politicians et al??

Are they above the traffic law they break constantly undecided

Oga in civilized climes the government plays its roles before putting up stiff penalties for offenders. Wait until you have an emergency then you will understand why people break traffic laws in these parts. Mobile phone, IT, regulators etc are all gone to sleep, electronic fund transfers, atms etc hardly work satisfactorily, the roads are bad, how many have access to proper health care and services, where an ambulance can be called while you are far away at work to transport an emergency situation at home, even the transport system is way below standards, where are the alternate road being constructed? One could go on and on! My take is the only way the government can justify stiff penalties, is to do the right thing, create the environment for citizens to obey laws by providing the needful! Period!

in poverty-ridden nation? 5 days of community services like clearing debris in gutter etc would have been better alternative.

I concur

Get a good lawyer. Where is the law? Work on the roads in Lagos. Create more roads. Fly overs. BRT are they enough. I remember when I will queue for 3 hours on Lagos Island. Lagos should have a train system or subway system. Lagos is rich enough and should set the pace. 20m ppl on the road? You can imagine. Yes this is a deterrent but LASTMA and Police will make money off the record. Tax free

You need iron hand as a monkey not others who are humans. Do you even have a car? Do you know that some road signs are not even there to show the road is one way? What is the govt doing about it?

I am not against the law but punishments for breaking traffic and environmental laws in poverty ridden country. You cannot expect a rich man and poor man to pay the same fines but they can do the same community services.
if I am lagos state governor, I will not need services of most of lawma workers till sanity return to lagos roads and environment is clean. commit a traffic offence, get arrested and do 3 to 5 days of community services. After 5 days, you pay money for securing your card for those period and administrative fines. lawma staff will enforce the law.

I think it is putting the hart before the horse. Granted that we have a lot of road users that are not disciplined. We also need to ask the government if they have done enough to control these excesses by installing visible road signs, traffic lights, public education, etc. In some areas in Lagos, only traffic officers know which road is one-way and otherwise. When there are visible road signs placed where people can easily see them and people still violate the instruction then government can exercise the rule of law albeit reasonably. I have heard of instances where there are no road signs or the road signs were cleverly hidden away in such a way that it would take a magician to notice there was anything like that on the road, and an innocent road-user committed an offence and was instantly arrested. It was like setting a trap and once the trap went off, you would see LASTMA coming out from their 'holes'. Very ridiculous.

When you give government agents this kind of opportunity in Nigeria, it is like giving a signed open check to an insatiable looter. The zeal with which they carry out this instruction will shock you just because of their personal benefits. very soon some LASTMA officer will commence their 100k contribution per day or month (?). The point is there is always a better way to stem public excesses than the use of force on those that have no voice. I am sure "big men" won't have problems coping because non of them will be arrested...
Re: Lagos Goes Tough On Traffic Offenders, Cars To Be Forfeited (Photos) by gragragra(m): 12:11pm On Jun 14, 2019
Lol... I super support the enforcement.

There will or should be a chance for appeal against forfeiture like paying 30-50% of the evaluated value of the car as fine, 6 months of weekly mental rehabilitation sessions or 3 months community service as a traffic warden, street sweeper, motherless home, old people's home, cleaning public toilets and places... Lmao

That's the only way many of us will start having sense. Welcome development.

delpee:
Well, I still see many vehicles driving one way in many areas. For instance. .Murtala Mohammed Way, Yaba, the Ijesha/Cele Okota link bridge etc

The punishment is too much in my opinion though. What will LASG do with the vehicles? Community service, jail time or heavy fine will be more reasonable.

That's not to say that I support lawlessness. Those who choose to disobey should be ready to face the music.

However there are some one way streets with no sign or signs that are not so visible which are used as trapping points by some unscrupulous officials. This should be addressed too.

Mr governor, there is nothing like forfeiture of car for offense. Why not keep the car in safe keep while the court imposed a high bond. Imagine how much you will generate on safe keep of property everyday on cars you impound.
Get sense!

They should use the iron hands on the herdsmen first. Stupid law. After they impound, they will sell the car 50k to themselves.
