Going by the trend of culpable vices world wide, one is tempted to ask if parents are to blame. These evils, have always been there but the rate of increase is obviously alarming.

Mr. & Mrs. Sunday were blessed with a bouncing baby boy as their very first born. At the early stage, Mark did not display any sign of waywardness. As soon as he got into the senior secondary, he joined one cult. From that point he became a terror to almost everybody that came in contact with him. It was from one trouble to the other.

His father was determined to rid the boy of that rubbish but his mother refused to cooperate with him. She actually felt that he was being too high handed. At a point, Mr. Sunday became handicapped. All he was made to do was bring money anytime there was need to bail him for one offence or another. It was much pain for the man while the woman was busy pampering him and making him believe that his father did not love him. Finally, he learnt the very hard way after denting his image and that of his parents. Though Mark has soft pedalled but he could not let go completely.

Mr. & Mrs. M journeyed the same route as Mr. & Mrs. Sunday above but they were not as lucky. They lost their own son in a most painful and shameful way. What a waste!

In another similar occurrence, Mr. & Mrs. N were enjoying the booty from their son's evil business. Any business where the gain comes from the tears or blood of others is certainly a gruesome one. "Every day is for the thief but one day is for the owner" says an adage. When Edwin's cup was full and overflowing, nemesis caught up with him. He died a painful and shameful death as well. Can things like these be avoided?

The Great Book tells parents to train up a child in the way he should go, so that he will not depart from it when he grows. Training involves correcting, rebuking, flogging and most importantly, by example. Parents that abandon their duties to their children, should bear the greater part of the blame. It is true that children are quick to learn from their peer groups and for that reason, parents should follow up their children to know the kind of friends they keep. If they are not comfortable with such friends, then, they should discharge them in a friendly manner or a harsh one, depending on the response.

The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Parents must endeavour to bring up their children in the fear of God, for there, is life.

Parents can only guide you, it's left for you to make your choices yourself. So if a child decides to be of negative impact on the society, then it is certainly not a parents fault.

Parents do not guide, they train and discipline.
