Okah’s interview with Aljazeera: Security operatives doubt authenticity
From JULIANA TAIWO, Abuja
Friday, October 08, 2010

Nigeria’s security operatives are seriously doubting the authenticity of Tuesday’s celebrated interview with Henry Okah, Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) former leader by Al Jazeera,
In the interview, Okah accused President Goodluck Jonathan of attempts to implicate Northern politicians, over October 1, 2010 bomb blasts that left 12 persons dead.

A top security source disclosed yesterday that investigations within the security services in Nigeria and South Africa revealed that the interview with Okah, may have been faked to deceive the Arab cable news network, maintaining that there was a great deal of doubt about the authenticity of the telephone contact between the media organization and the embattled militant leader.

The security source said last night that their South African counterpart have confirmed that, “at no time did we allow Okah to make such telephone contact.” Said a top security source: “Following suspicion raised about the authenticity of the interview, we contacted South Africa to confirm its validity but were shocked to find out that at no time did such interview take place.

“In fact, our contact wondered why it took us so long to cross check this information because they did not want to interfere since the issues did not concern their government directly, they have been waiting for such security inquiries from their Nigerian counterpart before revealing the veracity of the interview since the content does not concern them directly”, the source said. These findings have further raised questions as to whether the purported interview with MEND members, in crispy military uniforms, 48 hours before the bomb blast, was also true or not.

Already, the Joint Task Force (JTF) on Niger Delta has debunked the veracity of the interview insisting that after an aerial surveillance of the region, there were no militant camps anywhere, as claimed by Al Jazeera. According to the source, “Al Jazeera, it will be recalled had also during the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s health saga also staged a similar interview with the late president’s cousin claiming that the sick man was healthy, playing with his children and climbing 13-story building.”

The Cable News Network (CNN), had a couple of years ago sacked one of its African correspondents, following a similar faked interview purportedly granted by Niger Delta militants. According to the security source, “The psychological warfare that has been waged against the presidency in the past week has been ratcheted up with deliberate falsehood and outright lies being served up in the media.

“We have found that this was contrived and sold to Al Jazeera as a dummy. These all have the discredited military style written all over them, and we are watching the situation very closely”, the source disclosed.

If the aim of these bombers is to distract the presidency, can we then say they've achieved their objective? The whole drama with its attendant claim and counter claim is getting strenuous and boring.
Re: Okah’s Interview With Aljazeera Faked: Security Operatives Doubt Authenticity by Pk001(m): 11:47pm On Oct 07, 2010
I had been silent on this issue due to the sentiments drawn from various factions. But I have this question to ask.

Have we ever seen a suspected terrorist granted interview by a world press before investigations is concluded?

If an  interview is granted to a suspected terrorist in custody , what do expect the terrorist to say? Of course he will try to sell his propaganda to win sentiments all over.

Is just like allowing CNN to interview Mutallab when he was arrested. What he will say will definitely shock the world.
He may even  claim It was even CIA that put the bomb in diaper. This is just exactly what is happening.

If South African Authorities actually allowed Henry Okah to be interviewed, then their security operatives have failed. Because that will surely jeopardize the investigation.  If he is saying truth, it is the duty of the security operatives to interrogate him and determine the genuineness of his claim. They can then decide  to either free him or prosecute before he is granted interview. Thats how it is done.

I really doubt if south African security operatives actually allowed Aljazeera to interview Henry Okah. I think I will go with this latest post

Presidency claims Okah’s Al-Jazeera interview is fake
By Ihuoma Chiedozie, Abuja
Friday, 8 Oct 2010

The Presidency has cast doubts on the authenticity of Tuesday’s interview granted an international satellite network, Al Jazeera, by a former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, Mr. Henry Okah.

The interview, in which Okah claimed that a close aide of President Goodluck Jonathan called him to get MEND to retract an email statement claiming responsibility for the October 1 bomb blasts in Abuja, had been a subject of controversy, particularly relating to the 2011 presidential election.

Okah, who is currently standing trial on terrorism charges in South Africa, claimed in the interview that Jonathan intended to put the blame for the attacks on Northern politicians contending for the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential ticket with him.

But the Presidency on Thursday added another twist to the development, which had since become a political issue.

A highly placed presidential source in the presidency, who did not wish to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter, told journalists on Thursday that there were considerable doubts about the authenticity of the interview.

The source explained that the doubts stemmed from latest findings by intelligence operatives. The source claimed that the voice in the report might not have been Okah’s own, but was faked and sold to the network.

what would you expect from the presidency? They'll claim it's fake just as they are now claiming GEJ did not exonerate MEND. Through out this bombing saga, GEJ and his bunch of clowns have been talking from both sides of their mouth. Why should I quickly jump to the conclusion that the Presidency are being truthful on this issue when GEJ's camp have consistently backtracked from every move they've taken.

We are waiting and watching patiently.

The game plan was childishly played.

When okah said GEJ wanted to blame the north, he made the north look suspicious.

Now, we know the bomb maestro in this country, Al jazeera is unreliable, and can be used.

Soon the general will be invited with his high thief.

Dude read this for a change. Curled from Daily Trust news:

http://www.dailytrust.dailytrust.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4213:bomb-blasts-saga-oghiadomhe-not-detained&catid=2:lead-stories&Itemid=8

The Chief of Staff to the President Mike Ogiadomhe has not been detained or even sacked in connection with the Independence Day twin bomb blasts in Abuja, a Presidency source said yesterday.
The source also described as fake the interview relayed by Al Jazeera Tuesday with the leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) Mr. Henry Okah.

Okah alleged in the interview that a top aide of President Goodluck Jonathan telephoned him in South Africa and asked him to get MEND to retract its claim that it carried out the Independence Day bombing in Abuja so that the President could blame the blasts on some unnamed northerners.

The President’s men immediately denied the claim but the next day rumours began to filter out in Abuja that Ogiadomhe was in fact the top aide of the President who placed the call to Okah, and that he had been detained by the State Security Service. The rumour persisted when the Chief of Staff was said not to be in the office on Wednesday.

In denying the arrest, the source, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, said it was the handiwork of political detractors who are bent on causing disaffection in the system.

“Yesterday it was the arrest of Oghiadomhe, today it is his sack and who knows what they will cook up for tomorrow? It is a sad way of playing politics and we encourage politicians to come out to face pure competition instead of resorting to unholy ways of pulling down political opponents.

“If they think they can be president, they should go out in very civil way and not by slandering and telling outright lies that can give them the Presidency,” the source said.

The source said the motives of these “political jobbers is designed to justify that Jonathan actually directed one of his aides to persuade embattled MEND ex-leader Henry Okah, to implicate northern political leaders, which the president never did.

“The group is also interested in destabilising the polity with a view to discrediting the ability of the President in running the affairs of government. They are not interested in the survival of our hard earned democracy. They are evil and agents of darkness,” the Presidential source added.

On the interview with Al Jazeera, the source said it was faked to deceive Nigerians.

The sources said investigations within the security services in Nigeria and South Africa revealed that the interview with Mr. Okah, may have been faked to deceive the television, Nigerian and South African intelligence services.

The source maintained that since his arrest, Okah has not made any telephone contact with the media organization, as the South Africa security services are said to have confirmed to their Nigerian counterparts that, “at no time did we allow Okah to make such telephone contact.

“Following suspicion raised about the authenticity of the interview, we contacted South Africa to confirm its validity but were shocked to find out that at no time did such interview take place.” On why it took the government so long to cross check the information, the source said it was because the government wanted to be thorough.

The sources added “the South African government has been waiting for such security inquiries from their Nigerian counterpart before revealing the veracity of the interview since the content does not concern them directly.

Daily Trust learnt yesterday, the government had complained to the South African authorities on why Okah was allowed to talk to Al Jazeera while he is in detention.

However, a senior security official told Daily Trust yesterday that under South African law, Okah as a mere suspect, is entitled to his phones and is permitted to make two phone calls each day.

In fact, the security official said, it had been made clear to the Nigerian government that Okah could be released on his next court appearance unless the government presents credible evidence linking him to the blasts. Some rights groups in that country had already started campaigning that Okah’s rights as a suspect must be respected.

Their concern was heightened by the manner of his arrest in which about 20 armed policemen stormed his home to take him into custody. Few days later his house was searched again but that no incriminating evidence was found.

------------------------------------------------

In cultured societies, a suspect remains a suspect until proven guilty. Okah may be released during the next court hearing and I'll bet he'll grant another live interview.

Errr. . .He was denied bail, if he was a suspect he would have been let go.Back to the topic,AlJazeera clearly faked the interview, and daily trust'd editors need to be fired for reporting fake news. They are now in the league of AlJazeera.I just knew something was missing. This is a case of terrorism, not dem say, dem say.I wouldn't hold my breathe on Okah getting out of this, he is in too deep. This is the end of his chapter.I hope SA has death penalty laws so he could feel the pain of death, and so could his family. Now on to what AlJazeera really knows about this saga. The FG should act quickly.

Daily Trust has always been a pathetic paper. They are unashamedly tribalistic and hate anything from the south with a frightening intensity. Did you not take note of their pro-cabal reports during the Yar Adua saga? Half of all their headlines were to the effect; "Jonathan is a liar", "Jonathan is a coward", "Jonathan is stealing from the North" etc.

Yes, you are right but there has also been no confirmation given that the calls were not placed. All we have been offered (check the language used to this point) are reasons why it is likely fake but no definite answers as to whether Okah did make the call or not from the prison or anywhere else. The statement below . . .

The security source said last night that their South African counterpart have confirmed that, “at no time did we allow Okah to make such telephone contact.” Said a top security source: “Following suspicion raised about the authenticity of the interview, we contacted South Africa to confirm its validity but were shocked to find out that at no time did such interview take place.

goes against facts available at this time confirming that south african suspects are allowed phone calls in prison . . . so, I am not certain what YOu will take away from that.
