- There’s reportedly tension in Obokofia, a community in Imo state, following the insistence by herdsmen on remaining in the community’s land

- A community member cried out over the ‘intimidation’ by the herdsmen; asking how a stranger can start threatening to kill people because he was asked to leave a community

- On his part, the special adviser to the state governor on media, Steve Osuji, has appealed for peace

There’s reportedly tension in Obokofia, a community in Ohaji/Egbema local council of Imo state, following the insistence by herdsmen on remaining in the community’s land even after a deadline was given for them to vacate.

According to Vanguard, some herders shot sporadically into the air on Wednesday, July 3 in a bid to scare members of the community and resist the ultimatum.

Legit.ng gathers that the herders have stayed put in the community, despite the intervention of the Ohaji/Egbema Transition Committee chairman, Damian Ezeru, which calmed down the situation.

The situation became even more tense following the failure of a meeting security meeting to hold, as Ezeru was reportedly attending an official meeting with Governor Emeka Ihedioha, alongside his colleagues.

The meeting will now take place on Friday, July 5.

A source reportedly stated: “The herdsmen are still in the community. They have not left. They are prepared for us but we don’t want to fight them.

We want peace in our land. “I want to ask, how can somebody come to your land and you tell him to leave and that person starts threatening to kill you? What sort of intimidation is this?

“We want them to move out of our farmlands. This is very bad. Do they want us to suffer as a result of lack of food to eat? This is too much. We want them to stop. We can’t continue like this.”

When contacted, the special adviser to the state governor on media, Steve Osuji, reportedly appealed for peace.

He said: “On the herders and farmers crisis, we just appeal to people to respect each others’ rights. Don’t invade people’s farms and destroy them.

“We will continue to engage the leadership of Hausa community in the state to advise their people to live peacefully with their host communities.”

Benekruku do you see why no sane Southern state will ever accept ruga and anything likend after it? Fulani criminal herdsmen take and take by force without any recourse to the law. As it stands does it seem to you like the IGP will do anything to restore the land to their rightful owners? There will most likely be some reluctant concession for fear of attacks and it continues! Should that be the case? Have we no constitution anymore? Is this lifestyle by the fulani what the constitution envisages when it guarantees the right to live and work in any part of the country?

In as much as all you said is true, and resolutions have been made and shot down. I dont see the news as a surprise cos the normal trend will definitely continue and conflicts abound.

State Governors are not facing reality. They just like majority of Nairalander's. Take out point but cant add. When their is no change, status quo will continue.

Any conflict arising now is normal.

If people cant afford peace, they should be able to afford war.

How long have they occupied this community?
Re: Tension As Herdsmen Allegedly Occupy Farmlands In Imo Community, Refuse To Leave by freeze001(f): 1:30pm On Jul 05, 2019
And to you the peace is by compulsorily allocating lands to fulanis in places they are not native to? Which Yoruba, Ikwerre, Ijaw or Igbo man did the FG ever allocate land to for his family and business in any state? Is it becasue they all acknowledge the existence of our constitution and reamain largerly peaceful? So the reward for criminal behaviour is to meet demands of criminals? That is to essentially hold the entire country to ransom so if the FG stops planned allocation of land to them they will intensify attacks, killings an other criminal behaviour? And somehow in the dark recesses of your mind you consider it the right and objective response? Who did this to you?

You say state governors are not facing reality, what about the FG that is solely responsible for internal and external security but fails repeatedly to arrest and decisively deal with criminal fulani herders? Just today Zamfara police have released 25 fulani criminals that were held by the state vigilantes due to 'banditry' as it is now called. This is the FG further compromising what little efforts states and communities put in towards ridding their society of criminals. In this case the state governor is forced to hold dialogues with bandits and criminals to negotiate peace because the FG has deliberately enabled them yet you feel their rubbish ultimatum is right and proper? And you wonder why Southern indigenous populations have roundly rejected any settlement scheme?

The main target of these Herdsmen is SE.. It's so obvious.

Instead of the SEasterners to go home and develop/open up their lands, they prefer running away to drag land in other regions leaving their ancestral lands and parents back home defenseless.

SW remains the most formidable region against external threats and we intend to keep it. that way.
