For Naija here some of the canned foods don expire more than six months before they land for here. They just clean out the date and put another date. No be new thing here. We don dey consume expired foods knowingly and unknowingly for long and nothing dey happen.

You are partly right.
But NAFDAC says that what expiry dates mean is that if someone consumes that product after that day and something goes wrong, the maker cannot be held accountable.
Like you said, it doesn't necessarily mean that the product has spoilt.
This is the standard explanation by NAFDAC.

Best Before and Expiry dates are two different things.

Best Before implies it is no longer as fresh or perfect after the specified date. Expiry date means it is no longer fit for use or consumption.

Expiring date is to signify that after so so date the preservative used in storing the products would no longer be effective.

Hmmm, some people sha sabi toy with their lives. Expiry dates means a lot to me cause if you are into importation, you will understand most products in some countries (like India) with less than 3months to expire are prohibited from being exported from their countries. So when it is remaining 3months to expire, it gets to us and then the expiry date somehow changes to a farther one. So imagine when it's already expired, meaning it's well-past the expiry date shown. Abeg, I no follow for this kain experiment.

You are mixing up “Expiry date” with “Best Before date”

I think you might have found one reason why Nigerians die of unexpected kidney failure or some other thing not easily explained by disease...
Expired food/toxins don't kill right away... it takes a steady dose over a long period of time.

Granted many foods are still edible, way past the "best by" or "expiration" date, but food does deteriorate and mutate over time. Why buy expired food, or let food expire in the first place?
