The Senate on Wednesday successfully screened Dr. Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, the Ministerial nominee for Abia State.

Igbere TV reports that Ogah, an Accountant, was the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Abia State 2019 governorship election.

Dr Uche Ogah responded to over 20 questions asked by the Senators before the Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan asked him to take a bow.

Speaking on the Floor of the Senate, Igbere TV reports that Uche Ogah said Nigeria has all it takes to feed the entire world.

President Muhammadu Buhari had submitted a list of 43 ministerial nominees, which was read at the senate plenary on Tuesday.

Ogah, who was the first nominee to be screened, said the country could diversify from oil to agriculture.

“We don’t need to depend on only oil. I believe that if we develop our agricultural sector, we can equally develop, and create jobs for our teeming youths,” he said.

“Take for instance, if you build a farmland where you can house over 150 youths and you provide enabling accommodation for them and you give them all the necessary amenities. I can tell you that these youths will be powerful to turn an entire piece of land to something that will create revenue for the entire country.

“We as a nation can export and feed the entire world. We have a capacity, we have the population, we have all the resources that is required which is the human capital which is the best that is needed. So I believe that if we can do that, we can actually improve in this nation.”

Another dullard about to be made minister by the IQ reducing President.

Someone please tell this man that to be remotely competitive in agriculture, it has to be mechanized. If your farm is not mechanized, it would be cheaper to import.

This is 2019 not 1943.

Only in Nairaland, empty heads call accomplished industrialists dullard... While u are talking about mechanized farming u forget that we have a comparative advantage in a teeming labour force who must be engaged productively to reduce unemployment.
U also forget that growing an economy is a matter of improving
per capita income and not more expenditures as ur machines will have to be imported.
In all ur wisdom u won't imagine that a modern farm settlement or an integrated Agro based industrial city will both provide direct and indirect jobs in the interim and a host of other side industries to stimulate the economic growth we so need?
U want mechanized farming... What has happened to all the tractors our governor's and officials has been buying all these years. .

Don't come online and show off crass ignorance by insulting the sensibilities of learned people. If u must insult a man, better know more than he does

Boss, you seem to have missed the bigger picture.

I think Mr. Ogar may have to go to the Villa and convince Mr president that Agriculture majorly concerns farmlands than it concern cows (Even though both encompasses agriculture).

Our sitting president may be of the view that cow majors above farmlands. If the later is the position of our helms man, then Mr. Ogar may have failed the screening test for not mentioning cows in his statement.

Your post is an example of why Nigeria is not moving forward. You seem at home with mediocrity.

U also forget that growing an economy is a matter of improving per capita income and not more expenditures as ur machines will have to be imported.
You will not improve per capital income by employing people to do manual labour on a farm because the farm will most likely not be efficient which in turn would make what ever is produced more expensive and this would lead to importation/smuggling of cheaper products which will ultimately kill the farm and make the people that were hired unemployed... Back to square one.

Reducing unemployment is why the Nigerian civil service is bloated, inefficient and consuming more than 50% of the budget.
Reducing unemployment is why the Nigerian government keeps building new sub standard universities.

Nobody starts a business to reduce unemployment, rather when a business is started with growth and profitability in mind, unemployment would reduce.

Look at the list of countries in which depend on agriculture and see that they are all poor countries...

Then when you look at the list of high earners from agriculture, you would see that they are highly mechanized.

Nigerian politicians don't have a big picture....Mr Ogar is only saying what the people want to hear.

If mediocrity is harnessing an area I have an obvious advantage in order to build and produce a system that will further impact and solve a major economic and social problem for my country, then I am at home with it.
China has cheap labour... They harness it to produce
India has cheap labour... They use it to produce.
Naija has cheap labour... But they seen to believe here is Dubai. They will rather watch bbnaija, have sex and smoke while waiting for machines to do their work... And of course... It's 2019.

You are still stuck in the 40's and I'm not sure anyone can help you.

You cannot make money from agriculture using manual labour.
If your price is not competitive, your business will close down.

If manual farming was profitable, people will not be leaving their villages to come and ride Okada in Lagos and Port Harcourt..

Why would you be against mechanized farming in this Century because of job creation, will the machines operate them selves? Would you feed the whole world by ploughing with spades? Do you know that conventionally in Safety, as a human you shouldn't carry a load weighing more than 25kg? I wonder if there's any hope for this country.
