The notion that it is the North that is contributing the most to our population explosion is a myth. The ratio of Northerners to Southerners has remained fairly steady in every census conducted in Nigeria (controversial as those census might be). Polygamy is irrelevant to population explosion. Population growth (adjusting for factors like mortality rate and life expectancy, net migration etc) is determined by the fertility rate of women - not the number of wives people have. If fertility rate of Southern women is 5 children per woman, and that of Northerners is 5 children per woman, then the net growth in each region will remain the same. It doesn't matter if Northerners are marrying 4 wives. There is no infinite supply of women for men. There is a roughly 50-50 ratio of women to men, so if some men are marrying 4 wives, 7 wives, 10 wives or whatever, that means many other men won't even have wives. The way people are talking about Northerners and polygamy, you would think there are 20 million men and 100 million women in the North to cater for all the men. The reality is Northern women don't have any more children than Southern women. An Igbo woman is just as likely to have 6 children as an Hausa woman.
