Research
Jellyfish tend to be very efficient when they swim, which means that on a given amount of energy they can go further than many other animals can. As one of the simplest multicellular organisms, jellyfish (medusae) contract cells to generate jet forces. By mathematically analyzing the fluid vortex rings that form as a result of the contraction, Dabiri was able to model the formation of optimal vortex rings.[13][14] Moreover, Dabiri and his colleagues experimentally confirmed that such propulsion becomes "a more efficient means of locomotion as animals grow larger", because the relative impact of viscosity on propulsion decreases with greater size.

To further in situ digital particle image velocimetry measurements of propulsion in aquatic animals, Dabiri and his student K. Katija designed and patented a device which very accurately takes measurements that are computed into the kinetic energy due to swimming. Divers use a laser and optics system that illuminates the flow field. The technique allows for refinement and testing of previous models for vortex formation. The research has "profound implications not only for understanding the evolution and biophysics of locomotion in jellyfish and other aquatic animals, but also for a host of distantly related questions and applications in fluid dynamics, from blood flow in the human heart to the design of wind power generators."

The wind energy industry is scaling to larger and larger blades, which harvest more energy. However, Dabiri believes that problems associated with large turbines—design difficulties, building costs, increasing areal needs (turbines are sometimes erected a mile apart to ensure good wind flow), eyesore complaints and accidental bird/bat fatalities—can be avoided through innovation. His FLOWE center, with 24 close vertical axis turbines, is his step towards more economical harvesting of wind energy. Noting that there is constructive interference in the hydrodynamic wakes of schooling fish, Dabiri suggested that extracting energy from flow vortices could aid more than locomotion. His models of the energy extraction mechanism are applicable to the design and evaluation of unsteady aero- and hydrodynamic energy conversion systems, like wind farms. Design of an array of vertical axis turbines led to about an order of magnitude increase in power output per area. Dabiri partnered with Windspire Energy for use of three of 24 turbines that stand approximately 30 feet tall and 4 feet wide. He started a company, Scalable Wind Solutions, to commercialize the software used to optimally place the wind turbines. This has also led to the U.S. Navy funding development of an underwater craft that propels on these concepts, using up to 30% less energy than formerly.

Reverse engineering is Dabiri's newest research focus. In July 2012, a team composed of Caltech and Harvard students and professors published a paper that outlined a tissue engineering method for building a jellyfish out of rat heart muscle cells and a silicon polymer. On a basic level, the function of a jellyfish - using a muscle to pump a fluid - "is similar to that of a human heart, which makes the animal a good biological system to analyze for use in tissue engineering. The next step this research will take is towards a self-sustaining prototype - one that can gather food and activate muscular contractions internally.

lol, ridiculous, did she invent biosensors? where is that patents commercially used? here in Nigeria, how has her patent helped in improving lives.

it is like saying i owned a patent for a type of phone

Oh, the goal post has shifted from what they invented, to how useful their inventions are?

The question is are we even ready to accept that a Nigerian can come up with anything? Surely, you heard with me when they said that someone came up with a cure for Aids and Asthma. Were we not part of those that just turned up their noses and tuned to the next channel? What about the lady that was geovisualizing minerals for us? Do you even know her name? There're certainly geniuses hiding away and not bothering to reach or exhibit full potential, for fear that they just might not get the kind of reception, that they deserve. Philip Emeguali managed to register in our heads I'm sure, because he did all he did, outside Nigeria.

It's time we began to give priority by really listening to and supporting
our own and stop trying to forcefully fit into the white man's society, that barely acknowledges us.

Nigeria can come out with something but that something i dont know

Nobody Needs a Nigerian Phd Holder that cant even improve his home society

Most Nigerian Phd holders are just Certificate Phd Holders, Research dem no fit do, Certificate oppression is their main occupation
there are nigerians who graduated in nigerian universities and went to further overseas and many of them are excelling.its just that nairaland only focus about the nigerian drug dealers and scammers who go to south africa and malaysia to push drugs and do internet fraud that we tend to think nigerians are not doing well.there are lots of nigerian medical doctors and nurses who are doing very well in uk.

Interestingly, these things are not normal stuff, as you term them, overseas. If you graduate with a first, you're celebrated abroad. If you work in Microsoft, it's actually a big deal...even as a janitor, oh yes. You work in a centre for robotics? Believe me you, you're up there! More white people do odd jobs than you think, when compared to the ones in respectable job roles, but it is certainly not enough to starkly juxtapose our lifestyle with theirs.

This is what upper-class elites do ie. thats how Buhari trained his kids but they still came back to become le creme de la creme over here and not an anonymous over there

Unfortunately Nigeria's middle-class has been steadily destroyed over the past 40 years. those are the ones who emigrate after being short-changed and exploited...graduating + nysc but still struggling, medium-sized business owners being victimised and such

Otherwise most people wouldnt feel like going except for tourism

Besides, western elements have been tampering in Nigerian infrastructures to make our systems fail so that they will be able to poach our resources, both human and otherwise

So you are blaming westerners for the stupidity of Nigerians that keep voting useless leaders (like the bigot Buhari) because of their tribalistic mindset? Nigeria got independence in 1960, you know.

Nigerian PhD holders planning to go must also have some skills.

Only in Nigeria that someone would finish first degree and quickly jumps to master's degree. No job experience or anything.

Immediately they finish master's degree they jump to PhD, still without job skills or experience.

Most people that are in school for masters or PhD in Europe and America, even Canada, have jobs and skills. Because:

1) You only further your education to get masters degree when you have a profession and a skill you want to master. You can master in business administration, psychology, engineering, nursing, and so many other courses. Now, these people have already been doing these jobs for at least one year and above.

2) For one to study PhD the person must have had so many years of experience and skills. That is why in a developed nations the people attending PhDs are mostly teachers aiming to become professors and researchers. Mind you, most of these people are in their late thirties and forties.

3) In my college, there are seven Nigerian PhD holders in their late twenties. Six of them never held a job, but they are spending all their money paying huge international tuitions.

4) You are less likely to get a job as a PhD holder. It's even worse to find a job with masters degree without at least five to seven years work experience.

5) My advice to Nigerians is instead of going to UK or USA to study PhD programs, let them instead go there and study great skills in medical, technology, or engineering. With all your PhD certificates, you will not get a job without great skills. In fact, when you apply for a job and list PhD on your resume, they will be looking for over 12 years experience in supervising or managerial positions, which is expected. If I give you lists of Nigerians in the USA with PhD certificates without Ideal jobs you will throw up.

Finally, you will not blame Nigerians because they were advised wrongly. Nigerian people like to go to school and also brag about their educational backgrounds. Just like some of them fight for Jamb every year to enter college, and not because they have a vision as to what to do after college, but they just want to brag to their neighbors and friends that they are now undergraduates. Soon as some of the ladies graduated, they go Marry and bury their college diplomas without looking for jobs and support their husbands.

P.S. ever wonder why Dangote employees PhD holders as drivers? It's because he knows that a PhD holder without a skill is as good as a BSC holder without any skills. Therefore, he is doing them a favor.

I know a lot of people will not agree with me, but that's the simple truth that no one is telling you.
