i hope before Online Dunce and Piglets start blaming Buhari they should read the part that states FG only retains only 15% of VAT while State retains 85%...

Now common sense would clearly show that States cant pay salaries with the new minimum wage structures and without the VAT many state civil servants would no get paid or loose salaries .... This one of Buhari's gift to the States and its workers

Useless waste of space called unpatriotic Nigerians want to enjoy basic amenities like Ghanians, SouthAfricans, US, UK, they want free roads, free health care, everyone want government job, or blue collar office jobs but when you ask them to pay tax or contributing towards national development they wail like imbecilees,

just like JfK said: Patriotism is not always about what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country

and even if you take this freebies loving fools that wail in their own country to ghana , shoutafrica and countries with infrastructures, they still only want to leave off government benefits or constituite nuisance to the countries looking for free money

...

This is not a matter of how much other countries pay as against what we pay. Accountability is a major concern. The little you claim Nigerians pay compared to other countries, are they accounted for well enough? Someone that is not diligent in handling the little entrusted unto him, do further entrust more unto him?

No doubt we need accountability, but then again since that isnt forth comming except with a bloody revolution to change political class and dump our 1999 constituition, what do we do about our current problem of state not being able to pay new salary structure and minimum wage

Then you increase it to 20 percent.

Let’s increase it to 100%!!

My economics is rusty but a better way to increase VAT is to increase consumer confidence and spending power. If I earn more, I pay more income tax and my consumption increases. Increasing VAT will only stifle spending and won’t have the intended effect of raising revenue!
What comes first? Increase VAT to fund increased minimum wage or increase minimum wage and get the benefit of increase income tax and increase in VAT revenue from more spending.

No, not 5 zeros. Na 100 zeros. Is that one that is paining you? So why can’t nigeria redominate as well? You sound very clueless and uninformed. Even apart from currency, can you compare Ghana to Nigeria? What is life expectancy for both countries? Economic growth? Access to electricity, food, education, etc etc etc stop talking crap! Are ordinary Nigerians richer in real terms? Crap!

9jaRealist:

Nigerians and the exchange rate obsession... cool

All Ghana did was to RE-DOMINATE the Cedi, by chopping off 5 zeros...
Otherwise, that exchange rate would have read 67.15 Nigerian Naira to 10,000 Ghanaian Cedi.

The fact that 10,000 Cedi became 1 Cedi did NOT make ordinary Ghanaians any richer in real terms.

What does your childish ad hominem drivel have to do with the substance of the matter at hand?
The point was that the currency exchange rates does not explain why Ghana has a higher VAT than Nigeria.

Some of you folks seem to have serious personal issues you really need to sort out professionally...
Otherwise, why would someone turn a rational economic discourse into a hate-filled personal tirade? SMH

Folks have to de-couple VAT from the minimum wage issue...
Only a relatively small percentage of the workforce will be significantly affected by the new minimum wage.

On the other hand, greater tax revenues (if not stolen/misused) would lead to greater investment in physical and social infrastructure (the latter including, education, skill development and healthcare) that should ordinarily grow the economy while generating more jobs.
