He can powerfully influence it as Minister of Transport. Besides from the article the problem isn't building the railways, but rehabilitation & maintenance.

Unfortunately SEners have attacked, victimized and rejected the same hardworking Amaechi endlessly to the point that the man doesn't care anymore and has instead been seriously focused on delivering railways in every other part of the country.

I wonder the kind of railways expected from a "lizard" of Ubima.

Stop fighting the truth inside you oga. You started out like a human beign with consience before diverting. The north insulted and malign Goodluck Jonathan yet he gave you 6 federal university. Kaduna Abuja rail was almost completed before he left office.
Ndi Igbo WILL NOT lick any ass to get infrastructure done in their region. Till today he remained the Lizard of Ubima. Our people say only a bastard points to his father's compound with his left hand.
He is busy delivering railways to other parts of the country, neglecting his constituency. I hope years from now when he need to harvest this good will he will not be reminded from where he came. Because it will be monumental tragedy.

The regional leaders must be strategic in their political plans and affiliation..unless they belong to the main stream, they won't have enough voice to influence critical matters at the centre...This is democracy where numbers speak volume on decision making . As long as the leaders keep promoting their personal selfish agenda, the majority will keep suffering..it is bad to see the most industrious sector of the nation not being networked with good rail system

Can government privatise the railway transport in the form of giving franchise to consortiums or private business that can run it; that way we could be more business minded in running the railway rather than the current politised approach.

NASS would have to amend NRC act first. Here's a link for 2016 on topic.

Is the 2nd Niger bridge not being built? Roads in the east aren't being worked on? Nobody said the region is or should be completely ignored. The point is you cannot dictate to the government which projects to implement when you lack the political goodwill to do so thanks to your endless attacks.

As for grandstanding as a strategy to attract infrastructure, good luck wink.

Read and understand before typing! Even the article clearly tells you that prior to Buhari's regime, this neglected rail line was NRC's most lucrative line. It didn't say among, it was clear and unambiguous figures yet all of a sudden, the trains stopped working and the lines started being vandalized. See let me tell you, a smart human being in the helm of affairs will make sure that this line remains operational at all times wether he likes the people of the area or not so as to ensure this revenue leak is blocked. But no, our people dnt think smartly afterall govt money no dey finish, if e finish they borrow more. So long as they have cheerleaders like u

Was Donald Trump being petty and emotional when he decided on building the wall against the will of democrats who opposed and constantly attack him?

When he refused to implement tighter gun control against the will of democrats and in favor of his beloved NRA that heavily supported his election and administration?

You see, politics is all about competing interests. It's a actually an ignorant, petty and emotional mind that thinks it's all about "internet jokes".

transportation business in naija is controlled by the easterner ....what happened to enugu airport ..when govt want turn to international airport..they fight with their last pint of blood to stop it because they are the importer.check this fact...they buy it ....land in lagos from seaport or airport, must be taken to their warehouse in the east by transport and you who want to buy must go to the east to buy before transporting it back to lagos or other place to sell....that is the deal

lol for a country that is gradually going broke and through your own words looking for competing needs common sense would have dictated to you that projects that command lucrative returns as this rail line which is written in the article would command higher priority but well this is Nigeria where emotion trumps logic and common sense...also the reason why the country is in the state it is in

Also for your info nc(markudi and jos) and north east(maidugiri) are on this same rail line..I am sure too they are being punished too abi

Even then, he was appointed as Minister of Railways for the whole country, not just the North and the SOuth West.

Plus as the report says, the potential revenue from making the line run could be very very high

Plus, let's be frank, we really need to fix rails across the country. One reason our roads are getting bad is because of overuse.

One idiot is saying that easterners have attacked Amaechi, who is supposed to fix the railway.

And I wonder why a sensible person will use what happens on Nairaland for decision making.

As far as I am concerned, Nairaland is the worst forum I have ever seen in this world.

Go to Reddit, Quora, Word reference, etc. and you will be amazed at how much you can learn from the members.

On Nairaland, what holds sway is hate, bigotry and tribalism. The most surprising part is that the owner keeps quiet while things escalate.

Nairaland is not that bad...

Try 4 chan. It makes Nairaland look lilywhite by comparison...

On a more serious note, Reddit and Quora look good because they originate in the USA where there are standards as to what constitutes poorly thought out speech, and where site moderation is a full time job. (Most Nairaland mods are part time)

Did anyone tell you the other rail lines aren't lucrative as well? Do you know the level of trade and commerce between Lagos and Kano? Do you have the figures to reach such an assumption? For instance, I know for a fact that the Kaduna - Abuja daily rail service makes over N2m per trip, and it's always overbooked even with inflated prices (even after they had to officially raise prices due to demand).

I would ordinarily like development projects implemented across the country because the truth is we are all beneficiaries (I've used the Onitsha Niger bridge myself more than once), but I'm simply restating the political reality that goodwill & diplomacy are needed if you want to be made a priority among competing interests.

The eastern rail corridor connects Port Harcourt in the Niger Delta – passing through Aba, Umuahia, Uzuakoli, Enugu, Makurdi before terminating at Maiduguri in the north-eastern Borno State.

Your Trump wall example is apples and oranges. The ICRC concession was already approved by the same FG in 2017. The competing interest arguement is still dumb because the project covers all the regions in the country. Lol it's simply logical and pragmatic to carry out the project.

Read carefully this time look at all the states listed.

One of the reasons Trump was voted in was because he promised raising that wall to checkmate the illegal migrants and yes NRA is a very powerful organisation that even a democrat will approach tactfully but i am at loss how these relates to making a decision that you stand to gain a lot from. Except you are telling me that if tomorrow yorubas oppose buhari's regime, he will shutdown MMIA for years or maybe shutdown the ports under a phony reason

Olusoji Osidipe, the eastern wing district manager of NRC office in Enugu, confirmed to our correspondent hat the railway has not operated in the zone for the past five years. He said it was as a result of vandalization of the rail lines at certain portions by unknown individuals.

THE BOLDED IS THE PROBLEM WITH THE RAILWAY TRACK IN THE EASTERN REGION.

The reason for the deficit is because of inefficiency due to running costs and not because the route lacks passengers or is not lucrative. The main culprit is diesel cost for generators according to your article, which is national challenge no matter where the rails are located until we fix the power problem. Even at that they're still making so much money that the management is optimistic of breaking even soon (if they haven't already done so since that report considering their revenue growth rate).

Can you say a service whose revenue increased X5 within one year isn't lucrative? Absolutely not.
