Social media falsehood definitely will lead us the way of Rwandan history if not properly checked. Senator Musa has done a great job bringing this bill and i commend the floor of the senate for making the bill scale it's second reading. Nigeria ain't the first country to pass such bill into law |

Nigerians let's be joyous and commend senator Moh'd Sani Musa for this bill. The bill doesn't seem to be harsh when compared to that of the hate speech bill which had sorted for death penalty by hanging. Rather this anti social media falsehood bill say a maximum of N300,000 for individuals and N10,000,000 for cooperate organizations or even a jail term of 3yrs. I support the bill because of the sanity it will bring into the social media space of Nigeria |

The falsehood of social media in the polity of our country cannot be over emphasized. Nigeria is gradually turning into a divided state because of the falsehood of information been spread across all platforms of social media. This bill will curtail the content of information been sent across media handles else you face jail term or pay fines just as the court may deem fit. |

NuraSambo: He supported the bill and we wonder when sanity will return to Nigeria, they have shown us time without number that they don't care about the ordinary man. Even Sen. Elisha Abbo who was caught on tape assaulting a staff at a store imagine oh, a serving senator but what do you expect when we have such people making our laws? |

maestroferddi: This social media bill would eventually lead to a duplicity of our legislation, if we already have a Cyber Crimes Act that covers social media related offences like Sen. Nnamani pointed out, that would be a good place to start. Our Democracy should be top priority to our leaders. |

SalamRushdie: We always leave issues important to the populace to chase things that won't better the life of the ordinary Nigerian. This is the 3rd time in 5years this social media bill is being resurrected. The Cyber Crimes Act Sen. Nnamani pointed out covers similar issues why ignore it? 1 Like |

sombrady: We need to support Sen. Nnamani in protecting our democracy at all costs. The social media bill has passed it's second reading at the Senate while the bill to temporarily ban generator importation didn't see the light of day. Look at our priority in Nigeria. |

This buhari intends to clip the media power of the southwest in particular and Nigeria in general. People like me weren't surprised that buhari is behaving like this but psychophants told us that he is a reformed dictator. Thank God sowore is reaping his reward |

Stoberm12: Simple. Nothing to create a storm about. It is targeted mainly at those who have become experts at using lies and falsehood to make money (blogging et al) and those pushing an agenda (eg deliberately discredit an electoral candidate so another candidate can benefit with the likes of Omokri, FFK masters of this) or those who attack the character of their enemies with lies. If you are not given to doing any of those then nothing to worry about. |

Judeakpan126: Most would too if they learn what the bill seeks to do rather than continue to oppose it ignorantly. Most users of social media won't fall foul of it. Whether we like it or not, a malevolent underbelly has arisen that uses social media in a deliberately cynical manner to gain personal profit. These are the people who must be stopped. It is like organised crime or terrorism that man has always historically felt he must rise against and stop by all means. When things that are bad become organised by hardened characters who want to profit from deliberate wrongdoing, the law and constituted authority must be up and doing to stop them. This is now the case with social media. There are now even organised groups headed by the likes of Omokri who cannot allow us have issue-based elections anymore because they want to sway votes away from one candidate with scaremongering lies. Lies such as "Mr.X has two months to live and should not be voted for" have become the staple diet reading on social media when 30 years ago it would likely be "Mr.X did this while he was head of this organisation and failed so therefore he cannot manage Nigeria" or "can Mr.B tell us what he will do about our unfeasibly large recurrent budgeted expenditure killing Nigeria's development", Etc,etc, etc. If the bolded had been pushed vigorously then Abba Moro may not be a senator today given his disastrous role as Minister under GEJ that led to the death of many young Nigerians. Instead of social media to expose that sort of thing that will save lives and future of many, it is sensational news and lies some now focus on. Moro then goes on to become senator unimpeded because people don't want to discuss his administrative incompetence yet they would be all ears if you mention that he impregnated Tonto Dikeh and beats her. This trend has to change otherwise the future looks bleak as more and more charlatan learn to exploit man's love of sensational and fake news.. Nigerians will make better judgement about their future without lies about who has been cloned, is about to die, is marrying his daughter's friend, is homosexual , likes to patronise strip joints or such nonsense. In short, social media has become about sensationalism, attention-seeking and lies. Important to reverse this trend. With the passage of this bill into law, scoundrels won't put their name to overt lies again as they know a social media libel sanction awaits them. |
Re: Social Media Bill Scales Second Reading In Senate by Nobody: 9:35am On Nov 23, 2019 |
engrchykae: So, because your own mindset predisposes you to focusing on individuals only, you think Buhari , head of the executive arm, called Senators , members of the separate legislative arm, and ordered them to do this? Do you not think many Nigerians may have lobbied their senators about the proliferation of fake news on social media that is now a threat to the integrity and moral fibre of society? If you put your name to a lie then why should social media protect you? After all you cannot get away with libel using printed media like newspapers so why should social media continue in the dark ages? |
Re: Social Media Bill Scales Second Reading In Senate by Nobody: 9:40am On Nov 23, 2019 |
Judeakpan126: 100% correct. The trend must be reversed before very serious damage is done. I don't know why some are worried if they do not go online to peddle lies deliberately and push an agenda. At the very least, this law will compel some to think of what they say online. |
Re: Social Media Bill Scales Second Reading In Senate by engrchykae(m): 6:34pm On Nov 25, 2019 |
candidtalk:anyway there should be a check on the media but not death sentence. It should be really defined so that a line be drawn between constructive criticism and libel |
